Chapter 8 - The Offer

Victor called at midnight.

Daniel almost ignored him.

Then he answered.

“What?”

“Rachel tells me you found Thomas Greene.”

Daniel sat up.

“How do you know what Rachel tells anyone?”

Victor laughed quietly.

“You still think this is about romance.”

Daniel said nothing.

Victor continued.

“Whitmore has twelve days of comfortable liquidity. Maybe eighteen if Sarah delays vendors.”

“You caused the acceleration.”

“I negotiated around weakness.”

“You obtained confidential information from my wife.”

“Your wife gave information voluntarily.”

Daniel’s fingers tightened around the phone.

“Why?”

“Ask her.”

“I’m asking you.”

“You inherited a fortress with cracks in the foundation. I noticed.”

“And Rachel?”

A pause.

“Rachel noticed you never saw her standing inside it.”

Daniel ended the call.

The next morning brought three disasters.

A construction lender suspended a draw.

A business publication reported “leadership instability” at Whitmore.

And Victor filed suit in New York Supreme Court seeking enforcement of the disputed financing agreement and twelve-million-dollar break fee.

By noon, Whitmore’s board called an emergency meeting.

Nora Bell looked exhausted.

“We need liquidity.”

Daniel stared at the directors.

“You cannot reward fraud because fraud created urgency.”

Nora replied, “We also cannot make payroll with moral arguments.”

Victor was not present.

His lawyers did not need him there.

Daniel presented the Northbridge files.

Several directors were disturbed.

But one asked the question Daniel feared.

“What does conduct from 2014 have to do with whether you authorized the 2026 financing?”

Sarah answered.

“It establishes motive and pattern.”

“But not invalidity.”

Not yet.

Daniel’s anger rose again.

He fought it.

Barely.

The board authorized Sarah to seek emergency financing elsewhere.

But it also required Daniel to recuse himself from negotiations involving Halcyon.

Afterward, Nora stopped him.

“I knew your father.”

Daniel waited.

“He was brilliant. He also believed admitting weakness caused weakness.”

“You knew about Northbridge?”

“Not details.”

“Everyone knew enough to stay silent.”

Nora’s eyes hardened.

“Do not turn disappointment into recklessness.”

He walked away.

That evening Rachel came to Whitmore House alone.

She placed a folder on the library desk.

“What’s this?”

“A proposal.”

Daniel opened it.

Divorce settlement terms.

Rachel requested thirty percent of marital investment assets, the Manhattan apartment, shared custody, and a protective provision preventing Daniel from relocating Caleb outside Westchester County.

The company shares inherited from Charles were excluded.

Daniel looked up.

“This is your offer?”

“My lawyer’s.”

“And yours?”

She swallowed.

“Victor says he can restore the financing if you stop fighting the consent.”

Daniel stared at her.

“You came here to trade my company for your divorce.”

“No.”

“That is exactly what you said.”

“I’m trying to stop everything from collapsing.”

“You helped collapse it.”

Rachel stepped closer.

“You want me to confess to everything because it makes you the innocent one.”

“I’m not innocent.”

She stopped.

Daniel forced himself to continue.

“My father concealed fraud. I brought Victor into negotiations. I ignored warnings from Sarah because I wanted expansion faster than the company could support.”

Rachel looked surprised.

“But I did not authorize you to sign for me.”

Her expression changed.

Daniel saw it.

There.

“What did you do?”

Rachel looked toward the door.

“Rachel.”

“I accessed the tablet.”

His pulse hammered.

“Did you sign the consent?”

“Victor told me it was an updated internal authorization.”

“Did you sign my name?”

“I clicked the approval.”

Daniel stepped backward as if she had struck him.

“You impersonated me.”

“I thought you had already agreed to the business terms.”

“You knew I hadn’t read them.”

She began crying.

“I thought I was protecting the company.”

“No. You were trusting him over me.”

“He told me if the financing failed, thousands of employees would suffer because of your pride.”

“And you believed him?”

“I believed a lot of things.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Why?”

Her answer came almost too quietly to hear.

“Because he knew my father before I knew you.”

Daniel froze.

Rachel wiped her face.

“Victor wasn’t a stranger when he contacted me two years ago.”

“How long have you known him?”

Rachel met his eyes.

“Since I was twenty-one.”

Daniel felt the floor shift beneath him again.

“You told me I introduced you.”

“I lied.”

“Were you with him then?”

Rachel’s silence lasted two seconds.

That was enough.

Daniel whispered, “Oh my God.”

“He was my father’s consultant. We dated for a year.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

May you like

His marriage had just acquired a history he had never known existed.

And somewhere inside that hidden history was the reason Victor had chosen Rachel.
