Chapter 12 - Nora’s Last Lie

The headline appeared at 6:20 the next morning.
MERCER FOUNDER’S WIDOWER ACCUSED OF DOMESTIC ABUSE AS FAMILY EMPIRE FACES SALE.
Ryan threw his phone across the kitchen.
It hit the couch.
Not the wall.
He noticed the difference.
So did Emma.
She was eating cereal.
“Good catch,” she said.
Ryan looked at her.
“What?”
“You didn’t break it.”
He almost laughed.
Instead, he sat beside her.
“I’m learning.”
Emma pushed the cereal box toward him.
Maya arrived ten minutes later.
“You’re not going to like today.”
“I haven’t liked any day this week.”
“Victor’s lawyer released part of an old recording.”
Ryan closed his eyes.
“What recording?”
“Your argument with Nora.”
The audio had been captured by a smart-home security microphone in the Mercer residence.
Ryan’s voice was unmistakable.
IF YOU TAKE EMMA AND DISAPPEAR, I SWEAR TO GOD I’LL DESTROY YOU.
Nora answered:
THAT IS EXACTLY WHY I’M LEAVING.
The clip ended.
No context.
No later apology.
No proof Ryan never touched her.
Just rage.
Maya said, “Victor kept archived security data.”
“Insurance.”
“Yes.”
“Why release this?”
“To make himself useful to everyone.”
Ryan watched Emma.
“Turn off the internet in the house.”
“Ryan—”
“I don’t want her seeing it.”
“You can’t protect her from everything.”
“I can protect her from that.”
Emma spoke from the table.
“I already heard it.”
Silence.
Ryan turned.
She looked at her cereal.
“One girl sent it to me.”
His heart broke.
“Emma…”
“Were you going to destroy Mom?”
“No.”
“But you said it.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Ryan sat across from her.
He could feel Maya behind him.
Witnessing.
Judging.
Maybe protecting.
“I was afraid.”
Emma frowned.
“People sound angry when they’re afraid?”
“Sometimes.”
“That’s dumb.”
“Yes.”
She looked up.
“Did Mom leave because of you?”
Ryan answered slowly.
“She was planning to leave for a little while because of me.”
Emma’s eyes filled.
He continued before fear made him lie.
“She wanted me to become a better husband and father.”
“Were you?”
“No.”
The word hurt.
“But I wanted to be.”
Emma wiped her cheek.
“Did she love you?”
“I think she did.”
“Then why did everyone lie?”
Ryan had no answer.
Maya did.
“Because some people found Nora’s truth dangerous.”
Emma looked at her.
“What truth?”
“That money was being stolen.”
“And Aunt Celeste hurt her?”
Maya glanced at Ryan.
He nodded.
“We think so.”
Emma pushed away the cereal.
“I hate her.”
Ryan understood.
But he remembered how hatred had already shaped one Mercer sibling.
“You can be angry.”
“I hate her.”
“You can feel that too.”
Emma looked surprised.
He continued.
“But you don’t have to become her.”
That afternoon, the corrupted sixth file from Nora’s USB was partially recovered.
Ortiz played it at the station.
Nora’s voice emerged beneath distortion.
“…if Ryan hears what I said about leaving, he’ll think…”
Static.
Then:
“…I told Celeste he frightened me. That was true. But I also told her I still loved him.”
Ryan closed his eyes.
The audio continued.
“She keeps twisting everything.”
Then a sound.
A door.
Nora’s voice changed.
“Celeste?”
Another voice.
Female.
“You should have left this alone.”
Nora replied, “You stole from Emma.”
“I borrowed what I built.”
“It wasn’t yours.”
“You think Gerald gave you that trust because you deserved it?”
“He gave it to Emma.”
“He gave you power over me.”
There was movement.
Then Nora said:
“Douglas is using you.”
Celeste laughed.
“You don’t know Douglas.”
“I know he owns your debt.”
Silence.
Ryan looked at Maya.
“What?”
Maya’s eyes widened.
The recording continued.
Nora said, “The Telluride guarantee. He bought it from the lender. You think he saved you. He owns you.”
Celeste’s voice was suddenly less certain.
“You’re lying.”
“Check the assignment.”
The file distorted.
Then one final sentence from Nora:
“When this comes out, Douglas will sacrifice you first.”
The recording ended.
Ryan stared at Ortiz.
“Nora knew Celeste wasn’t the top.”
Maya nodded.
“Douglas controlled her debt.”
Celeste had stolen millions to rescue her failed investment.
Douglas had quietly bought the debt.
Then used that leverage to keep her compliant.
A conspiracy built on greed had become one built on blackmail.
Ortiz’s phone rang.
She answered.
After a moment, she looked toward Ryan.
“We found Douglas.”
“Where?”
“Private airfield in Centennial.”
“Leaving?”
“No.”
“What was he doing?”
“Meeting Celeste.”
Ryan felt something shift.
“Celeste told me she hadn’t spoken to him.”
“She lied.”
“What were they doing?”
Ortiz slid a surveillance photograph across the table.
Celeste stood beside Douglas’s car.
Douglas was handing her a document pouch.
“Police stopped her vehicle afterward,” Ortiz said.
“What was inside?”
“Northstar merger documents.”
Ryan exhaled.
“And?”
Ortiz placed a second photograph down.
A black leather notebook.
Burned around the edges.
Ryan stared.
“The ledger.”
“Part of it.”
“Where did Douglas get it?”
“We’re asking him.”
“Is he arrested?”
“Both of them are being detained for questioning while warrants are executed.”
Ryan’s pulse raced.
Finally.
Then Ortiz’s expression changed.
“There’s one problem.”
“What?”
“The ledger contains Snowcap payments.”
“We know.”
“It also contains a payment marked RM.”
Ryan froze.
“How much?”
“Eight hundred thousand dollars.”
Maya stared at him.
Ryan shook his head.
“No.”
Ortiz pushed a photocopy forward.
May you like
RM — 800.
“Tell me,” she said, “why Nora’s secret ledger appears to show eight hundred thousand dollars paid to you.”
