Chapter 6 - The Marriage Richard Built

Sarah spent that afternoon destroying her own memories.

Not physically.

That would have been easier.

She reopened old messages.

Richard comforting her after Michael vanished.

Richard offering legal help without charging her.

Richard appearing at charity dinners where Daniel happened to be present.

Richard becoming Noah’s “safe adult.”

Richard telling Sarah she deserved someone dependable.

Each memory now had another possible explanation.

Access.

Richard had entered her life because access to Sarah meant access to the penthouse.

To company information.

To Noah.

To Michael’s study.

Elena sat opposite her.

“When did Richard first ask about the study?”

Sarah thought.

“Before we were engaged.”

“What did he say?”

“That leaving Michael’s things sealed inside the apartment wasn’t emotionally healthy.”

Elena raised an eyebrow.

“He wanted you to open it.”

“Yes.”

“And when you refused?”

“He suggested changing the lock.”

“Which could have given him a new key.”

Sarah closed her eyes.

She had interpreted his suggestion as concern.

Richard had tested the door.

Noah wandered in carrying a book.

“Can Dad come home if we prove he didn’t steal?”

Sarah felt the question in her chest.

“I don’t know where he is.”

“Find him.”

“I’m trying.”

“You stopped trying before.”

Silence.

Elena looked away.

Noah was not being cruel.

Children rarely needed elaborate language to identify adult failures.

Sarah crouched beside him.

“You’re right.”

“Why did you stop?”

“Because people showed me evidence that made me think he chose to leave.”

“But you didn’t ask him.”

“He was already gone.”

“You could’ve kept looking.”

Sarah swallowed.

“Yes.”

Noah nodded once and returned to his room.

Elena said softly, “He trusts you enough to be angry.”

“That doesn’t make it easier.”

“No.”

Sarah’s private investigator, former federal agent Marcus Bell, arrived before evening.

Amanda Cho had recommended him.

Unlike company security, he had no connection to Daniel.

Marcus reviewed the Michael files.

“What exactly happened when Grant disappeared?”

Sarah answered carefully.

“Michael and I divorced five years and two months ago. Three weeks later, he failed to pick Noah up for his weekend.”

“Phone?”

“Disconnected.”

“Apartment?”

“Mostly cleared.”

“Passport?”

“Missing.”

“Bank activity?”

“Withdrawals from the accounts we believed were fraudulent.”

“Police?”

“They found no evidence of violence.”

“Who provided the financial records?”

Sarah already knew the answer would hurt.

“Daniel and Richard’s firm.”

Marcus leaned back.

“So the two men your missing ex-husband accused of stealing supplied the records that convinced everyone he fled.”

“Yes.”

“That was convenient.”

Sarah looked at him.

“Can you find him?”

“I can find the trail. Whether it ends with a living person is something else.”

Noah heard the final sentence from the hallway.

Sarah saw his face.

Marcus immediately softened.

“I’m going to look carefully.”

Noah nodded.

After he left, Sarah opened the remaining flash-drive files.

One contained a voice recording.

Michael.

Another man.

Richard.

The date was two days before Michael disappeared.

MICHAEL: I know Redmere is yours.

RICHARD: Then you know enough to understand why you should leave it alone.

MICHAEL: Daniel is using Sarah’s signatures to move money.

RICHARD: Sarah signs because Sarah wants deals closed.

MICHAEL: That doesn’t give you permission to steal.

RICHARD: You think this is about theft?

A pause.

MICHAEL: What is it about?

RICHARD: Survival.

Michael laughed.

MICHAEL: Rich men always call it survival.

Richard’s voice lowered.

RICHARD: Daniel pledged half his equity to cover personal guarantees. If the market finds out, lenders pull facilities. Projects collapse. Hundreds lose jobs.

MICHAEL: So you stole thirty million dollars.

RICHARD: We moved liquidity.

MICHAEL: Into your company?

Silence.

Then:

RICHARD: You have a son.

Sarah stopped the recording.

Elena stared at her.

“That was a threat.”

“Yes.”

Sarah played the rest.

MICHAEL: If you ever go near Noah—

RICHARD: Then stop digging.

MICHAEL: I already sent copies.

RICHARD: To Sarah?

MICHAEL: Somewhere safer.

The recording ended.

Sarah’s hands shook.

Richard had threatened Noah before marrying her.

And five years later, he had struck the same child while trying to recover the photograph containing the study key.

Marcus called.

“I found something.”

Sarah put him on speaker.

“Michael’s passport was never scanned leaving the United States.”

She went still.

“The original investigation said he flew to Lisbon.”

“A ticket was purchased in his name.”

“Yes.”

“He never boarded.”

Sarah stood.

“Then where did he go?”

“I don’t know yet. But someone used his credit card at JFK to make it look like he did.”

“Who?”

“We’ll need records.”

Sarah looked toward Michael’s study.

For five years, she had imagined her ex-husband beginning a new life in Europe.

Now she knew he had never taken the flight.

Then Marcus added:

“And Sarah? The card was used forty-three minutes after Crown Tower cameras show Michael entering Daniel Mercer’s car.”
