Chapter 13 - Uncle Robert’s Offer

Nathan confronted Robert at dawn.

His uncle listened without interrupting.

When Nathan finished, Robert poured two coffees.

“You think I hired Cole.”

“Did you?”

“No.”

“Did you know his grandfather was Samuel Pike?”

“Yes.”

Nathan stared.

“You hired him anyway?”

“I hired his mother first.”

“What?”

“Laura Bennett came to me eighteen years ago.”

Nathan sat.

Robert explained that Laura Pike had discovered her father’s old records after his death. She believed Samuel had participated in fraud but also believed James Mercer had concealed the full scheme to protect Mercer Maritime’s reputation.

“She threatened to go public,” Robert said.

“What did you do?”

“Paid her.”

Nathan’s jaw tightened.

“How much?”

“Four hundred thousand.”

“For silence.”

“For the documents.”

“You buried evidence.”

“Yes.”

Nathan stood.

Robert’s calmness infuriated him.

“That concealment created Cole.”

Robert’s eyes hardened.

“Cole created Cole.”

“You fed his family grievance.”

“I protected the company.”

“There it is again.”

Nathan laughed bitterly.

“The sacred company.”

Robert stood too.

“You enjoy condemning decisions made before you had responsibility for thousands of employees.”

“You bribed a whistleblower.”

“I bought stolen family documents.”

“Semantics.”

“Law matters.”

“So does truth.”

Robert looked tired.

“For men like your father, truth was always negotiable when payroll came due.”

Nathan hated hearing that.

“Did my father know?”

“No.”

“Did you hire Cole later?”

“I approved his employment.”

“Why?”

“Because I thought giving him a legitimate career might end the obsession.”

“It gave him access.”

“Yes.”

For once Robert looked ashamed.

Nathan said, “Did you know about Meridian?”

“No.”

“Bianca?”

“No.”

“Julian’s debts?”

“Of course.”

Nathan paused.

“Did you short Vale Development debt?”

Robert smiled faintly.

Nathan understood.

“You profited.”

“I purchased distressed notes through a fund.”

“While telling me to stay out of the situation.”

“I told you not to interfere emotionally.”

“You were positioning yourself to take Julian’s assets.”

“If his company defaults, someone will.”

Nathan shook his head.

Robert continued.

“And now I have an offer.”

Nathan stared.

“Of course you do.”

“Step aside as CEO temporarily.”

Nathan laughed.

“No.”

“The board is nervous.”

“You made them nervous.”

“Your conduct made them nervous.”

Nathan thought of the warehouse.

Ignoring investigators.

His public call to Vale lenders.

He had made mistakes.

Robert knew exactly how to weaponize them.

“Temporary leave,” Robert said. “Until the investigations conclude.”

“And you run Mercer.”

“Yes.”

Nathan saw the pattern.

Robert may not have created Cole’s conspiracy.

But he was prepared to profit from it.

“No.”

Robert’s expression cooled.

“Then the board may vote.”

At noon, they did.

Nathan survived by one vote.

But the board imposed restrictions on his authority over extraordinary transactions during the investigation.

He had won.

And lost power anyway.

Meanwhile, Bianca met prosecutors with Grant Holloway.

She began cooperating.

She admitted photographing Nathan’s estate documents, copying his signature image, accessing the archive using a forged authorization, and helping establish Meridian based on false documents.

She denied creating the false bank-transfer order.

She identified Julian as the person who instructed her to gather information.

Julian, through separate counsel, blamed Cole for escalating the scheme.

Grant Holloway faced his own questions regarding Meridian.

He claimed Bianca told him Nathan approved the structure.

His position was weak.

Sofia gave investigators the threatening messages.

Claire provided Ava’s statements through a child-specialist interview process designed to avoid repeated questioning.

Nathan was deliberately excluded.

That hurt.

But he understood.

Ava should not become evidence every adult pulled in different directions.

Two days later, Nathan received a call from Claire.

“Ava wants to see you.”

He drove to Boston.

Ava ran into his arms.

He held her longer than usual.

“Daddy?”

“Yes?”

“Is Bianca going to jail?”

Nathan struggled.

“I don’t know.”

“Is Sofia?”

“No.”

“Because of the camera?”

“Because Sofia didn’t do anything wrong.”

Ava nodded.

Then asked the question he feared.

“Did Bianca love me?”

Nathan looked toward Claire.

She gave him no rescue.

He had to answer.

“I think Bianca had feelings she didn’t know how to handle.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

Six years old.

And already demanding the truth adults avoided.

Nathan swallowed.

“I think she loved parts of our family. But she also did things that were wrong and frightening. Love doesn’t make those things okay.”

Ava thought about it.

Then whispered, “I still miss her sometimes.”

Nathan’s heart broke.

“You’re allowed to.”

That evening, Sofia asked Nathan to speak privately.

“I’m resigning.”

He stared.

“No.”

Her expression hardened.

“This isn’t a negotiation.”

“Sofia—”

“My sister is terrified. I’m terrified. Ava needs less chaos.”

“You’re family.”

“You treated me like staff when Bianca accused me.”

Nathan had no defense.

Sofia’s eyes filled.

“I love Ava. That’s why I have to leave before I start resenting everyone around her.”

Nathan looked down.

He had survived the board.

Caught Cole.

Broken the conspiracy open.

And now he was losing the person Ava trusted most.

Because of the moment in Chapter One when he had hesitated.

Sofia placed her yacht keycard on the table.

May you like

Then walked away.
