Chapter 12 - The People Who Open Doors

Julian held no weapon.

That mattered.

Nathan watched his brother-in-law carefully.

“You kidnapped your sister?”

Julian looked at Cole.

“This wasn’t the plan.”

Bianca shouted, “There was never a plan with him, Julian. He was using you.”

Cole laughed.

“Everyone says that once they lose leverage.”

Nathan looked around.

“Twenty-five million?”

Cole nodded.

“Not greedy considering the assets involved.”

“You won’t get it.”

“I don’t need all of it.”

Cole pointed to Bianca.

“She knows where your authentication key is.”

Nathan understood.

The physical banking token stored in his private safe.

Bianca looked at him.

“I never gave it to them.”

Cole’s smile vanished.

“That became inconvenient.”

Nathan stared at Bianca.

For the first time since the yacht, he believed something she said without reservation.

Cole continued.

“Julian thought forged paperwork was enough. It wasn’t. Banks became cautious.”

Julian snapped, “Because you rushed it.”

“You were three weeks from default.”

Nathan looked at Julian.

“How much do you owe?”

Julian’s face tightened.

“Forty-three million.”

“You destroyed your sister’s marriage for forty-three million dollars.”

Julian exploded.

“You think this started with money?”

“Yes.”

“Our father came home from Mercer jobs smelling like diesel and humiliation. Then your father accused him of theft and destroyed his business.”

“Your father was stealing.”

Julian flinched.

Bianca shouted, “He knows, Julian!”

Julian looked at her.

She was crying.

“The ledger proves it.”

Julian’s face twisted.

“You don’t know what it proves.”

“It has Dad’s handwriting.”

“He had Samuel Pike’s help because Mercer underpaid him for years.”

Nathan said, “So theft becomes justice if you feel cheated?”

Julian stepped toward him.

“You inherited everything.”

“And you decided that entitled you to mine?”

“My family paid for yours.”

Cole interrupted.

“Beautiful. Generational resentment. Very expensive.”

Julian turned on him.

“Shut up.”

Cole raised the pistol slightly.

Julian stopped.

Nathan saw it.

The power had shifted.

Cole had blackmailed Julian too.

“How much have you taken from him?” Nathan asked.

Cole smiled.

“Enough.”

Nathan kept talking.

“You found Samuel Pike’s records.”

“Yes.”

“And learned your grandfather was guilty.”

Cole’s face changed.

Nathan knew he had touched the real wound.

“You came into Mercer expecting to prove he was framed,” Nathan said. “Instead you discovered he helped Elliot steal.”

“Careful.”

“So you changed the story.”

Cole pointed the gun at Nathan’s chest.

“You know nothing about my family.”

“I know enough. You spent twelve years trying to turn your grandfather’s guilt into someone else’s debt.”

Bianca whispered, “Nathan…”

He saw her warning.

Cole was losing composure.

Nathan changed direction.

“You copied the surveillance.”

“Yes.”

“You threatened Sofia.”

“Yes.”

“Her sister?”

Cole shrugged.

“Useful pressure.”

Julian stared at him.

“You told me Bianca sent those messages.”

Cole looked amused.

Julian’s face drained.

Another fracture.

Nathan pressed.

“He wanted you isolated. Same way you wanted Sofia isolated.”

Bianca looked at her brother.

“You see it now?”

Julian said nothing.

Outside, faintly, came the sound of tires on wet pavement.

Cole heard it.

His eyes sharpened.

“You brought police.”

Nathan said nothing.

Cole grabbed Bianca and hauled her upright.

Julian stepped forward.

“Don’t touch her.”

Cole pointed the pistol at him.

“Now you remember you’re her brother?”

Julian stopped.

Nathan moved one step.

Cole swung back toward him.

“Don’t.”

A loudspeaker outside:

“Cole Bennett! State Police! Put down the weapon and come out with your hands visible!”

Cole cursed.

Nathan had not told police he was going.

But Margaret had tracked his vehicle.

For once, Nathan’s refusal to follow instructions had been anticipated by people smarter than him.

Cole dragged Bianca toward the rear door.

Julian lunged.

The gun fired.

The shot struck a metal beam.

Everyone froze.

Nathan tackled Cole.

They crashed into stacked crates.

The pistol slid away.

Julian kicked it toward the wall.

Police entered seconds later.

Cole was pinned.

Bianca collapsed against Julian.

Nathan stood, breathing hard.

It should have felt like victory.

It didn’t.

Cole looked up from the floor and smiled.

“You still think I’m North?”

Nathan stared.

Cole laughed.

“I told you. North is a door.”

Police pulled him upright.

As he passed Nathan, Cole whispered:

“Ask who hired me.”

Nathan turned.

Cole was led away.

Julian sat on the floor beside Bianca.

Nathan looked at him.

“Did you?”

Julian shook his head.

Bianca did too.

And Nathan suddenly realized the one person with motive, history, and access who had been quietly standing near every major decision.

Someone who knew the partnership dispute.

Someone who knew Nathan’s corporate weaknesses.

Someone who had warned Nathan not to make things personal.

May you like

Robert Mercer.
