Chapter 14 - Maya’s Ledger

Maya returned on the fourth day.
Not because David found her.
Because Noah did.
He sent one message from Claire’s phone.
I’m sorry Dad fired you. I found Silver Dawn’s carrot tin. Please come back.
Maya arrived before dinner.
David met her in the stable.
“I was wrong.”
“You were angry.”
“I was wrong to fire you.”
“Yes.”
He almost smiled.
“You could make this easier.”
“I could. You don’t need easier.”
He nodded.
“Come back.”
“As stable manager?”
“As whatever you want.”
Maya looked toward Stall Twelve.
“I want the truth finished.”
They returned to the office.
Maya opened an old encrypted ledger Eleanor had asked her to maintain.
It contained every suspicious payment from 2016 onward.
With Victoria’s drives, they traced the flow.
Mercer Ridge paid shells.
Shells paid Halcyon.
Halcyon transferred money to accounts controlled by Grant.
But the missing ten million had not vanished offshore.
It had gone into an escrow account at Piedmont Commonwealth Bank.
Lena stared.
“Escrow for what?”
Maya opened the wire description.
ACQUISITION — MERCER RIDGE ASSETS.
David felt fury.
“Grant put our stolen money aside to buy us.”
Victoria sat very still.
“He was going to use Mercer Ridge money to acquire Mercer Ridge.”
Claire whispered, “That’s almost elegant.”
David looked at her.
“Wrong room for admiration.”
Lena was already calling the bank’s fraud counsel.
If the funds could be frozen, the company might recover enough to cure the debt.
But Grant had anticipated them.
Twenty minutes later Lena hung up.
“The escrow was released yesterday.”
David’s hope collapsed.
“To whom?”
“A trust account.”
“Grant’s?”
“No.”
The beneficiary was listed as Penn Strategic Holdings.
Harold Penn.
The supposedly independent director.
Victoria stared.
“He’s the last layer.”
Maya nodded.
“Grant needed someone on the board to legitimize the collapse.”
David finally understood.
Harold’s payments were not merely bribes.
He was Grant’s acquisition vehicle.
They called Harold.
He denied everything.
Then Maya showed him one wire.
His confidence disappeared.
“You don’t understand,” Harold said.
David answered, “Then explain.”
“Grant told me this was a restructuring.”
“For ten million dollars?”
“I was supposed to hold the funds.”
“Where are they?”
Harold’s voice shook.
“I don’t know.”
David nearly shouted.
Lena stopped him with one look.
Harold continued.
“Grant controls the trust account.”
“Then why your company?”
“He said he needed independence from Halcyon.”
Victoria laughed.
“You were his clean buyer.”
Silence.
Harold finally said, “I want immunity.”
Lena replied, “We cannot give you that.”
“I’ll talk to federal investigators.”
Now everyone went still.
Federal.
Wire fraud.
Bank fraud.
Potentially interstate transactions.
The scale had changed.
Lena said carefully, “Then retain criminal counsel and preserve every device.”
Harold whispered, “Grant will destroy me.”
David said, “Get in line.”
Afterward Maya looked at him.
“You enjoyed that.”
“A little.”
“That’s dangerous.”
David knew she was right.
Revenge could become another form of carelessness.
That night, Noah found David alone in Stall Twelve.
“Are we keeping the farm?”
“I’m trying.”
“Can I help?”
“No.”
Noah frowned.
“The key helped.”
David knelt.
“The key nearly got you hurt.”
“That was Aunt Victoria.”
“Yes.”
“And you said what she did wasn’t my fault.”
David nodded.
“But protecting this family is my job.”
Noah looked around the stall.
“Grandma didn’t think one person could do it.”
David frowned.
“What?”
“Maya said Silver Dawn always had another horse beside her when she traveled because she hated being alone.”
Noah touched the old brass plate.
“Maybe people are like that.”
David smiled despite himself.
“You’re eight.”
“I know.”
“You’re not supposed to be wise.”
Noah shrugged.
Then Maya appeared at the stall entrance.
“David.”
Her face was pale.
“Lena found the trust account.”
“And?”
“Grant didn’t send the ten million abroad.”
“Where?”
Maya handed him the document.
The money had been used that morning.
Not to buy Mercer Ridge.
To purchase the accelerated $8.4 million bank loan itself.
Grant now controlled the debt.
He no longer needed to wait for the bank.
He could foreclose personally.
And the notice had already been filed.
