Chapter 12 - The Box That Was Already Empty

First National opened the safe-deposit vault at 10:03 the next morning.

Rachel went with Margaret and Claire.

The branch manager, Pamela Shaw, carried a folder thick with records.

“I want to begin by saying we’re taking this seriously.”

Claire replied, “You should.”

Pamela looked nervous.

“The box was accessed on June eighteenth.”

“By whom?” Rachel asked.

“Our log lists Rachel Mercer.”

Rachel stared.

“I was in Chicago.”

Pamela nodded.

“We confirmed that from the travel documentation your counsel sent.”

“Then how did someone get in?”

“A notarized authorization.”

She placed a copy on the desk.

Rachel read it.

I, Rachel Mercer, authorize my husband, Daniel Mercer, to access safe-deposit box 4419…

Rachel’s signature appeared at the bottom.

Margaret whispered, “That isn’t hers.”

Pamela continued.

“The document was notarized.”

Claire leaned forward.

“By whom?”

Pamela turned the page.

The seal read:

VANESSA KANE

NOTARY PUBLIC

Rachel went still.

Margaret covered her mouth.

Claire looked at Rachel.

“Did you sign anything in front of Vanessa?”

“No.”

“Ever?”

“No.”

Pamela said, “The employee who admitted Mr. Mercer followed procedure based on the identification and authorization presented.”

Claire’s eyes hardened.

“Your procedure allows a spouse to enter a box owned by two other people based on a questionable photocopied authorization?”

Pamela stiffened.

“We’re reviewing that.”

“What was removed?” Rachel asked.

“We don’t inventory contents.”

Margaret whispered, “Everything.”

Rachel looked at her.

“What was inside?”

“A sealed envelope from Samuel.”

“What else?”

“Copies of partnership agreements.”

“The ledger?”

“I don’t know.”

Rachel slapped the desk with both palms.

Pamela jumped.

Rachel immediately stepped back.

“I’m sorry.”

Her hands were shaking.

Margaret touched her arm.

Rachel moved away.

No violence.

No touch.

Not now.

Claire asked, “Do you have surveillance?”

Pamela nodded.

“We retain ninety days.”

“June eighteenth is within that.”

“Yes.”

“Preserve it.”

“We already have.”

An hour later, they watched the footage.

Daniel entered the branch at 2:14 p.m.

He carried a slim leather briefcase.

At 2:27, he entered the vault.

At 2:41, he emerged carrying the same briefcase.

But it was visibly thicker.

Rachel stared at the screen.

Margaret began crying.

“My husband’s last letter.”

Rachel didn’t look at her.

Claire asked Pamela to preserve everything.

Outside, Margaret sat on a bench.

Rachel remained standing.

“I should have told you about the box.”

“Yes.”

“I thought the authorization was something you had signed.”

“You didn’t call me?”

“I was ashamed.”

“Of what?”

“Of not knowing what Samuel left.”

Rachel laughed bitterly.

“You were ashamed, so you let me stay ignorant.”

Margaret looked down.

“I can’t defend it.”

“No.”

“I won’t.”

Rachel’s anger faded into exhaustion.

Her phone rang.

Vanessa.

Rachel stared at the name.

Claire said, “Answer.”

Rachel did.

Vanessa sounded terrified.

“Where are you?”

“Why?”

“Adrian knows I met you.”

Rachel looked at Claire.

“How?”

“I don’t know.”

“Maybe because he watches you.”

“Rachel, listen to me.”

“I’m listening.”

“I need to give you something.”

“What?”

“A phone.”

“What phone?”

“Not mine.”

Rachel’s pulse quickened.

“Whose?”

“Adrian’s backup.”

Claire leaned closer.

Vanessa continued.

“He keeps an old phone for messages he doesn’t want on his corporate device.”

“You stole it?”

“I borrowed it.”

“That’s stealing.”

“I know.”

Rachel almost smiled despite herself.

“Where are you?”

“Parking garage under the Bellwether club.”

“That’s where Daniel grabbed you.”

Silence.

“How do you know that?”

“Later.”

“I can’t stay.”

“Give it to security.”

“No. Adrian owns security right now.”

“Luis doesn’t work there anymore.”

“That’s why.”

Rachel said, “Stay in your car.”

She and Claire drove back.

Vanessa was waiting on level B2.

She stepped from her SUV holding a black phone.

Her hands were shaking.

“I only know one passcode.”

“What?”

“Noah’s birthday.”

Rachel took it.

Vanessa didn’t release it.

“If this gets used, Adrian will know I gave it to you.”

“You can go to the police.”

Vanessa laughed.

“And tell them what? That I helped my husband intimidate residents, forged a notarization, and provided access to your home?”

Rachel stared.

“So you admit the notarization.”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

Margaret inhaled sharply behind them.

Vanessa opened her eyes.

“I didn’t sign your name. Daniel brought me the paper already signed.”

“It wasn’t signed by me.”

“I know that now.”

“You knew then.”

Vanessa looked ashamed.

“Yes.”

Rachel took the phone.

Vanessa whispered, “There are messages with Daniel.”

“How many?”

“Hundreds.”

Rachel’s stomach tightened.

“And Ellis?”

“Yes.”

“Did Adrian tell Ellis to enter my house?”

“I think so.”

“What did he take?”

“I don’t know.”

Margaret asked, “Is Samuel’s ledger on that phone?”

Vanessa looked at her.

“No.”

Then she hesitated.

“But there’s a photograph of it.”

Rachel unlocked the phone.

Vanessa guided her to a hidden messaging app.

One thread was named D.M.

Daniel Mercer.

Rachel opened it.

The most recent message was from Adrian.

RACHEL IS NOT GOING TO SIGN. MOVE TO PHASE TWO.

Daniel’s response:

CUSTODY PRESSURE MAY WORK. GIVE ME UNTIL MONDAY.

Rachel felt the concrete garage floor disappear beneath her feet.

Vanessa whispered, “I’m sorry.”

Rachel looked at her.

“No.”

Her voice shook.

“You’re not sorry yet.”

She scrolled further.

Another message.

From Daniel.

IF SHE FINDS THE ORIGINAL MEMORANDUM, THE DEAL IS DEAD.

May you like

Adrian replied:

THEN MAKE SURE SHE NEVER FINDS IT.
