Chapter 15 - Catherine’s Recording

Catherine Ashford had known.

Not everything.

Enough.

William delivered a small locked box to Hannah’s office.

Inside were three journals, a USB drive and a handwritten note.

For Claire, if Richard ever turns against Sophie.

Claire could barely read after that.

Catherine had been on Flight 617 because Leonard asked her to accompany him as “family reassurance.”

She believed Michael had suffered some kind of breakdown.

Then she heard the arguments.

By the end of the flight, she understood Leonard had fabricated Michael’s death.

Catherine secretly recorded a conversation with Michael in the galley.

His voice emerged from the USB file.

“Catherine, if Claire learns this from Leonard, he’ll tell her I did it voluntarily.”

“Did you?”

“I ran after they framed me. I didn’t fake the crash.”

“Why not go to police?”

“I did.”

“Then go to Claire.”

Michael laughed bitterly.

“Claire still thinks her father fixes everything.”

Claire shut her eyes.

Catherine said, “She loves you.”

“I know.”

“Then trust her.”

“I tried.”

Silence.

Then Michael said:

“I’m afraid if I make her choose between me and Leonard, she’ll choose him.”

Claire began crying.

William looked away.

The recording continued.

Catherine:

“And Richard?”

Michael:

“Richard wants what Leonard has.”

“What?”

“Access. Respect. The company.”

“Claire?”

Another silence.

Then Michael answered:

“I think he wants her too.”

Claire felt physically cold.

Michael had seen it before she ever knew Richard’s name.

Catherine asked:

“Do you think Richard would hurt you?”

Michael replied:

“I think Richard keeps moving the line of what he thinks is justified.”

That sentence defined the entire case.

Richard began as Leonard’s fixer.

Then forged a signature.

Then confined Michael.

Then followed him.

Then intercepted communications.

Then manipulated Claire.

Then married her.

Then struck Sophie.

Each line moved because the previous one had not destroyed him.

Catherine’s journals contained more.

After Flight 617, she confronted Leonard.

He told her Michael would “disappear quietly.”

She threatened to tell Claire.

Leonard threatened William’s position in the company and exposed an affair William had had years earlier.

Catherine stayed silent to protect her marriage.

Another person bought by fear.

But months later Catherine wrote:

L says Richard has gone too far. He no longer reports everything.

That mattered.

Leonard had lost control of Richard before Michael’s final disappearance.

A later entry:

R demanded additional payment. L refused. R said he has “insurance.”

Insurance could mean evidence.

Or Michael.

Claire and Reyes focused on Richard’s personal finances.

A forensic accountant found an offshore trust established four years and six months earlier.

One month after Michael’s final documented movements.

Initial deposit:

$2.8 million.

Source:

A holding company controlled by Leonard.

Memo:

Settlement services.

Was Leonard paying Richard for making Michael disappear?

Maybe.

Then another transfer appeared.

$750,000 from Richard back to a company called Vale Systems Recovery LLC.

Claire stared.

“Vale.”

Michael’s surname.

The company was incorporated in Delaware under a nominee.

Its bank account remained active for eighteen months after Michael’s official death.

Who controlled it?

Records were sealed behind an offshore services provider.

Subpoenas took time.

The delay became dangerous.

Richard’s attorneys proposed a global settlement.

He would waive claims to Claire’s property.

Resign permanently from Ashford Aviation.

Accept a plea to misdemeanor child endangerment.

In exchange, Claire and the company would not pursue certain civil claims and would support non-prosecution on older corporate conduct.

Claire laughed when Hannah read it.

“He thinks this is negotiation.”

“It is.”

“He knows what happened to Michael.”

“We need proof.”

There it was again.

Not enough.

The case had mountains of lies.

But no final answer.

Then Sophie suffered the consequence of everyone’s public war.

At school, another child showed her a video clip of Richard slapping her.

Someone had leaked the private jet footage.

Sophie came home shaking.

“I don’t want anyone seeing it.”

Claire’s heart dropped.

The footage Claire had used to prove Sophie’s truth had become another violation.

“I’m sorry.”

“Did you give it to people?”

“To investigators and lawyers.”

“Then who gave it online?”

“I don’t know.”

Sophie screamed, “Everyone knows!”

She ran upstairs and locked her door.

Claire stood in the hallway, devastated.

Elena came beside her.

“Don’t force her to open it.”

Claire almost laughed at the symbolism.

Another locked door.

This time Sophie chose it.

Claire sat on the floor outside.

“I’m here.”

No answer.

She remained there.

Twenty minutes.

Forty.

An hour.

Finally the door opened.

Sophie stood with swollen eyes.

“I hate all of this.”

“I know.”

“I hate Richard.”

Claire did not correct her.

“I hate Grandpa.”

Claire swallowed.

“I hate Dad for leaving.”

That one hurt Sophie as soon as she said it.

She began sobbing.

Claire held her.

“You’re allowed to be angry at him.”

“But I love him.”

“Both can be true.”

Sophie cried into her shoulder.

The same lesson Claire was learning.

Love did not erase harm.

Harm did not always erase love.

That night Reyes called.

They had identified the source of the leaked cabin video.

The upload originated from a media consultant retained by Richard’s legal team.

Richard had leaked evidence of his own assault.

Why?

To poison the future jury pool.

To portray the clip as old news.

And to make Sophie afraid of participating.

Claire’s anger became icy.

“He’s still using her.”

“Yes.”

“Can you charge him?”

“We’re evaluating obstruction.”

Then Reyes added:

“But we found the offshore account controller.”

Claire gripped the phone.

“Who?”

“Michael Vale.”

She stopped breathing.

“What?”

“The bank has verified identity documents and biometric records.”

Claire sat down.

“Are you telling me Michael controlled an account four years after he supposedly died?”

“Yes.”

“Then he was alive.”

“At least when the account was opened.”

Claire’s heart pounded.

“Where?”

“Switzerland.”

Hope hit again.

Then Reyes said:

“And someone withdrew the remaining balance three years ago.”

“Who?”

“We’re requesting records.”

Claire stared toward Sophie’s closed bedroom door.

May you like

Three years ago was when Richard first began courting her.

And now there was a possibility Michael had still been alive then.
