Chapter 11 - Claire’s Last Week

Daniel listened to Claire’s audio recordings in chronological order.
He did it alone.
The first recordings were practical.
Invoice numbers.
Names.
Dates.
Then they became personal.
November 3.
“Victor knows I found Ashcroft.”
November 5.
“Vanessa told me I’m becoming obsessive. Interesting choice of word. Daniel used the same word at dinner.”
November 7.
“I’m starting to understand how this works. Victor gives Daniel certainty. I give him questions. Daniel prefers certainty.”
Daniel stopped the recording.
He walked around the room.
Then forced himself back.
November 9.
“Someone entered my studio.”
November 10.
“The brake warning came on briefly today. Victor says he’ll have transportation look at it.”
Daniel’s fingers went numb.
Claire’s crash happened November 12.
The last recording had been made that morning.
“I put the copies somewhere Victor cannot reach without admitting he is looking.”
A faint laugh.
“Sophie likes the birdhouse. Maybe someday she’ll understand why.”
Daniel covered his face.
Claire had been trying to protect evidence.
She had also been trying to protect him from his own blindness.
A knock sounded.
Patrick entered.
“Vanessa wants to negotiate.”
Daniel looked up.
“What could she possibly offer?”
“Information.”
“In exchange for what?”
“She wants you to stop opposing access to marital assets and publicly state that you do not believe she intended serious injury to Sophie.”
Daniel stood.
“No.”
“Daniel—”
“No.”
“I’m not recommending it.”
“Good.”
“She claims Victor is dangerous.”
“So is she.”
Patrick nodded.
“I told her attorney the criminal case isn’t yours to dismiss.”
Daniel turned toward the window.
“What information?”
“She says Claire’s accident wasn’t planned.”
Daniel spun around.
Patrick continued.
“She says Victor only meant to scare Claire.”
The words hung in the air.
Daniel’s voice became almost inaudible.
“She knows.”
“She claims she knows.”
“Set up a proffer with prosecutors.”
“That’s what her lawyer wants.”
“Then do it.”
Patrick shook his head.
“You don’t control that process.”
“I know.”
For once, he did know.
Vanessa had spent years exploiting Daniel’s belief that wealth meant control.
Now courts, prosecutors, investigators and boards surrounded him.
His money opened doors.
It did not let him decide what happened behind them.
Meanwhile, Sophie returned to school with a safety plan.
Daniel drove her himself.
She stopped before getting out.
“Will everyone know?”
“Some adults know enough to keep you safe.”
“Kids?”
“Probably not.”
She stared at the school entrance.
“What if they ask about Vanessa?”
“You can say you don’t want to talk.”
“What if they say bad things about you?”
Daniel hesitated.
“You can also say you don’t want to talk.”
She looked at him.
“Can I say you made a mistake?”
He almost laughed from the pain of it.
“Yes.”
Sophie nodded.
“Because you did.”
“Yes.”
She opened the door.
Then turned back.
“But you came.”
Daniel swallowed.
“I came.”
“Next time come before Mrs. Carter texts you.”
He had no answer.
Sophie got out.
That sentence stayed with him all day.
At four that afternoon, Tessa called.
“We matched Claire’s notebook to bank transfers.”
“How much?”
“Eleven-point-two million total.”
Daniel sat upright.
“You said six-point-eight.”
“That was Northstar. There are two more vendors.”
“Where did the money go?”
“Some to Victor. Some to Ashcroft. Some into investment accounts.”
“And Vanessa?”
“Approximately two-point-three million in indirect benefit.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Then Tessa said, “There’s something stranger.”
“What?”
“Some of the money went back into Mercer.”
“What does that mean?”
“It purchased company shares through intermediaries during market dips.”
Daniel understood slowly.
Victor had stolen money from Mercer Biomedical, then used it to accumulate influence inside Mercer Biomedical.
“How much stock?”
“Enough that, combined with voting authority over Sophie’s trust shares and the restructuring document you were supposed to sign Friday…”
Tessa paused.
“He could have controlled the company without owning anywhere near a majority.”
Daniel looked at Claire’s final recording.
Victor had not merely been stealing.
May you like
He had been building a takeover for years.
And Vanessa had been placed inside Daniel’s family at exactly the right time.
