Chapter 17 - Sophie Disappears for Eleven Minutes

It happened after school.

Not a kidnapping.

Not an abduction.

Eleven minutes.

But Daniel aged years.

The driver arrived at the apartment with Sophie.

Security opened the vehicle door.

Sophie was gone.

Her backpack remained on the seat.

Daniel’s chest stopped working.

“Where is she?”

The driver turned white.

“She was here.”

Security called police immediately.

Cameras showed Sophie entering the apartment building lobby.

Then leaving through a side door while adults were distracted.

Daniel ran outside.

He found her three blocks away beneath a small maple tree in a public park.

She sat on a bench hugging Clover.

He stopped several feet away.

Every instinct told him to grab her.

Instead, he approached slowly.

“Sophie.”

She looked up.

“You scared everyone.”

“I’m sorry.”

Daniel sat beside her.

“Why did you leave?”

She stared at the ground.

“Because I ruin things.”

His throat tightened.

“Who told you that?”

“Nobody.”

He waited.

She started crying.

“Your company is bad because I found the key. Mrs. Carter gets threats because she filmed me. Vanessa got hurt. Mommy got hurt because of papers.”

Daniel turned toward her.

“No.”

“If I didn’t remember—”

“No.”

He rarely interrupted her.

This time he did.

“Listen to me. Adults made choices before you ever understood what a company was.”

Sophie wiped her face.

“But the key—”

“The key showed the truth. It didn’t create it.”

She stared at him.

Daniel continued.

“When a room is dark and you turn on a light, the light didn’t make the mess.”

Sophie sniffed.

“It just shows it?”

“Yes.”

She thought.

“Was Mommy the light?”

Daniel almost broke.

“Yes.”

“And I’m the light?”

“Yes.”

“What are you?”

He looked away toward the trees.

“For a long time? Someone with his eyes closed.”

Sophie leaned against him.

He let out a breath.

After a while she whispered, “I don’t want to be evidence.”

Daniel’s whole body went still.

“Did someone call you that?”

“I heard people.”

His anger rose, then he controlled it.

“You’re not evidence.”

“But the videos—”

“The videos are evidence. The key is evidence. You are Sophie.”

She looked at him.

“Just Sophie?”

“The most important Sophie I know.”

“That’s because you only know one.”

He laughed.

She smiled.

The laughter lasted three seconds.

It was enough.

Back at the apartment, Daniel changed the security plan.

Not more guards around Sophie.

Fewer visible adults.

A child therapist consulted.

School transportation changed.

Daniel also did something the board considered reckless.

He formally resigned from all day-to-day Mercer Biomedical duties until investigations concluded.

Rebecca called.

“You don’t have to resign.”

“Yes, I do.”

“This may look like an admission.”

“It’s an admission that I can’t fix my daughter while fighting for a CEO chair sixteen hours a day.”

Silence.

Then Rebecca said, “Victor will use this.”

“Victor uses everything.”

“You may never get the company back.”

Daniel looked toward Sophie’s room.

“I know.”

That night Tessa called.

The red ledger had been authenticated as Claire’s writing.

It proved Victor directed fraudulent payments.

It also showed Vanessa knowingly approved some.

But Claire had written something on the final page.

Daniel read the scanned line.

DM does not know the structure. He knows enough to ask. He chooses not to.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Claire had not believed him criminal.

She had believed him willfully incurious.

That might save him legally.

It would not save his pride.

Then Detective Brooks called.

The stolen phone Vanessa described had been located.

Not recovered.

Located.

A device with its identifier had connected briefly to Wi-Fi at a private airfield outside Boston.

A jet departed thirty minutes later.

Destination:

Montreal.

Registered passenger:

Victor Hale.
