Chapter 10 - The Trust They Needed to Break

Claire’s trust was twenty-eight pages long.

Lucas had signed acceptance as trustee three years earlier.

He remembered almost none of the language.

Helen read the relevant provision aloud.

“If the serving trustee is found by a court of competent jurisdiction to have committed serious abuse, neglect, abandonment, or financial exploitation against Ethan Carter, the trustee shall be removed.”

Lucas looked away.

Claire had insisted on it.

“You never know what happens to people after someone dies,” she had told him.

He had been offended.

“Do you think I’m going to hurt our son?”

“No.”

“Then why?”

“Because legal documents are written for impossible days.”

The impossible day had arrived.

Victoria and Graham needed a judicial finding.

Not an accusation.

Not social-media outrage.

A finding.

That explained the coached statements.

The recordings.

The engineered breakfast incident.

If Ethan appeared reckless and unstable, Victoria could claim Lucas neglected him.

If Lucas became furious enough to frighten Ethan publicly, even better.

If Lucas physically reacted, best of all.

He had already handed them the garage recording.

Fortunately Ethan was not present.

Helen tapped the document.

“They still need a court finding involving Ethan.”

“Victoria filed for one.”

“Yes.”

“Can she win?”

“Not on the current evidence.”

“What about her recordings?”

“They can hurt you. Some are real.”

Lucas nodded.

“She’s not lying that I yell.”

“No.”

“She’s lying about why.”

“Context matters. But so does behavior.”

Lucas accepted it.

That afternoon Dana uncovered a second layer.

Graham’s shell company Marlowe Partners held nine percent of Carter Hospitality.

Another minority holder, Alder Ridge, held eight percent.

Alder Ridge had borrowed money from Meridian.

“If Graham controls nine and Meridian influences eight,” Lucas said, “that’s seventeen.”

“Plus sympathetic outside investors.”

“Still not enough.”

“Add Ethan’s twenty-six under a successor trustee.”

Lucas calculated.

Forty-three percent.

Then the family foundation’s fifteen.

Graham had recently promised the foundation a $12 million post-sale endowment.

Total coalition:

Fifty-eight.

They only needed two more percent.

Meridian already had commitments.

The plan could work.

Lucas called Eleanor.

She listened in silence.

Then said:

“I need documentary proof on the foundation condition.”

“We’re getting it.”

“Get it before the sale vote.”

“When?”

“Graham wants one Friday.”

It was Tuesday.

Three days.

Lucas looked at the calendar.

His family-court hearing on Ethan’s welfare was scheduled Friday morning.

The sale vote was Friday afternoon.

He almost admired the timing.

Court first.

Trust second.

Company third.

Everything was coordinated.

That evening Ethan ate dinner with Lucas and Rachel.

Rice.

Chicken.

Green beans.

Halfway through, Ethan stopped eating.

Lucas noticed.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“You're staring at the food.”

Ethan pushed the rice away.

Lucas understood.

The breakfast incident had involved orange juice, not rice, but Victoria had used meals as battlegrounds before.

“What did she do?”

Ethan looked embarrassed.

“She made me sit at the table until I finished.”

“That’s normal sometimes.”

“She made me sit until three in the morning.”

Lucas’s face changed.

“When?”

“When you were in New York.”

Rachel put down her fork.

“How old were you?”

“Eight.”

“What were you supposed to finish?”

“Mushrooms.”

Lucas closed his eyes.

He had called that night.

Victoria said Ethan was asleep.

The pattern made him cold.

“She told me you said I had to.”

“I didn’t.”

“I know now.”

Lucas moved the rice away from Ethan.

“You never have to finish something because you’re scared.”

Ethan looked at him.

“Even vegetables?”

Rachel laughed.

Lucas almost did.

“Nice try.”

The brief lightness vanished when Helen called.

Police had received partial subscriber data from the anonymous threat sent to Luis.

The account that purchased the messaging service had logged in from two places.

North Harbor’s office.

And the Carter family home.

On nights Lucas was traveling.

Someone inside his marriage had been helping Graham intimidate witnesses long before the slap.
