Chapter 16 - No Way Back

The divorce petition was real.

Maya retrieved it from a sealed draft file at Nora’s former law firm.

It had never been filed with the court.

Nora had signed it.

January 5, 2023.

Three days before she disappeared.

Ryan read the first page in silence.

Dissolution of Marriage.

Temporary parenting plan.

Request for separate residence.

His eyes burned.

“I thought she wanted space.”

“She did,” Maya said.

“This is more than space.”

“She may have changed her mind.”

“She signed it.”

“She didn’t file it.”

Ryan laughed bitterly.

“Is that supposed to help?”

“No.”

Maya sat across from him.

“But you cannot let shame turn into another mistake.”

He looked at her.

“What mistake?”

“Trying to control what people think.”

Douglas released the petition that evening.

Within hours, the narrative shifted again.

Nora had planned to divorce Ryan.

Ryan had threatened to “destroy” her if she took Emma.

Then Nora disappeared.

Every fact was real.

The conclusion was false.

That was what made it dangerous.

A cable network parked trucks outside Ryan’s house.

Protesters appeared.

Mercer Alpine investors demanded answers.

The company’s acting CEO suspended Ryan’s building access entirely.

Emma’s custody evaluator requested she spend three nights with a court-approved family friend while the media situation was assessed.

Ryan fought.

Then stopped fighting when Emma whispered, “I don’t want people outside shouting.”

She stayed with Maya.

That was Ryan’s lowest night.

The house was empty.

Nora’s chair stood beside the fireplace.

Emma’s cereal bowl from breakfast remained in the dishwasher.

Ryan poured whiskey.

Then stared at it.

Nora used to hate when he drank angry.

He poured it down the sink.

At midnight, Detective Ortiz arrived.

“We found the body-camera file.”

Ryan opened the door wider.

“Where?”

“Victor gave us the location.”

“Why now?”

“His lawyer got a cooperation framework from the DA.”

“Show me.”

“Not here.”

At the station, the video filled a monitor.

Timestamp:

January 23, 2023.

11:36 p.m.

The image bounced as Victor entered Elkstone Tunnel.

Voices echoed ahead.

Nora.

Celeste.

“You can still come with me,” Nora said.

Celeste shouted, “Give me the ledger!”

“No.”

“Douglas will ruin me!”

“Then let him.”

“You don’t understand!”

“I understand that you chained me to a pipe.”

A struggle.

The camera rounded a corner.

Ryan leaned toward the screen.

Nora stood near the tunnel opening.

Celeste faced her.

A flashlight in Celeste’s hand.

Nora held the black ledger.

Nora said, “Emma deserves better than this family.”

Celeste lunged for the book.

Nora shoved her away.

Celeste swung the flashlight.

It struck Nora’s shoulder.

Nora staggered.

Celeste grabbed her coat.

Fabric tore.

For one second, Celeste appeared to pull Nora upward.

Then Nora slipped.

She vanished over the edge.

Celeste screamed.

Not triumph.

Horror.

Victor ran forward.

The camera pointed downward.

Nora lay twenty feet below on a narrow ledge.

Moving.

Alive.

Ryan stood abruptly.

“She was alive.”

Ortiz nodded.

On the video, Nora cried weakly.

“Help…”

Celeste started down.

Then Victor grabbed her.

“We need Douglas.”

“No!”

“We can’t call anyone!”

“She’s alive!”

Victor pulled out his phone.

The recording captured Douglas through speakerphone.

“What happened?”

Celeste shouted, “She fell!”

Douglas answered instantly.

“Leave.”

Ryan felt ice spread through his body.

Celeste screamed, “She’s alive!”

Douglas repeated, “Leave now.”

Victor said, “If we rescue her, she talks.”

Silence.

Then Celeste whispered, “We can’t leave her.”

Douglas said, “You already kidnapped her. You already forced the signature. If she lives, all of you go to prison.”

Nora cried below.

Ryan’s hands gripped the table.

Then Celeste looked down.

For twelve terrible seconds, she did nothing.

Finally she turned.

And walked away.

Ryan closed his eyes.

That was the crime.

Not the fall alone.

The choice.

Nora had been alive.

They had abandoned her.

Ortiz stopped the recording.

“There’s more.”

Ryan looked up.

“Victor returned thirty-six hours later.”

“Was she alive then?”

“No.”

The medical examiner now believed Nora could have survived the initial fall but likely died from untreated injuries and exposure.

Ryan could not speak.

Ortiz continued.

“This video is enough for major charges.”

“Arrest them.”

“We are preparing warrants.”

“Now.”

“We also need Douglas.”

“Where is he?”

“We think he’s still in Colorado.”

Ryan’s phone vibrated.

A text.

From Nora’s old number.

The number had been disconnected for three years.

COME TO THE CHALET.

BRING THE ORIGINAL CODICIL.

COME ALONE OR DOUGLAS BURNS THE REST.

Ryan showed Ortiz.

She stood.

“It’s bait.”

“Yes.”

“You are not going alone.”

“He wants the codicil.”

“He wants leverage.”

Another message arrived.

A photograph.

Emma’s old bedroom at the chalet.

On the bed lay Nora’s black ledger.

Intact.

The partially burned copy had been a decoy.

Ryan stared.

Then the final message:

MIDNIGHT.

Ryan looked at Ortiz.

The body-camera video had made prosecution possible.

The ledger could make the financial conspiracy undeniable.

And whoever was at the chalet believed Ryan would trade evidence for evidence.

There was no version of this ending quietly.

May you like

By midnight, one of them would make a mistake.

Ryan intended to make sure it was not him.
