Chapter 7 - The Woman Who Left

Claire Mercer—now Claire Sutton—answered on the first call.

“Don’t say my name where Victoria can hear you.”

David’s anger returned instantly.

“You sent that message?”

“Yes.”

“You knew about Halcyon?”

“I knew enough to be afraid of it.”

“You took two million dollars from my mother.”

Silence.

Then Claire said, “So you finally found the settlement.”

David walked away from Maya and Lena.

“What did you have on me?”

“You really want to do this now?”

“I want the truth.”

“You borrowed company money.”

“I repaid it.”

“You lied to me about it.”

“That was between us.”

“No. Your mother made it family business.”

David clenched his jaw.

Claire continued.

“She offered money because she thought I would use your mistake during the divorce.”

“Would you?”

“At the time? Maybe.”

The honesty hurt.

“But that wasn’t why I left Virginia.”

“Why did you?”

“Victoria.”

David went still.

Claire’s voice lowered.

“She told me you were having an affair.”

“I never—”

“I know.”

“You know now?”

“I knew three years ago.”

David struggled to process it.

“What did she show you?”

“Messages. Hotel receipts. Photographs.”

“Fake?”

“Mostly.”

“Mostly?”

“One hotel receipt was yours.”

David remembered a breeding conference in Kentucky.

Victoria had attended too.

Claire said, “She built a lie around something real. She’s good at that.”

David thought of the signatures.

Some genuine.

Some forged.

Same pattern.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because by the time I learned, we had already destroyed each other.”

For a moment neither spoke.

Then David asked, “Who owns Halcyon?”

“Grant used to.”

“And now?”

“I found a beneficial ownership schedule in documents Eleanor gave me.”

“When?”

“Before the settlement.”

David’s grip tightened.

“You’ve had evidence for six years?”

“I had one page.”

“Why keep it?”

“Insurance.”

“Against whom?”

“Victoria.”

Claire sent the page.

Halcyon’s ownership was split through two entities.

Forty percent: Grant Hale.

Forty percent: VLM Capital LLC.

Twenty percent: an unnamed investor.

David knew Victoria’s middle name.

Louise.

VLM.

He felt sick.

“She owns it.”

“Indirectly.”

“And the last twenty percent?”

“That’s why you need to be careful.”

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

Claire inhaled.

“But your mother did.”

Back at Mercer Ridge, Lena studied the ownership page.

“If authentic, this establishes a direct conflict of interest.”

Maya said, “And self-dealing.”

David nodded.

“Victoria arranged loans against company property while secretly owning the company positioned to acquire it.”

Lena raised a hand.

“We still need current ownership evidence. This page is old.”

David hated the discipline of legal reality.

Every revelation seemed to require three more proofs.

Then Maya’s phone chimed.

Security alert.

Someone was at the gate.

A sheriff’s cruiser.

Two deputies walked to the front door.

David met them outside.

“Mr. Mercer?”

“Yes.”

“We received a report involving potential child abuse at this residence.”

David stared.

Behind the deputies, another car arrived.

Victoria stepped out.

Noah appeared at the upstairs window.

David understood immediately.

“She called you.”

The deputy said, “Sir, we need to speak with Noah.”

Victoria approached.

“I told them everything.”

David laughed in disbelief.

“Everything?”

“That you left him unsupervised at a commercial stable. That you encouraged him to take confidential property. That you exposed him to a violent confrontation.”

“You created the violent confrontation.”

Victoria’s voice softened for the deputies.

“My brother is under enormous financial stress.”

David took a step toward her.

Lena caught his arm.

“David.”

Victoria saw the movement and stepped back.

Perfect performance.

The deputy noticed.

David stopped.

He finally understood how she had survived so long.

She did not merely lie.

She arranged situations in which the truth looked like someone else’s instability.

Maya appeared.

“I have video.”

Victoria smiled faintly.

“I’m sure you do.”

The deputies interviewed Noah separately with David’s consent and Lena nearby.

Twenty minutes later, they emerged.

One deputy spoke to Victoria.

“Ms. Mercer, we need you to come with us voluntarily to answer questions about yesterday.”

Her smile disappeared.

“You’re taking his word?”

“We’re taking evidence.”

Maya handed over a copy of the video.

Victoria turned toward David.

“This is what you want?”

“No.”

“What, then?”

“My son safe.”

“You’ll lose everything trying to prove you’re better than me.”

David looked at her.

“I’m not trying to prove that anymore.”

That unsettled her.

As she was escorted toward the cruiser, Victoria said one final thing.

“Ask Claire who the last twenty percent belongs to.”

David’s stomach tightened.

Victoria smiled.

“Your ex-wife didn’t contact you to help.”

May you like

She leaned closer.

“She contacted you because Halcyon is about to make her very rich.”
