Chapter 10 - The Bank Box

The brass key did not open only the cabinets.

A tiny number had been stamped along its edge.

214.

Marco recognized it.

“Lake Federal.”

The local bank had once operated a private safe-deposit vault for wealthy estate owners.

Robert Mercer had used it.

Lake Federal had since merged with Northeast Commonwealth Bank, but the original boxes remained in the basement branch.

Box 214 was still active.

Registered to the Robert Mercer Family Archive Trust.

Successor access required two authorized parties.

Daniel.

And Marco.

Daniel stared at the signature card.

“My father named you?”

Marco appeared equally shocked.

The bank manager nodded.

“Mr. Robert Mercer added Mr. Alvarez nineteen months before his death.”

That was shortly after Anna’s diagnosis.

Eleanor was not listed.

The physical brass key, combined with identification and trust documentation, opened the box.

Inside sat a red leather ledger, two flash drives and a sealed letter.

Daniel recognized Anna’s handwriting immediately.

FOR DANIEL, IF ROBERT CANNOT FINISH THIS.

His hands shook opening it.

Daniel,

If you are reading this, then either I lost my fight with cancer before I could prove everything, or Robert decided the danger was greater than the benefit of telling you.

I hope he chose differently.

Your greatest weakness is not your temper.

It is loyalty without examination.

You believe trusting people proves you love them.

Sometimes asking questions is the more loving act.

Daniel stopped.

He had to breathe before continuing.

Blue Heron began before Evan joined Mercer Heritage, but he expanded it. Eleanor controls the original network. I believe she diverted money from the company because Robert planned to reduce her inheritance after discovering unauthorized transfers.

I also believe she intends to force a sale after Robert’s death.

The company shares in Caleb’s trust are the obstacle.

If you remain trust protector, she cannot control those votes.

Daniel looked at Rebecca.

Anna had understood the structure years before Eleanor acted.

He continued.

If Eleanor ever tries to make you look reckless, unstable or violent, do not give her the reaction she wants.

Daniel lowered the letter.

Marco looked down.

Daniel whispered, “I gave her exactly what she wanted.”

Rebecca said, “Keep reading.”

Anna’s final paragraphs were worse.

Harbor Point was a trap.

The original $800,000 payment went to a shell consultant Eleanor controlled. She told you it was a settlement because she knew you would sign under pressure.

That signature became the template for later authorizations.

You are responsible for signing something you did not understand.

But you are not responsible for what she did with that trust.

Tell the truth even if it costs you the company.

Protect Caleb from learning the wrong lesson from us.

Daniel folded the letter against his chest.

For three years, he had mourned Anna.

Now he had to mourn all the moments when she tried to speak and he failed to listen.

The red ledger contained dates, vendor names and transfer amounts.

Robert had added notes in black ink.

Anna’s entries were blue.

The final entries were Robert’s.

ELEANOR CONFRONTED 6/14.

DENIED.

THREATENED D.

E.C. CONTACTED EVAN 6/19.

STERLING DISCUSSIONS BEGAN WITHOUT BOARD AUTHORITY.

The flash drives held scanned bank statements and three recordings.

In the first, Robert confronted Eleanor.

Her voice was unmistakable.

“You think Daniel can run this company without me?”

Robert answered, “Better than he can survive what you’ve done.”

Eleanor laughed.

“He signed Harbor Point.”

“You deceived him.”

“A prosecutor may not care.”

The second recording involved Evan.

Robert said, “You are sleeping with my daughter while stealing from my company.”

Evan replied, “I’m building value you were too sentimental to see.”

Olivia covered her mouth.

Rebecca paused the recording.

“You don’t have to hear this.”

“Yes,” Olivia whispered. “I do.”

The third recording was dated six weeks before Robert’s death.

Eleanor spoke quietly.

“If Daniel loses control, I become successor protector.”

Robert said, “Not if I amend the trust.”

“Then amend it.”

“I will.”

“And tell me, Robert—how much scandal can the company survive? Your son under federal investigation? Olivia’s debts published? Anna’s accusations turned into an affair with the groundskeeper?”

Marco’s eyes widened.

Daniel’s face hardened.

She had planned to smear Anna and Marco even while Anna was dying.

Robert answered, “You would destroy your own family.”

Eleanor said, “No. I would keep it.”

The recording ended.

Daniel looked at the safe-deposit box.

There should have been another document.

Robert’s amendment.

Rebecca searched the file.

Nothing.

“If he amended the trust,” Daniel said, “where is it?”

The bank manager checked the inventory sheet.

“One sealed legal packet was removed from this box eighteen months ago.”

Daniel’s pulse quickened.

“By whom?”

The manager looked at the access log.

“Robert Mercer.”

Daniel stared.

May you like

“That’s impossible.”

Robert had been dead for two years.
