Chapter 20 - The Net

One year after the canceled wedding, Hawthorne Lake Estate looked different.

Not physically.

The same white house stood above the water.

The same roses climbed the terrace.

The same boathouse cast a long shadow across the pier.

But the estate no longer felt like Eleanor’s kingdom.

Mercer Heritage had converted part of the property into a nonprofit training center for hospitality workers and scholarship students.

Marco had been offered the position of estate operations director.

He accepted only after negotiating his own salary.

Daniel had laughed.

“You don’t trust me?”

Marco answered, “I trust contracts.”

Anna would have approved.

On a cool September morning, Caleb walked down to the pier.

He was nine now.

Taller.

Still thin.

He carried the small fishing rod from that afternoon.

Daniel walked several steps behind him.

Marco waited near the boathouse.

Nobody rushed Caleb.

Nobody told him where to stand.

He reached the dock chair.

It had been replaced.

Caleb stared at the water.

Daniel stopped ten feet away.

“You okay?”

Caleb nodded.

Then shook his head.

“Both.”

Daniel understood.

Caleb sat.

For several minutes, he did nothing.

Then he cast.

The lure landed badly, barely six feet from the pier.

Marco smiled.

“Terrible.”

Caleb laughed.

“Shut up.”

Daniel laughed too.

It was the first time laughter had sounded natural beside that lake in a year.

They fished for an hour.

Caught nothing.

Caleb grew impatient.

“I thought fish were supposed to be stupid.”

Marco said, “That’s what fish want you to think.”

Then Caleb’s line jerked.

His eyes widened.

“Dad!”

“Keep the rod up.”

“I am!”

“No, you’re trying to pull it to Boston.”

Marco moved beside him.

“Easy. Let it run.”

Caleb fought the fish carefully.

The silver shape appeared near the surface.

“A bass!” he shouted.

Daniel reached automatically toward the equipment rack.

His hand stopped.

The landing net hung there.

Not the same one.

That remained in an evidence warehouse until its legal disposal.

This was new.

Floating rim.

No weights.

Daniel looked at Caleb.

Caleb saw the net.

His excitement vanished.

For several seconds, the line tightened while nobody moved.

Marco reached for it.

“I can land him by hand.”

Caleb whispered, “No.”

Marco stopped.

Caleb swallowed.

“I want the net.”

Daniel felt tears sting his eyes.

He did not make it a symbolic moment.

He did not tell Caleb how brave he was.

He simply lifted the net and handed it to him.

Caleb’s hands trembled.

Marco guided him.

“Under the fish. Don’t chase it.”

Caleb lowered the rim into the water.

The bass slid above it.

Then Caleb lifted.

The fish landed safely on the dock.

He stared at it.

A year earlier, a net had trapped him underwater.

Now he held one carefully in both hands.

“Can we put him back?”

Marco smiled.

“Absolutely.”

Caleb crouched and lowered the net until the fish swam free.

He watched it disappear beneath the dark water.

Daniel sat beside him.

Caleb asked, “Did Grandma ever say she was sorry?”

Daniel had visited Eleanor once in federal prison.

She had asked about the company.

Asked whether Sterling had renewed interest.

Asked whether Olivia had sold shares.

Asked whether Daniel planned to return as CEO.

She had asked about Caleb last.

“How is he?”

Daniel had answered, “Healing.”

Eleanor had stared at him.

“I never meant for things to go that far.”

Daniel said, “That isn’t an apology.”

She never gave one.

Now he looked at his son.

“No.”

Caleb absorbed that.

“Do you wish she did?”

“Yes.”

“Would it fix it?”

“No.”

Caleb nodded.

That answer seemed enough.

Behind them, the small security camera still watched the pier.

Daniel had considered removing it.

Caleb had asked him not to.

At first Daniel thought his son wanted protection.

Then Caleb explained.

“The camera didn’t hurt me.”

Daniel had never forgotten that.

The camera had not betrayed them.

It had shown what people tried to hide.

A grandmother’s cruelty.

A father’s mistake.

A groundskeeper’s courage.

May you like

A conspiracy.

A truth.
