Chapter 3 - Eighteen Months Missing

Elena was taken by Coast Guard helicopter shortly after dawn.
The storm had weakened enough for the extraction.
Lucas refused to leave her.
Damian went too.
Celeste remained aboard the Aurelia under watch until federal and state authorities could coordinate jurisdiction.
Because the disappearance originated near Rhode Island, the kidnapping apparently crossed several states, and the yacht was now in federal waters, the investigation immediately became complicated.
At Massachusetts General Hospital, doctors treated Elena for dehydration, malnutrition, an untreated wrist fracture, and multiple older injuries.
Damian sat outside her room with Lucas asleep across his lap.
Special Agent Rebecca Shaw of the FBI approached.
“Mr. Vale?”
Damian stood carefully.
“Is Elena talking?”
“Some.”
“Has Celeste been arrested?”
“Local authorities are holding her while we establish the appropriate charges and jurisdiction.”
“She kidnapped my wife.”
“We’re investigating.”
“I saw the recording.”
“We have the memory card.”
“Then what is there to investigate?”
Shaw did not react.
“Evidence must be authenticated. We need chain of custody. We need to know who recorded it, whether files were altered, and what happened after those clips.”
Damian looked through the glass at Elena.
“She’s alive.”
“Yes.”
“After eighteen months.”
“Yes.”
“And you’re telling me paperwork matters?”
“I’m telling you paperwork is how we keep the people who did this from walking away.”
That silenced him.
Elena woke two hours later.
Damian entered alone.
She studied him.
“You look terrible.”
He almost laughed.
“So do you.”
“Charming.”
For a moment they sounded like themselves.
Then eighteen months returned.
Damian sat.
“I thought you were dead.”
“I know.”
“I stopped searching after eleven months.”
“I know.”
His eyes filled.
“I’m sorry.”
Elena looked away.
“You had Lucas.”
“That isn’t an excuse.”
“No.”
The blunt answer hurt.
He deserved it.
“Where were you?”
“A house outside Baltimore first.”
“Whose?”
“I never knew. Windows covered. Two rooms. Someone brought food.”
“Celeste?”
“Sometimes.”
“Adrian?”
“Twice.”
Damian’s fists tightened.
Elena noticed.
“Don’t.”
“What?”
“Do what you always do.”
He stared.
“Turn anger into action before you know where the floor is.”
Damian heard Celeste’s earlier accusation echoing through that.
Impulsive.
Easy to provoke.
He forced his hands open.
Elena continued.
“After six months they moved me to an apartment near Norfolk.”
“Why keep you alive?”
“Because they needed my signatures.”
His stomach dropped.
“For what?”
“Trust amendments. Spousal consents. Property transfers.”
“I never received anything from you.”
“They weren’t for you.”
“Then who?”
“Banks. Trustees. Foreign registries.”
Damian leaned closer.
“Foreign?”
Elena nodded.
“Cayman Islands. Malta. The Marshall Islands.”
Vale Oceanic owned international shipping assets through entities in multiple jurisdictions.
That by itself was normal.
But forged spousal documents were not.
“What did you sign?”
“Almost nothing.”
“Almost?”
“They threatened Lucas.”
Damian went still.
Elena’s voice cracked.
“They showed me photographs of him sleeping.”
He looked toward the hallway where their son slept.
Elena whispered, “I signed three documents.”
“What were they?”
“One authorized release of my objections to the Newport terminal refinancing. One dealt with the family trust.”
“Lucas’s trust?”
“Yes.”
Damian stood.
“What did they change?”
“I don’t know. They never let me read the full document.”
“And the third?”
“A marital-property acknowledgment.”
“What did it say?”
“That I had voluntarily abandoned the marriage and waived certain rights.”
Damian felt sick.
Celeste had begun dating him months after Elena disappeared.
If Elena was legally alive, Damian could not marry Celeste.
But if documents had been prepared to show abandonment and future death presumptions—
“They were building a legal path around you,” Elena said.
Damian sat again.
“Why were you on the yacht last night?”
“They moved me two days ago.”
“From Norfolk?”
She nodded.
“I heard them say the ‘closing’ was Sunday.”
“What closing?”
“I don’t know.”
“And the wall?”
“Celeste said she only needed to keep me hidden until we reached international waters.”
Damian stared.
The Aurelia had departed Newport for Bermuda.
The storm forced them east.
Without the storm, they would have reached open Atlantic routes.
“Why bring you at all?”
Elena looked at him.
“Because someone needed me to sign one final document.”
“Who?”
She hesitated.
“Adrian.”
Damian stood.
His cousin was in New York preparing the Monday board meeting where Vale Oceanic was expected to vote on a $1.4 billion asset restructuring.
Damian had planned to join remotely from Bermuda.
Elena grabbed his wrist.
“Don’t call him.”
Damian looked down.
“He thinks you’re dead.”
“No.”
Her expression chilled him.
“He knows Celeste failed.”
“How?”
“Because before they put me in the wall, she called him.”
Damian felt the trap closing.
“What did he say?”
Elena swallowed.
“He said if Lucas found the camera, Celeste had to destroy it.”
“And if she couldn’t?”
May you like
Elena looked toward the sleeping child beyond the glass.
“He told her to make sure neither of you reached Monday.”
