Chapter 4 - The Man Who Knew the Study Was Open

Sarah’s first mistake was calling Daniel back.
Her lawyer would later tell her she should have said nothing.
Her investigators would agree.
But at 1:13 a.m., Sarah wanted an answer more than she wanted strategy.
Daniel answered immediately.
“You suspended me.”
“I protected the company.”
“From me?”
“From whatever is happening in that penthouse.”
Sarah laughed once.
“You mean the penthouse where my husband assaulted my son?”
“That is a personal matter.”
“You made it corporate.”
“You started accessing archived records related to closed investigations.”
“How do you know what I accessed?”
Daniel hesitated.
Sarah’s anger sharpened.
“The study computer is offline.”
“Noah’s security incident triggered review.”
“That doesn’t answer me.”
Daniel said nothing.
Sarah understood.
“Someone told you the study was open.”
He exhaled.
“Richard called me.”
Sarah went still.
“When?”
“Before police took his phone.”
“From where?”
“I don’t know.”
“What did he say?”
“That you were reopening Michael’s allegations.”
Sarah looked toward Elena.
Richard had not simply panicked because Sarah would see the slap.
He had panicked because the photograph had exposed the key.
The study mattered to him and Daniel.
“Daniel, what happened to Michael?”
“Don’t do this.”
“What happened?”
“He ran.”
“That’s what you told me.”
“Because that’s what the evidence showed.”
“The evidence you gave me.”
“Sarah—”
“The account under his name was opened from our executive office while Michael was in Boston.”
Silence.
“Who was in New York that day?”
“Hundreds of employees.”
“Who had access to my executive floor?”
“Are you accusing me?”
“Yes.”
The word came out before she considered consequences.
Daniel’s voice became cold.
“You should prepare for the board meeting.”
“Answer me.”
“I spent fourteen years protecting you from bad decisions.”
Sarah almost smiled.
There it was.
Not partnership.
Ownership.
Daniel continued.
“Michael nearly destroyed this company. Now his ghost is doing it again.”
“He tried to warn me about you.”
“He hated me because you trusted me more.”
Sarah closed her eyes.
That had been true.
Daniel knew exactly where to push.
“He thought you and I were having an affair,” Daniel said.
Elena looked toward Sarah.
Sarah’s face hardened.
“We weren’t.”
“No. But Michael wanted to believe betrayal because then he didn’t have to admit your marriage was failing.”
“Richard was taking Bellwether money.”
“Legal consulting.”
“Through a private company.”
“Common.”
“Without disclosure.”
Daniel paused.
“Talk to counsel.”
“You mean Richard?”
Daniel disconnected.
Sarah threw the phone onto the desk.
Elena said quietly, “He got you angry.”
“I noticed.”
“After you accused him.”
Sarah looked at her.
“I know.”
Her tendency to confront before securing evidence had just warned Daniel exactly what she knew.
Michael had accused her of the same flaw.
She hated that even five years later he was still right about things she did not want to admit.
A knock sounded from the lobby.
Building security announced a detective.
Detective Lisa Moreno entered with a child-crimes investigator to speak with Noah and preserve the camera footage.
Sarah cooperated.
The footage was exported directly from Crown Tower’s independent security vendor and cryptographically logged.
That mattered.
Richard could later attack testimony.
He could not easily erase the video.
Noah told investigators exactly what happened.
When asked why Richard became angry, he showed them Michael’s photograph.
“He doesn’t like Dad.”
“Did Richard ever hurt you before?”
Noah looked toward Sarah.
Her chest tightened.
“Noah, tell the truth.”
He looked down.
“He grabbed my shoulder hard once.”
“When?”
“Last month.”
“Why didn’t you tell your mom?”
“Richard said she had important work.”
Sarah turned away.
The sentence devastated her.
Important work.
Deals.
Board meetings.
Flights.
She had spent years telling herself everything she built was for Noah.
Meanwhile Noah had learned her work was a reason not to bother her.
Elena touched her arm.
Sarah pulled herself together.
Detective Moreno asked Elena for a statement.
Elena told them Richard had been searching Noah’s bedroom three nights earlier.
Sarah stared.
“What?”
“I thought he was looking for a tablet.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“He said you asked him to find an insurance document.”
“What was he actually searching?”
“I don’t know. But after tonight…”
“The photograph.”
Elena nodded.
Richard had been searching for Michael’s photograph because he knew the study key might still be hidden inside.
Sarah suddenly remembered something.
Michael had always liked physical backups.
Keys inside books.
Codes hidden in photographs.
He distrusted smart locks.
“He hid the key before he disappeared.”
“Then Richard knew.”
“Yes.”
Sarah turned toward the study.
“If Richard knew about the key, he may know what’s inside the drive.”
They continued opening files.
One folder contained video clips from Crown Tower.
Not security footage.
Michael had recorded them himself.
In the first, he stood in the study five years earlier.
“If Sarah sees this, then I failed to make her listen while I was still there.”
Sarah stopped breathing.
Michael continued.
“Daniel is diverting money through Bellwether and Redmere. Richard is hiding the legal trail. I do not yet know whether they are stealing for themselves or covering something larger.”
He looked exhausted.
“I also made a mistake.”
Sarah leaned closer.
“I threatened Daniel.”
Elena glanced at her.
Michael continued.
“He knows I have evidence. That was stupid. Sarah always says I confront people too early.”
Despite everything, a painful laugh escaped her.
Michael had shared the same flaw.
The next sentence erased the smile.
“I think they’re watching Noah.”
Sarah froze.
“If anything happens to me, Sarah must not let Richard near our son.”
Noah was in the other room with investigators.
Sarah felt nauseated.
Richard had become Noah’s stepfather.
Because Sarah let him.
The video continued.
“Daniel does not know I found the Redmere ownership file.”
Michael held up a document.
“I’m putting the original somewhere he cannot access.”
The screen went black.
Elena whispered, “Where?”
Sarah scanned the room.
Then her phone rang.
Detective Moreno answered a call from downstairs.
Her expression changed.
“What?”
She turned toward Sarah.
“Richard has been released pending arraignment.”
Sarah’s jaw tightened.
Moreno continued.
“He cannot return here tonight. We’re helping you seek a temporary order of protection.”
Sarah nodded.
Then another alert appeared.
CROWN TOWER SECURITY ARCHIVE — FILE DELETION REQUEST.
Someone with a senior corporate credential was attempting to erase the five-year-old footage of Michael, Daniel and Richard.
Sarah stared at the account name.
May you like
DANIEL MERCER.
He was no longer pretending.
