Chapter 17 - The One-Year Letter

Eleven months after surgery, the transplant center mailed separate follow-up reminders.

Claire’s arrived first.

Lab work.

Blood pressure.

General health survey.

Daniel’s came two days later.

He laughed.

“Anniversary cards.”

“Very romantic.”

Claire looked at the donor questionnaire.

One question asked:

Would you make the same decision again?

Claire stared at it.

Daniel noticed.

“You don’t have to answer with me here.”

Claire looked up.

“No.”

He stood.

“I mean I can leave.”

“Daniel.”

He stopped.

“Yes.”

Claire smiled.

“Sit down.”

He did.

She checked:

YES.

Daniel’s eyes filled.

Claire continued filling out the form.

“Don’t make this weird.”

“I’m trying.”

“It was the right medical decision for me.”

“I know.”

“That does not mean everything afterward was okay.”

“I know.”

“And you still have to take out the recycling.”

Daniel laughed.

“Yes.”

At the hospital, Priya greeted them separately.

Claire completed donor testing.

Daniel completed recipient testing.

Excellent results.

One year approaching.

The kidney remained stable.

Afterward they visited the courtyard where they had first seen each other after surgery.

Daniel sat on the same bench.

Claire joined him.

“Remember this?”

“I remember thinking you looked ninety.”

“You looked worse.”

“Impossible.”

Daniel reached into his bag.

“I have something.”

Claire looked suspicious.

“No jewelry.”

“It isn’t.”

He gave her an envelope.

Inside was a letter.

Not Eleanor’s.

Daniel’s.

Claire,

A year ago, you gave me something I could never repay.

So I am not going to try.

Claire looked up.

Daniel smiled.

The kidney is not a debt.

Your staying is not payment.

Your leaving, if you ever choose it, would not erase what you did.

I spent most of my life believing love meant preventing people from leaving.

You taught me something harder.

Love means letting people be free enough that staying means something.

Claire stopped reading.

Her eyes filled.

Daniel’s did too.

The final lines:

I hope you keep choosing me.

I intend to keep becoming someone you can choose freely.

Love,

Daniel.

Claire folded the letter.

“You made me cry in a hospital.”

“Tradition.”

She leaned against him.

No vow renewal.

No public celebration.

No social-media post.

The kidney anniversary belonged to them.

Eleanor sent a text:

Thinking of both of you today. No need to respond.

Claire stared at it.

Then smiled.

“No need to respond.”

Daniel looked.

“Growth.”

Claire replied:

Thank you.

Her choice.

Not obligation.

Later, Priya walked past and saw them.

“You two still here?”

Daniel said, “Apparently.”

Priya smiled.

“Good kidney?”

“Excellent.”

Claire said, “Excuse me?”

Priya laughed.

“Excellent donor.”

“Better.”

They walked toward the parking garage.

Claire carried Daniel’s letter.

Daniel carried nothing of hers.

For once, the imbalance did not feel dangerous.

Some gifts could not be made equal.

May you like

They could only be honored without becoming chains.
