Chapter 16 - The Last Barrier

The Swiss account made final confrontation unavoidable.
Bank records arrived through formal international cooperation.
Michael opened Vale Systems Recovery LLC’s account in Geneva four years and six months earlier.
He deposited Richard’s $750,000 transfer.
Then added documents showing the money was “restitution.”
Reyes believed Richard had paid Michael to remain silent.
Claire believed there was more.
Michael made monthly withdrawals for eighteen months.
Locations moved:
Geneva.
Lyon.
Brussels.
Lisbon.
Then Toronto.
He had been alive across Europe and Canada.
Why had he not come home?
The account notes answered part of it.
One encrypted bank message from Michael to his Swiss adviser read:
Funds are evidence. Do not disclose location to Ashford interests. My daughter remains under threat.
He had still believed Sophie was in danger.
Three years earlier, the remaining $412,000 was withdrawn in Toronto.
Identity verification showed Michael himself completed the transaction.
Alive.
Three years ago.
Claire sat frozen.
That was two months before her first official date with Richard.
The timeline became unbearable.
“Richard knew,” she said.
Reyes nodded.
“Likely.”
“Michael was alive when Richard started seeing me.”
“Yes.”
Sophie could not be told until they knew more.
Claire hated keeping it from her.
But investigators insisted disclosure could leak through therapy, school or family conversations.
For once Claire distinguished secrecy from temporary protection with clear purpose and outside oversight.
Still, it felt uncomfortable.
Good.
Secrets should.
The Toronto trail led to a rental apartment under Michael’s alias.
A retired landlord remembered him.
“Quiet man. Read a lot. Had a little girl’s picture on his desk.”
Claire looked away.
“Did anyone visit?”
“One man.”
The landlord identified Richard from a photo lineup.
Richard had visited Michael in Toronto.
Three years ago.
The same month he met Claire “for the first time.”
Reyes obtained Canadian border records.
Richard had entered Toronto under his own passport for a one-day business trip.
His calendar at Ashford Aviation described the trip as a “fleet financing meeting.”
There had been no such meeting.
The confrontation between Richard and Michael was now documented.
But what happened?
The landlord remembered raised voices.
Then Richard left.
Michael remained.
Two weeks later Michael moved out voluntarily.
He gave no forwarding address.
The last barrier was location.
Then the Toronto withdrawal supplied one final clue.
Michael purchased a cashier’s check payable to Julia Bennett.
$100,000.
Julia had never mentioned it.
Confronted, she admitted receiving it.
Claire was furious.
“You hid this too?”
Julia’s face hardened.
“It was for Sophie.”
“What?”
“Michael asked me to hold it for her.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because he told me Richard was courting you.”
Claire stared.
“When?”
“Three years ago.”
Julia had known Richard was entering Claire’s life while Michael was alive.
She had tried to contact Claire once.
The message was intercepted by Richard through Claire’s assistant’s account.
Again.
Communication blocked.
Choice stolen.
“What happened to Michael?”
“I don’t know.”
Claire almost shouted.
Julia continued quickly.
“He told me he had finally made a deal with federal prosecutors.”
Reyes frowned.
“What deal?”
“Not witness protection exactly. A sealed cooperation agreement involving foreign financial records.”
That could explain continued secrecy.
Federal prosecutors searched internal archives.
They found it.
Michael had entered a confidential cooperation agreement under a protected witness number.
He provided evidence against Charles Vann and offshore financial facilitators.
The case was sealed because it expanded into unrelated international money laundering.
“Where is he?” Claire demanded.
The prosecutor hesitated.
“The protective arrangement ended two years ago.”
“Why?”
“Michael requested termination.”
“Then where did he go?”
“We don’t track former cooperating witnesses indefinitely.”
Claire nearly lost control.
“Did he know Leonard was dead?”
“Yes.”
“Did he know Richard married me?”
“Yes.”
That hurt.
“Did he know Sophie was safe?”
The prosecutor looked uncomfortable.
“He received periodic public information.”
“So he chose not to come back.”
No one answered.
The truth was becoming more complicated.
Maybe Michael had been coerced initially.
Maybe later he stayed away by choice.
Claire remembered his birthday letter.
I do not know whether that was brave or cowardly.
She finally understood.
Both.
That evening Richard requested another call.
This time Hannah approved and recorded it.
Claire answered.
“You found Toronto.”
Richard sounded tired.
“Yes.”
“He was alive when you started dating me.”
“Yes.”
“And you knew.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
A pause.
“Because Michael asked me not to tell you.”
Claire laughed in disbelief.
“Now you blame him?”
“He made a deal.”
“What deal?”
“He wanted money and distance.”
“That’s not what the records show.”
“You don’t have everything.”
“Then give me everything.”
Richard breathed slowly.
“Michael hated what your family did. Eventually he hated you too.”
Claire flinched.
Richard heard it.
“He thought you chose Leonard.”
“Did he tell you that?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“Toronto.”
“Did you threaten him?”
Silence.
“Richard.”
“I told him I was going to take care of you and Sophie.”
Claire felt cold.
“He was alive, and you told him you were going to replace him.”
“He said I’d been trying for years.”
“Was he wrong?”
Richard did not answer.
Claire’s voice dropped.
“Where is Michael?”
“I don’t know.”
“Last chance.”
“I don’t.”
Then Richard said something that changed everything.
“But I know who does.”
Claire gripped the phone.
“Who?”
“Your daughter.”
Claire went still.
“What are you talking about?”
“Sophie has been receiving letters.”
“No.”
“Yes.”
“From Michael?”
Richard laughed without humor.
“You thought that letter on the jet was the last one?”
Claire looked toward the hallway.
Sophie.
The torn letter.
The locket.
Richard continued:
“I tore it because it wasn’t five years old.”
Claire stopped breathing.
“What?”
“The letter Sophie carried onto that plane was mailed three months ago.”
Claire’s entire body went cold.
May you like
Richard whispered:
“Michael is alive.”
