Chapter 12 - The Woman Who Came Back at Night

James had installed a backup wildlife camera outside the service entrance after the first break-in concerns.
It captured a vehicle at 2:11 a.m.
Victoria’s SUV.
Claire stared at the image.
Her mother had returned.
Another frame showed Victoria carrying the red file box.
Then a second person emerged from the passenger side.
Marcus Vale.
The lender.
Laura leaned forward.
“Why is he helping her?”
The answer arrived through financial records.
Victoria owed Marcus personally.
Not through Summit Crest.
Two years earlier Marcus had lent her $2.8 million against her future Blackpine trust income.
The VHM loan had partly refinanced it.
Victoria had been juggling debt between Adrian and Marcus.
Now both men had leverage.
Claire called Marcus’s attorney.
Within an hour Marcus agreed to speak.
He insisted he entered Blackpine only because Victoria said the documents belonged to her.
“Why take security evidence?” Claire asked.
“I didn’t know what was in the box.”
“Where is it?”
“I don’t have it.”
“Victoria?”
“Yes.”
“Where is she?”
“I dropped her at Denver Union Station.”
Claire stared.
“She took a train?”
“She said she needed to disappear for two days.”
“From whom?”
“Adrian.”
That surprised Claire.
“Why?”
Marcus hesitated.
“She thinks he is going to blame her for the child issue.”
He was.
“What did she want from you?”
“Money.”
“How much?”
“Five hundred thousand.”
“For what?”
“To settle somewhere else if Summit Crest collapsed.”
Claire closed her eyes.
Victoria was not trying to save the family anymore.
She was trying to escape it.
Then Marcus added:
“She had another document.”
“What?”
“A handwritten letter from Robert.”
Claire froze.
“Not the ledger page?”
“No. A letter.”
“To whom?”
“I didn’t see.”
James searched Robert’s old correspondence archive.
One envelope was missing from the inventory Claire had inherited.
Addressed to Victoria.
Never found after Robert’s death.
Claire realized Victoria had likely kept it for years.
Why hide a private letter?
At 4:30 p.m. Victoria called.
Her voice sounded tired.
“I want immunity.”
Claire almost laughed.
“From me?”
“From the family.”
“You stole evidence.”
“I took documents that could destroy me.”
“You mean evidence.”
Silence.
“Where are you?”
“No.”
“What did Dad’s letter say?”
Victoria breathed slowly.
“He knew.”
“Knew what?”
“About Adrian and me.”
Claire’s stomach tightened.
“What about you and Adrian?”
“Not an affair.”
The answer came quickly.
“Then what?”
“Silver Crown.”
Claire waited.
Victoria explained.
Six years earlier Adrian wanted initial funding to conduct private due diligence on Silver Crown before presenting it to Robert.
Robert refused.
Victoria secretly advanced Adrian $900,000 from money held in a family investment account.
Adrian used it to commission projections.
When Robert discovered it, he was furious.
“He said I had chosen Adrian’s ambition over the trust.”
“You had.”
“I thought Robert was suffocating the company.”
“What did he write?”
Victoria’s voice cracked.
“He told me if I ever helped Adrian use Claire or Emma to gain trust control, I should remember that I was not protecting family.”
Claire stopped breathing.
“What else?”
Victoria whispered:
“He wrote, ‘You will be feeding your fear until it eats the child.’”
Claire looked toward Emma’s pale-blue lunchbox sitting on the counter.
Robert had written metaphorically.
Years later Victoria had literally withheld food from Emma because of fear.
Claire closed her eyes.
“Where is the letter?”
“Safe.”
“Where?”
“I’ll give it to you if you agree not to pursue civil claims against me.”
“No.”
“Claire—”
“No deals involving truth.”
Victoria’s voice sharpened.
“You sound like him.”
“Good.”
“No. You don’t understand what he did to me.”
“Then tell me.”
Silence.
“You always choose the dead.”
Victoria disconnected.
Laura immediately began trying to trace the call.
Claire sat quietly.
Emma entered.
“Was that Grandma?”
“Yes.”
“Is she coming back?”
“I don’t know.”
Emma thought.
“Can she eat when she’s gone?”
Claire looked at her daughter.
“Yes.”
Emma nodded.
“Good.”
It was such a simple mercy.
The kind Victoria had denied her.
Then Claire realized something.
Victoria might be hiding.
May you like
But she was also carrying the only surviving document showing Robert had predicted exactly what would happen if fear controlled the family.
And Adrian had every incentive to find her before Claire did.
