Chapter 16 - Midnight Becomes Inevitable

By morning, the investigation had stopped being a family dispute.

State police, federal agents, financial-crimes investigators, and prosecutors crowded into the temporary command room at Halcyon House.

The original stock ledger from Owen’s storage unit proved Laura had owned fifty-one percent before the disputed transfer.

That alone did not void the transfer.

But technicians also recovered a laptop.

On it were draft versions of Laura’s share-transfer agreement.

One file contained a pasted image of her signature.

Another showed the consideration amount being changed from ten dollars to one-point-six million.

A third included metadata listing Owen Kessler as the author.

“That proves forgery,” Laura said.

Samuel nodded.

“Strongly.”

“Then why do we still need the meeting?”

Torres answered.

“We don’t need it for the share case.”

“For what?”

“Celeste.”

They had enough to charge her with financial crimes.

Enough to charge her in connection with Daniel’s confinement.

But prosecutors wanted direct evidence tying her to Owen’s current destruction plan and the coercion demand she had made to Laura.

Most importantly, they wanted to locate Owen.

“We believe he’ll come,” Torres said.

Daniel hated the operation.

“You’re putting Laura in a room with two fugitives.”

“We’ll have tactical officers twenty yards away.”

“Twenty yards is a lifetime.”

Laura looked at him.

“I’m doing it.”

Sophie had been moved out of state with Naomi’s sister and two officers.

Before leaving, she hugged Laura.

“Don’t go under the floor.”

“I won’t.”

“Promise.”

“I promise.”

Daniel stood beside the car.

Sophie pointed at him.

“And don’t disappear.”

“I won’t.”

“Promise.”

Daniel hesitated.

Then said, “I promise I’ll tell you where I’m going.”

It was a better promise.

That afternoon Laura and Torres reviewed the plan.

Connecticut law made private electronic recording complicated enough that prosecutors obtained judicial authorization for the controlled operation.

Laura would wear a transmitter.

Police would monitor every word.

If Celeste produced a weapon, threatened Laura, or attempted to restrain her, officers would intervene.

“If Owen arrives?”

“Same.”

“What if Celeste confesses?”

“Keep her talking.”

Laura almost laughed.

Her sister had spent years keeping Laura talking.

Now the roles would reverse.

Daniel approached Laura as sunset began.

He handed her Victor’s letter.

“I don’t need it.”

“Take it.”

“Why?”

“Because she will try to make this about who your father loved more.”

Laura stared at him.

“She always does.”

Daniel nodded.

“Remember that you don’t have to answer.”

Laura folded the letter into her coat.

“I should have believed you.”

Daniel looked away.

“I should have trusted you enough to tell you.”

“We may never know which came first.”

“Does it matter?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because if we stay married, I don’t want to build the next fourteen years on a simplified story where Celeste ruined something perfect.”

Daniel looked at her.

Laura continued.

“We were cracked.”

“Yes.”

“She found the cracks.”

“Yes.”

“And then she drove wedges into them.”

Daniel’s eyes filled.

“That sounds about right.”

Laura touched his cheek.

It was the first time she had done so since his rescue.

“I don’t know what happens to us.”

“Neither do I.”

“But I’m not choosing Celeste.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“That’s not what I need anymore.”

“What do you need?”

“For you to choose yourself.”

At 11:41 p.m., Laura entered the greenhouse alone.

Snow had begun falling again.

Not a blizzard.

A soft, steady snow.

The broken lantern had been removed.

A new work light cast long shadows across the stone floor.

The cellar hatch was closed.

The damaged rusted latch remained attached.

Laura stood beside it.

At 11:58, the rear greenhouse door opened.

Celeste entered.

She wore a dark wool coat.

No hat.

Her hair was damp with snow.

For a second Laura saw the sister from childhood.

Then Celeste reached into her pocket.

Daniel’s repaired silver locket hung from her hand.

“You came.”

Laura looked at it.

“Where’s Owen?”

“Not here.”

“You’re lying.”

Celeste smiled.

“You still never learned to bluff.”

“And you never learned that knowing someone’s weakness isn’t the same as knowing them.”

That landed.

Celeste’s smile disappeared.

She placed the locket on the workbench.

“Sign the papers.”

Laura looked at the envelope beside it.

“No.”

“Then why are you here?”

“To hear Dad’s recording.”

Celeste stared at her.

“You really did always want his approval.”

“No.”

Laura took Victor’s letter from her coat.

“I wanted his warning sooner.”

Celeste’s face changed.

“What is that?”

“Something he wrote nine days before he died.”

“You’re lying.”

Laura opened it.

Celeste moved closer.

Laura read only one line.

“‘Celeste has always believed love is measured by who is chosen first.’”

Celeste stopped.

For the first time, Laura saw not anger.

Wounding.

Real, ancient wounding.

“Give me that.”

“No.”

“He had no right.”

“He was afraid of what you were becoming.”

“He made me this.”

“No.”

Celeste’s eyes flashed.

“He put you in front of cameras while I fixed payroll. He introduced you as the future and me as the one who was ‘good with numbers.’”

“You were good with numbers.”

“I saved his company twice.”

“So you stole it.”

“I took control.”

“You forged my signature.”

“Because you were selling us.”

“You kidnapped my husband.”

“I did not touch him.”

“You ordered Mason to hold him.”

Celeste’s mouth closed.

Laura felt the transmitter against her skin.

Every word was being recorded.

She pushed.

“You sent food to the cellar.”

“He needed food.”

“You told Owen not to let him leave until he gave the password.”

Celeste’s eyes narrowed.

“How do you know that?”

“Because Owen kept your messages.”

Fear flickered.

Laura saw it.

“Where is he?”

Celeste glanced toward the dark doorway behind Laura.

Too late.

A male voice came from the shadows.

“Ask her who paid me.”

Owen Kessler stepped into the light.

May you like

He held a pistol.

And pointed it directly at Celeste.
