Chapter 2 - The Woman Behind the Wall

Damian caught Celeste before she reached the corridor.

He seized the back of her robe.

“Where are you going?”

“Let me go!”

“Security!”

His voice thundered through the yacht.

Two crew members appeared.

“Lock the bridge access. Nobody leaves this vessel. Find Captain Mercer.”

Celeste fought him.

“You’re making a mistake!”

“My missing wife is inside a wall!”

Lucas was already at the opening.

“Mom!”

Damian released Celeste to security and rushed back.

The service compartment was barely four feet wide.

Elena lay curled behind pipes and wiring, wearing gray sweatpants and a dark sweatshirt. Her hair, once long and auburn, had been cut unevenly above her shoulders.

She looked dangerously thin.

But alive.

Damian crawled inside.

For eighteen months he had imagined seeing her again thousands of ways.

Walking through a door.

Calling from another country.

Being found in a hospital.

Never like this.

“Elena.”

Her eyes opened fully.

They were the same green eyes he remembered.

Older now.

Exhausted.

Terrified.

“Lucas?”

“He’s here.”

Lucas squeezed through the gap.

Damian stopped him.

“Careful.”

Elena saw her son.

Something inside her broke.

“Oh, baby.”

Lucas crawled into her arms.

“Mom!”

She tried to sit up but gasped.

Damian caught her.

“What happened?”

Elena’s eyes moved toward the open cabin.

“Celeste.”

Security officer Jonah Reed stepped inside.

“Mr. Vale, Ms. Arden is contained in the main salon.”

“Call the Coast Guard.”

The captain appeared behind him.

“Sir, satellite communications are unstable.”

“Use emergency channels.”

“We’re sixty-two nautical miles southeast of Nantucket. The storm is interfering—”

“Keep trying.”

Damian looked at Elena.

“How long have you been in here?”

“Hours.”

Relief and confusion collided inside him.

Hours.

Not eighteen months.

“Where were you before?”

Elena looked at Celeste’s abandoned curling iron.

Her breathing accelerated.

“Not here.”

Damian touched her shoulder.

“You’re safe.”

She stared at him with a terrible sadness.

“No, Damian.”

“What?”

“You still think this is Celeste.”

His stomach tightened.

“Isn’t it?”

Elena looked toward the ceiling.

“Who owns this yacht?”

“You know I do.”

“No.”

She shook her head weakly.

“Who owns it now?”

Damian frowned.

“The vessel is held by Vale Maritime Holdings.”

Elena closed her eyes.

“That’s what they wanted.”

“Who?”

Before she could answer, the yacht rolled violently.

An alarm sounded from the bridge.

Jonah’s radio crackled.

“Engine-room alert. Port generator offline.”

Damian stood.

“Stay with them.”

He turned toward Lucas.

“Do not leave your mother.”

Lucas nodded fiercely.

Damian followed Jonah into the corridor.

Celeste sat guarded in the salon.

Her wrists had not been restrained. Damian’s security team was private, not law enforcement.

She looked up.

“You found her.”

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

Celeste laughed softly.

“Wrong question.”

Damian stepped toward her.

Jonah moved between them.

“Sir.”

Damian stopped.

Celeste smiled.

“See? Still impulsive.”

“You held my son against a hot iron.”

“And you hit me in front of witnesses.”

Damian understood immediately.

She was already building her defense.

“Where was Elena?”

Celeste said nothing.

“Who brought her aboard?”

Nothing.

“What were you trying to get from Lucas?”

“The card.”

“What’s on it?”

Her eyes dropped to his hand.

He still held the memory card.

Damian closed his fist.

Celeste’s voice softened.

“Damian, listen to me. If you play that without understanding what Elena was doing eighteen months ago, you could lose everything.”

“My wife disappeared.”

“Your wife was investigating you.”

He stared.

“She believed you were stealing from Vale Oceanic.”

“That’s absurd.”

“She believed somebody was.”

Damian’s family company, Vale Oceanic Group, controlled container terminals, yacht manufacturing, and offshore wind-service vessels along the East Coast.

Damian owned thirty-eight percent.

His older cousin Adrian Vale controlled twenty-one.

A family trust held another seventeen for Lucas.

Celeste continued.

“Elena found hidden transfers.”

“From whom?”

“She thought they came from your authorization.”

Damian laughed.

“She would have confronted me.”

“She tried.”

“When?”

“The night she disappeared.”

Damian stopped.

He had spent that night at a Vale Oceanic acquisition dinner in Newport.

Elena had called twice.

He had ignored both calls because they had argued that morning.

A mistake he had replayed for eighteen months.

Celeste leaned forward.

“You didn’t answer.”

His jaw tightened.

“So she called someone else.”

“Who?”

Celeste smiled.

“Play the card.”

Damian turned to Jonah.

“Get me an offline laptop.”

“No internet?”

“No network connection.”

Celeste’s smile disappeared.

That confirmed the decision.

Ten minutes later, Damian sat beside Elena in the dressing cabin.

Lucas remained pressed against her.

Damian inserted the memory card.

There were nine video files.

The first showed Lucas’s toy speedboat sitting beneath a table eighteen months earlier.

The camera angle was low.

A door opened.

Elena’s voice said, “You transferred forty-eight million dollars through Harbor Meridian.”

A man answered.

Damian froze.

He knew that voice.

Adrian Vale.

His cousin.

His closest friend since childhood.

The man currently serving as Vale Oceanic’s chief financial officer.

Adrian replied, “Lower your voice.”

Elena said, “Damian deserves to know.”

Then another voice entered the recording.

Celeste.

“No, Elena. Damian deserves to sign what we put in front of him.”

Damian looked at his wife.

She whispered, “Keep watching.”

On screen, Adrian stepped into view.

Celeste followed.

And Adrian kissed her.

Not affectionately.

Intimately.

Familiar.

Damian’s face became still.

Celeste had been sleeping with Adrian eighteen months before she became Damian’s fiancée.

Elena said from behind the camera, “So that’s the arrangement.”

Adrian turned.

“You shouldn’t have come here.”

The file ended.

Damian clicked the next.

The timestamp was fourteen minutes later.

Celeste’s voice came first.

“Take her phone.”

May you like

Then Adrian said something that turned Damian’s blood to ice.

“Once Elena is gone, Damian will sign anything.”
