Chapter 16 - The Mother on the Witness Stand

Margaret took the stand six days later.

The courtroom was crowded with Bellwether residents.

Adrian had made sure of that.

He wanted them to see Margaret Ellison exposed.

His attorney began gently.

“Mrs. Ellison, you were an attorney in 2001?”

“Yes.”

“You notarized documents connected to Bellwether Estates?”

“Yes.”

“Did you alter the date on one of those documents?”

“Yes.”

Murmurs filled the gallery.

Rachel watched her mother’s shoulders stiffen.

The attorney continued.

“Intentionally?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know that was improper?”

“Yes.”

“Potentially unlawful?”

“Yes.”

“Yet you did it.”

“Yes.”

Adrian sat behind counsel.

He looked almost relaxed.

Rachel’s stomach tightened.

The attorney displayed the affidavit.

“And now your daughter asks this court to enforce rights that depend partly on a title history you manipulated.”

Margaret looked toward Rachel.

Then back.

“My daughter didn’t manipulate anything.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

“No.”

“Did you?”

“Yes.”

“Why should this court trust documents you touched?”

Claire objected.

“Sustained.”

But the damage was done.

Residents stared at Margaret.

Rachel saw shame spreading across her mother’s face.

Then Claire stood for cross-examination.

“Mrs. Ellison, did you create the 1998 corridor covenant?”

“No.”

“Did you alter it?”

“No.”

“Did you notarize it?”

“No.”

“Was it recorded before the document you altered?”

“Yes.”

“How many years before?”

“Three.”

“Did your later misconduct erase it?”

Adrian’s attorney objected.

The judge allowed Claire to rephrase.

“Did you ever sign any release of that covenant?”

“No.”

“Did Samuel Ellison?”

“No.”

“Did Rachel Mercer?”

“Not in my presence.”

“Did you see Rachel sign the owner consent Kane Urban relies on?”

“No.”

“Do you believe she did?”

Adrian’s lawyer objected.

Sustained.

Claire approached.

“Why are you admitting this publicly?”

Margaret looked at Rachel.

“Because hiding one wrong helped create twenty-five years of others.”

The courtroom fell quiet.

Margaret continued.

“I told myself I was protecting my family.”

Rachel’s eyes filled.

“I was protecting myself from losing the version of my family I wanted.”

Adrian’s face hardened.

Claire sat.

The judge took the matter under advisement.

Outside, reporters waited.

Rachel had not expected reporters.

Adrian had.

One shouted, “Mrs. Ellison, did you forge documents for Bellwether developers?”

Margaret stopped.

Rachel grabbed her arm.

“Keep walking.”

Margaret whispered, “No.”

She turned.

“I altered one date on one affidavit in 2001. I regret it. I have provided the original records to counsel and investigators.”

Rachel stared.

Margaret continued.

“I will accept whatever consequences follow.”

Then she walked away.

No excuse.

No defense.

Adrian watched from the courthouse steps.

His smile had vanished.

That evening, Rachel’s employer called.

The internal review found no misuse of company resources.

She could return Monday.

A small victory.

Then Daniel arrived for his parenting time with Lily.

He looked thinner.

Rachel handed over Lily’s backpack.

“Her snack is inside.”

Lily wrapped both arms around Rachel’s neck.

“No.”

Rachel’s heart broke.

“It’s Daddy time, sweetheart.”

“No Daddy.”

Daniel flinched.

Rachel didn’t enjoy it.

That surprised her.

She knelt.

“Daddy loves you.”

Daniel looked at her.

Rachel meant it.

Love was not the same as trust.

Or safety.

Or marriage.

But denying what existed would make her like everyone else.

Lily eventually let Daniel hold her.

He carried her toward the car.

Then stopped.

“Thank you.”

“For what?”

“Not poisoning her against me.”

Rachel stared.

“She’s two.”

“Some people start early.”

“Don’t make me regret it.”

Daniel nodded.

Before leaving, he said, “Adrian is panicking.”

“How do you know?”

“He called me last night.”

“You still talk?”

“He talks. I listen.”

“What does he want?”

“The original ledger.”

“We don’t have it.”

“He thinks Margaret does.”

“She doesn’t.”

Daniel looked toward the house.

“Then find it before he does.”

Rachel’s eyes narrowed.

“Why are you helping me?”

“I’m helping Lily.”

“No. Try again.”

Daniel looked exhausted.

“Adrian told me he would report the trust-account transfer to the bar unless I testify that you authorized the redevelopment.”

Rachel stared.

“Will you?”

Daniel looked away.

She laughed bitterly.

“You’re still deciding.”

“I could lose everything.”

“You already did.”

His face tightened.

Rachel continued.

“You just haven’t admitted it yet.”

Daniel put Lily in the car.

Rachel watched them leave.

An hour later, Vanessa called.

Her voice was barely audible.

“I found Ellis.”

Rachel stood.

“Where?”

“He’s at Adrian’s lake house.”

“Do not go there.”

“I’m already outside.”

“Vanessa.”

“He has the green folder.”

Rachel’s pulse exploded.

“How do you know?”

“I saw it through the window.”

“Call the police.”

“I can’t.”

“Yes, you can.”

“No.”

Vanessa began crying.

“Noah is inside.”

Rachel went cold.

“What?”

“Adrian brought him here.”

“Why?”

“I think he knows I gave you the phone.”

Rachel grabbed her keys.

Claire’s warning echoed in her head.

Do not confront Adrian privately.

Rachel stopped herself.

May you like

Instead, she called Detective Fields.

And for once, she chose not to run toward danger just because someone she loved might be standing inside it.
