Chapter 10 - Lake Wren

Police found Gordon Pike before Victor.
He was hiding in a motel outside Albany with thirty thousand dollars in cash.
Victor remained missing.
Gordon agreed to talk after prosecutors explained the evidence against him.
He had guarded Caleb for four years.
He claimed he never physically abused him.
Caleb later confirmed that Gordon rarely hit him.
Instead, Gordon controlled food.
Doors.
Phone access.
Information.
“He said the world outside was dangerous,” Caleb told the child therapist.
Fear had been the cage.
Gordon admitted Victor paid him personally after Edmund died.
That was crucial.
Victor could no longer claim he was only following their father’s orders.
Edmund died two years earlier.
Victor continued hiding Caleb voluntarily.
“Why?” investigators asked.
Gordon shrugged.
“Shares.”
Twelve percent.
Control.
Again.
But then Gordon revealed why Caleb had suddenly appeared at Grand Terminal.
Victor intended to move him out of the United States.
A private rail connection would take him into Canada under false identification.
From there, an associate would move him to Europe.
Caleb escaped the plan because Victor hesitated.
Daniel frowned when Jonathan told him.
“Hesitated?”
“According to Gordon, Victor changed his mind at the terminal.”
Daniel remembered Caleb’s words.
The man who left me here gave me the token.
Victor had not accidentally abandoned him.
He had deliberately left Caleb where Daniel traveled every Monday morning with Sophie.
Victor knew their schedule.
“He wanted me to find him.”
Jonathan said, “Possibly.”
“Then why run?”
“Because returning Caleb doesn’t erase kidnapping.”
Daniel thought of the token.
The archive box.
The Polaroid.
Victor had given Caleb the key that exposed himself.
Not a mistake.
A confession without surrender.
“He wanted the truth found.”
“Maybe.”
Daniel looked at Jonathan.
“You really love that word.”
“It keeps people out of prison for accusing the wrong person.”
The Lake Wren cabin produced more evidence.
A locked office contained correspondence between Victor and Edmund.
At first Victor begged their father to return Caleb.
Rebecca is breaking. Daniel is not functioning. This has gone too far.
Edmund answered:
You want the company or you want sentiment. Choose.
Months later Victor’s tone changed.
The succession transfer is complete. Reversing this now destroys all of us.
The moral collapse had happened on paper.
First obedience.
Then fear.
Then benefit.
Then active conspiracy.
Daniel read every message.
It would have been easier if Victor had been evil from the beginning.
Instead, he had made one cowardly choice and spent six years committing worse acts to protect it.
Jonathan found another file.
A draft confession dated two weeks earlier.
Victor wrote:
I cannot keep the boy hidden. Edmund is dead. Rebecca is dead. Daniel still leaves Caleb’s photograph in his wallet.
Daniel’s throat closed.
Victor knew.
He had seen Daniel carry that photograph for six years.
The confession continued:
If I return Caleb, I lose the railway and likely my freedom. If I do not, then Father won twice.
Daniel stared.
Victor had finally brought Caleb back because he could no longer live inside Edmund’s decision.
But remorse did not make him innocent.
Then police located Victor’s car.
Abandoned near the Hudson.
Daniel’s first thought was suicide.
Jonathan immediately said, “Do not assume.”
No body.
No note.
No confirmed sighting.
The investigation expanded.
That night Caleb asked:
“Is Victor dead?”
“We don’t know.”
“He left me at the station.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Daniel sat beside him.
“I think he wanted me to find you.”
Caleb looked confused.
“Then why did he steal me?”
Daniel answered carefully.
“Because people can do terrible things and regret them later.”
“Does regret fix it?”
“No.”
Caleb nodded.
“Good.”
The next morning Grace called.
She had reviewed an old maintenance access log from the abandoned Hudson rail spur.
Victor’s company badge had been used at 2:17 a.m.
Victor had not disappeared into the river.
He had gone underground.
May you like
Into Ashford Rail’s oldest private tunnel.
And that tunnel led directly to the sealed North Harbor records facility Rebecca had been investigating before Caleb vanished.
