Chapter 5 - The Video They Wanted the World to See

At 8:03 the next morning, Daniel’s phone began vibrating continuously.
Patrick called first.
“Don’t open social media.”
Daniel was already opening it.
A twelve-second video had been posted anonymously.
It showed Daniel slapping Vanessa.
Once.
Twice.
Then Vanessa falling.
Nothing before it.
No Sophie.
No rope.
No cane.
The caption read:
BILLIONAIRE CEO DANIEL MERCER ATTACKS WIFE AT FAMILY HOME.
By 8:15, three financial news channels were running it.
By 8:40, Mercer Biomedical’s stock had fallen seven percent.
At nine, Victor called an emergency board meeting.
Daniel attended remotely from the apartment because Sophie was in the next room with Dana Reyes.
Victor appeared on-screen in a charcoal suit.
Controlled.
Concerned.
Betrayed.
Exactly the face Daniel would have trusted forty-eight hours earlier.
“Daniel,” board chair Rebecca Lin said carefully, “we have a reputational crisis.”
“My daughter was being abused.”
“We know there are allegations involving Vanessa.”
“Not allegations. Video.”
Victor leaned forward.
“Which hasn’t been publicly released.”
Daniel stared at him.
“How interesting that the only video released begins when I arrive.”
Victor’s eyebrows lifted.
“Are you accusing me?”
“Yes.”
Several board members shifted.
Rebecca raised a hand.
“This cannot become a personal trial.”
“It became personal when my CFO helped my wife interrogate my seven-year-old daughter about documents belonging to my dead wife.”
Silence.
Victor removed his glasses.
“This is exactly why we need temporary leadership stability.”
Daniel saw the trap.
“What are you proposing?”
Rebecca answered.
“A short administrative leave while the board investigates.”
Daniel laughed without humor.
“You’re suspending me.”
“We’re protecting the company.”
Victor said softly, “Daniel, you taught all of us that Mercer must be bigger than one person.”
Claire had said something similar once.
He hated hearing it from Victor.
The vote passed eight to three.
Daniel was placed on paid administrative leave.
Victor became interim chief executive.
An hour later, Daniel received notice that Vanessa had filed for divorce.
She requested temporary exclusive use of the marital home.
And she alleged Daniel had a “history of explosive anger.”
Patrick read the petition twice.
“She’s going to use the slap as leverage.”
“She abused Sophie.”
“The two things can both be true.”
Daniel turned away.
Patrick continued.
“Do not make the mistake of believing your wrongdoing disappears because hers is worse.”
Daniel looked at him.
“I know.”
“Good. Because her attorney will build an entire case around you losing control.”
A courier arrived that afternoon.
One envelope.
No return address.
Inside was a photocopy of an old Mercer Biomedical purchase authorization.
Northstar Consulting.
$842,000.
Approved six years earlier.
Daniel’s signature was at the bottom.
A sticky note had been attached.
Ask yourself why Claire stopped trusting you.
Daniel stared at his own signature.
He remembered thousands of approvals.
He did not remember this one.
Then Sophie appeared in the doorway.
“Daddy?”
He quickly turned the paper over.
“What is it?”
She held her stuffed rabbit.
A worn white toy named Clover.
“Can we go see Mrs. Carter?”
“Why?”
Sophie looked down.
“She has Mommy’s bird.”
Daniel frowned.
“What bird?”
“The blue one.”
He crouched.
“You said the key is where Mommy told secrets to sleep.”
Sophie nodded.
“She said birds sleep in nests.”
Daniel’s pulse quickened.
“Is the key at Mrs. Carter’s?”
“No.”
“Where?”
Sophie hugged Clover.
“In the tree.”
Daniel stopped.
“The oak?”
Sophie shook her head.
“Mrs. Carter’s bluebird house.”
Years earlier, Claire and Mrs. Carter had installed a small decorative blue birdhouse along the hedge.
Daniel barely remembered it.
He called Evelyn.
They crossed into her garden with Detective Brooks present.
The birdhouse was old and weather-faded.
Mrs. Carter unscrewed it from its post.
Inside was nothing but dried grass.
Sophie reached beneath the roof.
“There.”
Her fingers found a tiny taped envelope hidden between two layers of wood.
Daniel opened it.
A brass key dropped into his palm.
Attached was a metal tag.
Underneath it was a folded piece of paper in Claire’s handwriting.
Daniel recognized the slanted letters immediately.
For Sophie, when she is old enough—or for Daniel, when he is finally ready to look.
Daniel’s throat closed.
Patrick stared at the note.
Mrs. Carter covered her mouth.
Daniel unfolded the rest.

There was only one more sentence.
Start with Union Federal, downtown branch, and do not tell Victor.
