Chapter 13 - The Serious Setback

Monday arrived.
Blackwell formally recommended selling Silver Crown.
The board voted.
Adrian lost.
Five to two.
He remained a director but was suspended from executive authority pending investigation.
Claire expected relief.
Instead Summit Crest’s primary lender issued a default notice.
The disclosed pension gap and related-party transfers triggered covenants Adrian had concealed.
The company had thirty days to restructure.
Otherwise the lender could accelerate $63 million in obligations.
Claire stared at the notice.
“Sixty-three?”
Paul nodded.
“Cross-default provisions.”
The true crisis was larger than anyone admitted.
Blackwell began emergency negotiations.
Then the custody matter exploded again.
Adrian withdrew his own petition as promised.
But Victoria filed a grandparent-access and emergency welfare petition through new counsel.
She claimed Claire had isolated Emma from family and was manipulating the child against her.
Attached were photographs of Victoria’s bruised cheek after Claire struck her at breakfast.
And one video.
Claire yelling:
“If you touch her again, I will make sure you never see this family.”
Claire remembered saying it.
Another real mistake.
Laura rubbed her forehead.
“She has no easy path to custody over a fit parent. But she can make this ugly.”
“She hit Emma.”
“We have evidence.”
“She starved her.”
“We have evidence.”
“Then why file?”
“Leverage.”
The word had become poison.
Victoria wanted Claire to release financial claims and perhaps protect her trust income.
Then something worse happened.
James called.
“Emma is missing.”
Claire stopped breathing.
“What?”
“She was with her ski instructor. They came inside at noon. I went to the equipment room. Five minutes later she was gone.”
Claire screamed Adrian’s name into the phone before thinking.
Laura grabbed her arm.
“Call police.”
Claire did.
Blackpine locked down.
Cameras were reviewed.
Emma had walked willingly out the east entrance with a woman in a red coat.
Victoria.
Claire nearly collapsed.
“She took her.”
James rewound footage.
Emma did not struggle.
Victoria knelt and said something.
Emma took her hand.
A vehicle waited beyond the snowbank.
Police issued an alert.
Claire called Victoria.
No answer.
Adrian called Claire.
“I heard.”
“You did this.”
“No.”
“You said you didn’t know where she was.”
“I don’t.”
“If Emma is hurt—”
“Claire, stop.”
His voice cracked.
For the first time he sounded genuinely terrified.
“I did not take our daughter.”
Laura motioned for Claire to end the call.
Police traced Victoria’s phone.
Off.
Marcus Vale cooperated.
He had not seen her.
At 2:40 p.m., a ranger spotted Victoria’s SUV near a private mountain airstrip.
Claire’s knees weakened.
An aircraft had departed thirty minutes earlier.
Destination initially unknown.
Then a charter company confirmed.
Bozeman, Montana.
Victoria had taken Emma across state lines.
No custody order.
No parental consent.
The FBI was contacted because interstate movement complicated the situation.
Claire sat in the lodge command room staring at the empty pale-blue lunchbox.
Adrian arrived under police supervision.
Claire stood.
“Get out.”
“Emma is my daughter.”
“You taught everyone that children are leverage.”
His face collapsed.
“You think I don’t know that?”
“No.”
“I do now.”
Claire turned away.
Then an officer entered.
“We have contact.”
Claire spun around.
“Emma?”
“Victoria.”
A video call appeared on a secured police laptop.
Victoria’s face filled the screen.
Emma was visible behind her in a hotel room.
Safe.
Holding Jasper.
Claire almost sobbed.
“Emma!”
“Mom!”
Victoria blocked the camera.
“She’s fine.”
Claire’s voice became deadly.
“You bring her back.”
“Sign the release.”
There it was.
A document arrived by email.
Claire would release Victoria from financial claims, preserve her trust income and support a settlement keeping the Vail ranch outside restructuring.
In return, Victoria would return Emma.
Adrian whispered, “Jesus.”
Claire looked at him.
“This is what you taught her.”
He closed his eyes.
Victoria said through the screen:
“Sign it, Claire.”
Claire’s hands trembled.
For the first time since breakfast, she felt truly powerless.

Her mother had taken Emma.
And Claire’s own family had turned kidnapping into contract negotiation.
