Chapter 15 - The Family Dinner

Six months after the transplant, Daniel attended a family dinner at Ruth’s house.

Claire agreed to go.

Not for Eleanor.

For herself.

She was tired of avoiding family spaces as though she had caused the rupture.

Ruth seated Claire beside her.

Daniel sat on Claire’s other side.

Eleanor sat across the table.

The first twenty minutes were almost painfully polite.

Then Daniel’s cousin Andrew raised a glass.

“To Daniel and Claire.”

Claire stiffened.

Andrew continued.

“Still can’t believe what you two went through.”

Eleanor lowered her eyes.

Andrew said, “Claire, what you did—”

Claire interrupted gently.

“Can we toast the transplant team instead?”

Andrew blinked.

Then smiled.

“Fair.”

Everyone raised glasses.

“To the transplant team.”

Claire relaxed.

Dinner continued.

Then Eleanor said:

“I’ve been thinking about organizing something for the one-year anniversary.”

Daniel looked up.

“No.”

Eleanor froze.

“I was only suggesting—”

“No event.”

Claire almost smiled.

Eleanor looked at Claire automatically.

Daniel noticed.

“Claire did not tell me to say that.”

Eleanor’s jaw tightened.

“I didn’t say she did.”

“You looked at her.”

Silence.

Daniel continued calmly.

“If I disagree with you, assume it is me.”

Eleanor looked down.

“Fine.”

Later, while Daniel helped Ruth in the kitchen, Eleanor approached Claire.

“I’m trying.”

Claire nodded.

“I know.”

“That doesn’t seem to matter to you.”

Claire looked at her.

“It matters.”

Eleanor seemed surprised.

“It doesn’t give you instant closeness.”

Her face fell.

Claire continued.

“But it matters.”

Eleanor’s eyes filled.

“Do you hate me?”

Claire thought honestly.

“Sometimes.”

Eleanor flinched.

“But not all the time.”

That surprised them both.

Claire continued.

“I don’t trust you.”

“I know.”

“I don’t want you involved in private parts of our marriage.”

“I know.”

“But I don’t spend all day thinking about you anymore.”

Eleanor gave a broken laugh.

“I suppose that is progress.”

“It is for me.”

Eleanor nodded.

Then she said, “I was jealous of the kidney.”

Claire stared.

Eleanor almost smiled at how absurd it sounded.

“I know.”

“I wish I could take back that entire day.”

“You can’t.”

“I know.”

Claire looked toward Daniel.

He was laughing with Ruth.

Alive.

Color in his face.

A future.

“The kidney worked.”

Eleanor followed her gaze.

“Yes.”

“That is the part I care about.”

Eleanor’s eyes filled.

“I care too.”

Claire believed her.

That did not erase anything.

It did make Eleanor human again.

Not safe.

Not forgiven.

Human.

On the drive home, Daniel asked, “How bad was it?”

“Your mother told me she was jealous of my kidney.”

Daniel nearly drove off the road laughing.

“Sorry.”

“It was very sincere.”

“That makes it worse.”

Claire laughed too.

Then Daniel became serious.

“Thank you for coming.”

Claire looked out the window.

“I didn’t come for her.”

“I know.”

“I came because I’m done letting her decide where I feel comfortable.”

Daniel nodded.

At a red light, he took her hand.

Claire squeezed it.

The marriage was still imperfect.

They still argued.

Daniel sometimes slipped into overexplaining Eleanor.

Claire sometimes interpreted innocent things through old resentment.

But they caught themselves sooner.

Repair happened faster.

No third person was invited to referee.

May you like

That changed everything.
