Chapter 5 - The Price of Anger

Daniel wanted to confront Rachel immediately.
Sarah stopped him.
“If you accuse her before the forensic copy is complete, she can claim you contaminated the device.”
“She used my tablet.”
“We strongly suspect she used your tablet.”
“I can see her necklace.”
“You can see pixels.”
Daniel hated legal precision when his life was collapsing.
By Monday, he hated it more.
The Whitmore board met at 9:00 a.m. in Manhattan.
Victor arrived smiling.
Daniel almost crossed the room.
Sarah caught his eye.
Don’t.
Nora Bell, Whitmore’s seventy-year-old independent chair, called the meeting to order.
Victor distributed a financing presentation.
“We remain prepared to provide eighty million dollars.”
Daniel interrupted.
“Using a fraudulent consent.”
Victor looked wounded.
“That accusation is reckless.”
“You were in my house with my wife discussing my signature.”
“Personal resentment is not corporate governance.”
The room shifted.
Daniel knew instantly that he had made a mistake.
Victor had wanted him angry.
Wanted the directors to see exactly this.
Nora leaned forward.
“Daniel, sit down.”
He remained standing.
Victor continued softly.
“Whitmore faces a liquidity gap caused by aggressive expansion approved by Daniel himself. Halcyon offered a solution.”
“With warrants that give you control.”
“Protection against default.”
“You bought shares through nominees.”
Victor smiled.
“Lawful investment entities.”
Sarah spoke.
“Transfers appear to violate contractual notice provisions.”
“Then litigate them.”
Daniel slammed his palm on the table.
“You planned this.”
Silence.
Victor looked at the directors.
“This is the man asking you to reject eighty million dollars because he discovered his wife is having an affair.”
Daniel felt the humiliation strike like a physical blow.
Nora’s voice became icy.
“Victor, personal matters do not belong here.”
“He brought them here.”
Daniel realized too late that he had.
The board postponed the financing decision for seventy-two hours.
But it also created a special committee to investigate Daniel’s conduct and the disputed consent.
A power reversal disguised as neutrality.
Outside, Sarah rounded on him.
“I told you not to confront him.”
“He lied to their faces.”
“And you helped him.”
Daniel looked away.
By afternoon, the consequences worsened.
Victor’s attorneys sent a defamation notice.
A lender requested additional liquidity information.
Two minority investors called asking whether Daniel was mentally fit to lead the company.
Then came the custody hearing.
Rachel’s attorney played the gala video.
Daniel appeared furious.
Caleb appeared frightened.
Marissa said, “My client is concerned that Daniel is involving the child in adult accusations.”
Daniel’s lawyer objected.
The judge watched the complete clip supplied by Elena.
It showed Victor reaching toward Caleb.
It showed Daniel blocking him.
That helped.
But Daniel’s shouting the following morning had also been captured by a hallway camera.
That did not.
The judge ordered temporary equal parenting time.
Neither parent could discuss the litigation or corporate accusations with Caleb.
Victor was not permitted contact with the child during Rachel’s parenting time, pending review.
Daniel considered that a victory.
Until Caleb heard the schedule.
“You mean I have to leave here?”
“Only some days.”
“With Mom?”
“Yes.”
Caleb looked at Rachel across the courthouse hallway.
“What if Victor comes?”
“He can’t,” Daniel said.
“You promise?”
Daniel hesitated.
He could not promise what another adult would do.
“I promise people are watching out for you.”
Caleb’s eyes filled.
That answer was not enough.
Before Rachel took him, Caleb hugged Daniel.
Then slipped something into his palm.
The brass key.
Daniel frowned.
“I thought Elena had this.”
“I took it from the desk.”
“Caleb.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Why?”
Caleb whispered, “Because Mom was looking for another key.”
Daniel went still.
“When?”
“Before the party. She opened Grandpa Charles’s boxes.”
“What kind of key?”
Caleb glanced toward Rachel.
“A bigger one. She got mad when she couldn’t find it.”
Rachel called his name.
Caleb pulled away.
Daniel closed his fist around the brass key.
He could not question his son further.
The judge had just ordered him not to.
May you like
But one thought followed him all the way back to Whitmore House.
Charles had hidden more than one thing.
