Chapter 17 - The Fall of Project Glacier

The Summit Crest boardroom overlooked three mountains Adrian had once called his kingdom.

At nine, he entered without looking at Claire.

Victoria attended by video through counsel.

Samuel Reese sat beside Blackwell’s restructuring team.

Paul Barrett had resigned as CFO but appeared as a cooperating witness.

Three independent directors waited.

A lender representative joined remotely.

Claire placed Robert’s final ledger page on the table.

Adrian’s attorney began.

“Mr. Mercer acknowledges reporting failures but maintains Project Glacier remains the least destructive path.”

Blackwell disagreed.

Their analysis showed Glacier required more debt, optimistic Silver Crown performance and use of Blackpine-linked assets.

Sale of Silver Crown plus Timber Ridge Hotel would reduce debt by approximately $54 million.

Additional cash contributions and pension restructuring could stabilize Summit Crest.

Painful.

Survivable.

Adrian argued.

“You’re selling growth assets at the bottom.”

Blackwell partner Elaine Foster replied, “They are only growth assets if their projections are credible.”

She displayed the inflated occupancy reports.

Adrian’s face hardened.

“Those were forecasts.”

“They were presented as operating performance.”

Silence.

Paul testified.

He admitted signing inaccurate summaries.

He described Adrian’s pressure.

Then Claire played Victoria’s recordings.

Adrian’s own voice filled the boardroom.

“Custody would put pressure on her.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

One director whispered, “Jesus.”

Then Robert’s recording played.

You do not get to decide what my daughter would have signed.

Adrian stared at the table.

When it ended, Claire spoke.

“I am not asking this board to remove Adrian because he betrayed me as a husband.”

She looked around.

“I’m asking you to decide whether someone who hid debt, manipulated projections, diverted company funds and attempted to obtain trust authority through family pressure should remain CEO.”

Adrian finally looked at her.

“You benefited from everything I built.”

Claire nodded.

“Yes.”

The answer surprised him.

“I benefited from good decisions you made.”

She paused.

“And now I’m living with the consequences of the bad ones.”

She did not erase his achievements.

That made the accusation stronger.

Adrian stood.

“Silver Crown could still work.”

Claire looked at him sadly.

“This stopped being about Silver Crown years ago.”

“No.”

“It’s about proving my father wrong.”

His face changed.

Several directors looked between them.

Adrian whispered, “He never gave me a chance.”

“He gave you a warning.”

“He controlled everything.”

“And you became exactly what you hated.”

Silence.

The vote came.

Five to one.

Adrian was removed as CEO.

He retained whatever economic rights his employment and ownership documents provided, subject to claims.

But operational control ended immediately.

Blackwell assumed interim management.

Project Glacier was terminated.

Silver Crown was placed for sale.

Victoria’s guaranteed interests were exposed.

The mountains outside remained exactly where they were.

Only Adrian’s authority disappeared.

Afterward he stood alone near the windows.

Claire approached.

“I’m sorry.”

He laughed bitterly.

“For what?”

“That it ended this way.”

“You did this.”

There it was.

The blame.

Exactly as Robert predicted.

Claire waited.

Adrian realized it too.

His face collapsed.

“No.”

“What?”

He covered his mouth.

“No. I did.”

Claire said nothing.

It was the first time Adrian corrected himself before someone else did.

He sat.

“I thought if Silver Crown succeeded, none of the lies would matter.”

“That’s how hidden debt works too.”

He laughed through tears.

“Your father would enjoy this.”

“No.”

Claire shook her head.

“He would hate what it cost Emma.”

That silenced him.

Then Laura entered.

“Claire.”

Her face was serious.

“Victoria has agreed to give a full statement.”

“To police?”

“And investigators.”

“Why?”

“She heard the board vote.”

Claire looked toward Victoria’s dark video screen.

Her mother had lost the future she had abused a child to protect.

Now perhaps there was nothing left worth hiding.

But Victoria’s statement would reveal one final piece.

Who first suggested using Emma’s custody as leverage.

And Claire did not yet know whether the answer was Adrian.

Or Victoria.
