Chapter 5 - Damian’s Signature

The document looked authentic.
Damian’s name appeared on page forty-three of the Seaboard Consolidation Agreement.
Damian Vale
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
Vale Oceanic Group
His electronic certificate was valid.
Timestamp: Friday, 11:17 p.m.
Damian had been asleep beside Lucas at that time.
Celeste had told him she was reading in the yacht salon.
“I never signed this.”
Vale Oceanic’s outside counsel, Martin Keene, sounded cautious on the secure video call.
“The certificate came from your registered device.”
“My fiancée had access to it.”
“That presents a problem.”
“It presents fraud.”
“Possibly.”
Damian slammed his palm on the conference table.
Elena flinched.
He saw it.
That hurt more than anything Martin had said.
Damian lowered his voice.
“Sorry.”
Martin continued.
“The board currently believes you approved the transaction.”
“Then tell them I didn’t.”
“As your counsel, I need to verify that independently.”
“You think I’m lying?”
“I think we are dealing with a contested multibillion-dollar transaction, an alleged kidnapping, a compromised executive device, and your fiancée under criminal investigation.”
Damian stared at the screen.
Martin added, “I will not make a statement until I know what I can prove.”
After the call, Elena said quietly, “He’s right.”
“Everyone keeps saying that today.”
“Maybe listen occasionally.”
Damian almost smiled.
Almost.
Special Agent Shaw returned with worse news.
Celeste’s attorneys had filed an emergency complaint through local counsel.
“She alleges you assaulted her aboard the yacht.”
“I did.”
Elena looked at him sharply.
Damian did not hide.
“I struck her twice.”
“You what?”
“She was holding a burning curling iron near Lucas’s face.”
Elena’s anger rose.
“And you hit her?”
“Yes.”
“In front of Lucas?”
“Yes.”
“Damian.”
“I know.”
He hated the disappointment in her voice.
Shaw said, “Celeste’s conduct does not legally erase yours.”
“I know.”
“She’s also claiming you unlawfully confined her aboard the vessel.”
“My security team prevented her from leaving before authorities arrived.”
“That is likely defensible under the circumstances, but her attorneys are building a narrative.”
Elena asked, “What narrative?”
“That Damian is violent, controlling, unstable after your disappearance, and manipulating Lucas.”
Damian laughed bitterly.
“Of course.”
Shaw continued.
“They’re also suggesting the woman recovered aboard the Aurelia may have voluntarily left the marriage and later returned as part of a financial dispute.”
Elena stared.
“I was imprisoned.”
“I know.”
“Doctors saw my injuries.”
“Yes.”
“Then how can they say that?”
“They can say almost anything publicly. Proving it is different.”
Damian stood at the window.
His phone rang.
Adrian.
Everyone froze.
Shaw held up one finger.
“Answer. Normal tone.”
Damian accepted.
“Adrian.”
“Thank God.”
Adrian sounded genuinely worried.
“I just heard about Elena.”
Damian looked at his wife.
“Did you?”
“Yes. Is it true?”
“You tell me.”
Silence.
“What does that mean?”
“Lucas says he saw you aboard the Aurelia.”
A longer silence.
Elena closed her eyes.
Shaw mouthed: Too much.
Damian knew.
Again.
His anger had outrun strategy.
Adrian sighed.
“Damian, listen carefully. Celeste called me from the yacht last night.”
“Why?”
“She said you were losing control.”
Damian’s jaw tightened.
“She was threatening my son.”
“I wasn’t there.”
“Lucas saw you.”
“Lucas is six.”
Damian nearly shouted.
Elena shook her head.
He forced himself to stop.
Adrian continued.
“You need to step back from the company until this is resolved.”
“There it is.”
“What?”
“You want Monday.”
“The board wants stability.”
“You forged my signature.”
Adrian’s voice became cold.
“Be very careful what you accuse me of.”
“You’re Harbor Meridian.”
Silence.
Then Adrian laughed softly.
“Where did you hear that?”
Damian realized his mistake instantly.
Elena’s eyes closed.
Shaw looked furious.
Adrian said, “You always were terrible at poker.”
The call ended.
Damian put down the phone.
Elena stared at him.
“You just told him what we know.”
“I know.”
“No, Damian. Do you?”
Her voice shook.
“For eighteen months, I survived because they never knew exactly what evidence I hid.”
He said nothing.
“Now Adrian knows about Harbor Meridian.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Sorry does not put secrets back in the dark.”
Lucas stood near the doorway again.
He had heard.
Damian saw fear in his face.
Not fear of Celeste.
Fear of his father’s anger.
Damian crouched.
“Lucas.”
The boy backed up half a step.
That tiny movement devastated him.
“I won’t shout.”
Lucas looked at him.
“Promise?”
“Yes.”
“Mom said yelling makes people tell you things before you’re ready to hear them.”
Damian glanced at Elena.
She looked away.
Lucas held up the red toy speedboat.
“I found something else.”
He opened the hidden compartment.
Beneath where the memory card had been was a folded strip of waterproof paper.
Damian unfolded it.
Elena’s handwriting.
If I disappear, do not trust the board vote. Find Pier 19, Locker 214.
Damian looked at her.
Elena whispered, “I forgot I put that there.”
Shaw asked, “Where is Pier 19?”
May you like
Damian knew immediately.
“Vale Oceanic’s private Newport terminal.”
