Chapter 9 - Claire Had Warned Him

Claire’s emails were not dramatic.
That made them more devastating.
She wrote like a lawyer.
Short sentences.
Dates.
Amounts.
Questions.
No accusations she could not prove.
North Harbor ownership still undisclosed.
G.V. bypassed vendor committee twice.
Need audit before Q4.
Lucas says Graham would never steal. Lucas is emotionally incapable of imagining betrayal from old friends.
Lucas stopped reading.
Rachel looked over his shoulder.
“She wrote that?”
“Yes.”
“Was she wrong?”
“No.”
He remembered the conversation.
Claire had been in treatment.
Thin.
Exhausted.
Still working.
“Graham is hiding something,” she told him.
Lucas kissed her forehead.
“Graham has been with us since before we could afford real desks.”
“That is not evidence of honesty.”
“You're worrying too much.”
Claire’s expression hardened.
“I have cancer, Lucas. I am not stupid.”
He had apologized.
But he had not ordered the audit.
The next month Claire’s condition worsened.
Everything else disappeared beneath hospitals, medication schedules, and fear.
Graham knew it.
The payments slowed during her final months.
Then resumed after her death.
Lucas covered his face.
“I failed her.”
Rachel sat beside him.
“You were losing your wife.”
“I still failed to listen.”
“Both can be true.”
He hated how often truth came in pairs.
Dana recovered one archived document.
Claire had created an audit memorandum titled:
PROJECT LANTERN
The attachment was gone.
The email referenced the encrypted USB.
Full supporting files transferred to C.C. executive drive.
Lucas whispered, “Victoria has the only copy.”
Helen corrected him.
“We know she had the physical device. We don't know whether data remains.”
“She hasn't destroyed it.”
“How do you know?”
“Because Ethan heard them arguing about what was on it.”
“Maybe they couldn't decrypt it.”
That was likely.
Claire’s executive drives used hardware encryption requiring either her old credentials or recovery authorization held by corporate IT.
Graham had never had legal access.
Victoria could possess the drive for years and still not open it.
But she could destroy it.
Why hadn't she?
Maybe she was bargaining with Graham.
Maybe she wanted leverage.
The affair did not mean trust.
People who conspired over money usually trusted money more than each other.
Meanwhile, Graham made his first major move as acting CEO.
He announced a “strategic review” of the company.
Meridian Crest Capital was invited back into negotiations.
Lucas called Eleanor.
“You’re allowing this?”
“The board voted four-three.”
“On Graham’s recommendation?”
“Yes.”
“He has undisclosed side compensation!”
“Under investigation.”
Lucas nearly shouted.
Then stopped.
“What can I do?”
“Prove it.”
The answer again.
Evidence.
Lucas went to Ethan’s therapy session that evening.
Dr. Maya Levin met him afterward.
“Ethan believes anger means abandonment.”
Lucas frowned.
“Why?”
“Victoria repeatedly told him that if he made you angry enough, you would send him away.”
Lucas looked through the glass at Ethan drawing.
“Why didn't he tell me?”
Dr. Levin studied him.
“Did he try?”
Lucas thought.
Ethan saying Victoria was mean.
Lucas answering:
“She’s adjusting.”
Ethan saying he wanted Lucas home.
Lucas answering:
“You know the hotel is busy.”
Ethan saying Victoria called him spoiled.
Lucas answering:
“Maybe she’s trying to teach you responsibility.”
Lucas’s stomach turned.
“He tried.”
Dr. Levin nodded.
“Children often stop reporting when adults repeatedly reinterpret what they say.”
Lucas sat down.
He had not chosen Victoria over Ethan deliberately.
That did not mean Ethan had never experienced it that way.
The next morning, Marcus called.
He had found a forgotten camera angle.
Not breakfast.
The hotel’s underground executive entrance.
The night before the cart incident, Victoria arrived at 11:42 p.m.
Graham joined her.
He handed her something.
A white envelope.
She opened it.
Inside was a document.
Marcus enlarged one frame.
Across the top:
PETITION FOR REMOVAL OF TRUSTEE
Lucas stared.
The legal attack on Ethan’s trust had been prepared before breakfast.
Before Victoria was slapped by public opinion.
Before Lucas confronted Graham.
Before any excuse they now claimed.

The crisis had not triggered their plan.
The crisis was their plan.
