Chapter 11 - The Bargain

Grant chose a public place for their meeting.
That told Claire he was afraid.
Not afraid enough to surrender.
Just afraid enough to avoid a private room.
He sat in the lobby bar of the Jefferson Hotel with a glass of sparkling water.
Mara remained two tables away.
Detective Ortiz knew Claire was there.
Claire had no intention of improvising justice.
Grant smiled when she approached.
“Still wearing the wedding ring?”
Claire looked down.
She had forgotten it was there.
“That’s none of your business.”
“Everything becomes my business eventually.”
She sat.
“What do you want?”
Grant placed a small encrypted drive on the table.
“This contains the complete transfer history.”
“Then give it to the police.”
“They lack imagination.”
“What do you want?”
“Your original phone.”
Claire laughed.
“No.”
“And a statement that the recording played at Robert’s birthday was edited.”
“It wasn’t.”
“I didn’t ask whether it was.”
Claire leaned back.
“You’re scared of that recording.”
“Not legally.”
“Socially?”
He smiled.
“Reputation is just another balance sheet.”
“What’s on the drive?”
“Proof Diane initiated the theft.”
“We already have proof.”
“Proof Mason knew more than he admits.”
Claire’s chest tightened.
Grant noticed.
“There she is.”
“Who?”
“The wife who still wants him to be less guilty.”
Claire said nothing.
Grant leaned forward.
“Mason knew his mother wanted to accumulate shares.”
“He says he didn’t know stolen money funded it.”
“Perhaps.”
“You’re trying to turn me against him.”
“I don’t have to.”
Claire looked at the drive.
“What else?”
“Robert’s old side agreements. Diane’s equity claim. Payments to family members. A few things prosecutors would enjoy.”
“And you?”
“I’m merely the accountant.”
“You created Cedar Quay.”
“No.”
“You copied my signature.”
“No.”
“You were sleeping with Diane.”
Grant’s face stayed smooth.
“That part is true.”
“How long?”
“Seven years.”
Claire stared.
Seven years.
Almost the length of Claire’s marriage.
“Did Robert know?”
“No.”
“Did Mason?”
A pause.
Claire caught it.
“When?”
Grant smiled.
“Ask your husband.”
Claire felt sick.
Grant continued.
“Diane wanted revenge. Mason wanted power. Robert wanted control. You wanted to prove you were smarter than all of them.”
“And you?”
“I wanted freedom.”
“With fourteen million dollars.”
“Money makes freedom portable.”
Claire looked at him.
“What happened to Diane’s share?”
Grant’s eyes narrowed.
“She made poor decisions.”
“You stole from her too.”
“I protected assets from someone behaving irrationally.”
It sounded exactly like the language everyone in this family used when taking something from someone else.
Claire realized Grant had never loved Diane.
He had simply learned how to speak her grievance back to her.
“You told her Robert owed her.”
“He did.”
“You told Mason Robert would never make him CEO.”
“He probably wouldn’t.”
“You told Robert you were his loyal friend.”
“I was useful to him.”
“And you told yourself none of this made you the villain because everyone else had already done something wrong.”
Grant’s smile vanished.
For the first time, she had reached him.
Claire stood.
“You can keep your drive.”
His confidence returned.
“You’ll regret that.”
“Maybe.”
As she turned, he said, “Mason knew about the affair.”
Claire stopped.
Grant’s voice softened.
“He saw me leaving Diane’s hotel suite nine months ago.”
Claire looked back.
“He confronted her.”
“And?”
“She told him if he exposed us, she would tell Robert about the unauthorized transfer he had already approved.”
Claire stared.
“That was five months ago.”
Grant smiled.
“Check your timeline.”
Claire felt the truth click into place.
Mason had known about the affair before he signed the transfer.
He had not simply stumbled into Diane’s scheme.
He had already known she and Grant were hiding something.
And signed anyway.
Claire left without taking the drive.
Outside, Mason was waiting.
Mara had called him.
Claire walked toward him.
“You knew.”
His face told her everything.
“You knew about Diane and Grant.”
Mason closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Nine months ago.”
“And five months ago, you still signed documents Grant brought through her.”
“Yes.”
Claire’s throat tightened.
“Why?”
“Mom said she would end it.”
“That makes no sense.”
“I know.”
“She was having an affair with the CFO, and your response was to give them financial authority?”
“I thought if I forced her to choose—”
“Choose what?”
“The family.”
Claire laughed in disbelief.
“You thought you could control her with silence.”
Mason looked devastated.
“Yes.”
“You were blackmailing your own mother.”
“No.”
“You knew a secret and used it to get a promise.”
His face collapsed.
“Yes.”
Claire removed her wedding ring.
Mason watched.
She placed it in his palm.
“I kept waiting for the lie that would be smaller than the last one.”
“Claire—”
“There isn’t one.”
He closed his fingers around the ring.
“I love you.”
She believed him.
That was the tragedy.
“I know.”
Tears ran down his face.
Claire stepped away.
“Love did not make you honest.”
That night, Robert’s attorneys sought an emergency court order to block the sale of Hale Meridian’s largest logistics property, Riverside Park.
Grant had announced the sale that afternoon.
Buyer:
Blackridge Partners.
One of the shell entities financed with stolen money.
The transaction would move a property valued near forty million dollars out of Hale Meridian for twenty-six million, supposedly to satisfy debt.
If it closed, Grant’s network would own one of the company’s most valuable assets.
Robert’s lawyers argued self-dealing.
Grant’s lawyers argued emergency liquidity.
At 5:30 the next afternoon, the judge refused to halt the transaction without stronger authenticated evidence connecting Grant personally to Blackridge.
The sale was scheduled for Friday morning.
Claire left the courthouse feeling as though they had lost everything.
Then Mara’s investigator called.
“We found the original formation agent for Blackridge.”
Claire stopped.
“Can he identify Grant?”
“Better.”
“What?”
“He kept a recorded onboarding call.”
Claire’s heart jumped.
“But there’s a problem.”
“Of course there is.”
“The client wasn’t Grant.”
Claire looked at Mara.
“Who was it?”
May you like
The investigator answered.
“Diane Hale.”
