Chapter 2 - Margaret’s Call

Victoria did not allow Ethan out of her arms.
Not when airport security entered.
Not when Hale Meridian counsel began calling Thomas.
Not even when Adrian demanded that his son be brought to him.
“He’s my child too,” Adrian said.
Ethan buried his face against Victoria’s shoulder.
Victoria looked at her husband.
“Then act like it.”
Thomas moved between them.
“Mr. Hale, Founder Aviation Trust authority has been suspended pending review.”
“My wife does not own these planes.”
“Neither do you personally.”
Adrian’s eyes flashed.
Victoria remembered Henry Hale explaining the structure years earlier.
The aircraft belonged to a trust-controlled aviation company, not Adrian.
The arrangement limited liability and prevented one family member from using the fleet during an internal emergency.
At the time, Victoria had thought Henry paranoid.
Now she understood.
Thomas lowered his voice.
“I recommend everyone remain here until counsel clarifies Ethan’s travel status.”
Adrian laughed bitterly.
“Travel status? There is no custody order.”
He was correct.
That frightened Victoria more than if he had lied.
Absent a court order, either married parent could often travel with their child. An international departure was not automatically unlawful merely because the other parent objected.
But deception mattered.
So did the prepared affidavits.
Victoria called Caroline Ross.
Caroline had represented Henry Hale in trust litigation and later became Victoria’s personal attorney.
She answered on the second ring.
“I need you at Teterboro.”
“What happened?”
“Adrian tried to leave for Geneva with Ethan.”
Silence.
“Without you?”
“Yes.”
“Do not let that aircraft move.”
“I already froze it.”
Another silence.
“The black card?”
“Yes.”
“Henry would be pleased.”
“I don’t care whether Henry would be pleased.”
Victoria lowered her voice.
“There are custody papers. Medical allegations. Something called Nighthawk. Ethan is listed as a primary asset.”
Caroline’s tone changed instantly.
“Photograph everything you are lawfully permitted to access. Do not alter files. Do not sign anything. Do not make threats.”
“I want to hit him.”
“Wanting is free. Doing is expensive.”
Victoria looked toward Adrian.
“Understood.”
Her phone rang again.
Margaret Hale.
Victoria stared at the name.
Adrian saw it.
“Don’t answer.”
That guaranteed she would.
“Margaret.”
“My dear, Thomas says there’s some confusion.”
Margaret’s voice was warm.
Elegant.
Controlled.
She was sixty-three, widowed, and still treated by half of New York’s philanthropic world as royalty.
“Confusion?” Victoria asked.
“Adrian explained that you became upset at the terminal.”
“Did he explain why my four-year-old son was booked to Switzerland six days ago without me?”
A pause.
“Ethan was attending a family meeting.”
“He’s four.”
“His future is the subject of the meeting.”
Victoria looked toward Thomas’s tablet.
“Nighthawk?”
The silence on the line changed.
There it was.
Margaret knew.
Victoria continued.
“Why is my son listed as an asset?”
“It is internal terminology.”
“For what?”
“Victoria, this conversation is becoming unnecessarily dramatic.”
The same strategy Adrian used.
Define her alarm as instability.
Victoria forced her breathing slower.
“No. I’m asking a specific question.”
Margaret lowered her voice.
“Put Adrian on.”
“No.”
“Victoria.”
“No.”
Margaret’s warmth vanished.
“You are exercising authority you do not understand.”
“Then explain it.”
“Not over the phone.”
“You expected Ethan to be in Geneva before I understood it.”
Margaret did not answer.
Victoria’s stomach tightened.
Caroline texted:
DO NOT LEAVE AIRPORT WITH ADRIAN. POLICE CAN DOCUMENT. FAMILY COURT EMERGENCY FILING UNDERWAY.
Victoria looked toward Thomas.
“Can airport police make an incident report?”
“Yes.”
Adrian laughed.
“For what? Traveling with my son?”
“For preparing legal documents alleging I’m mentally unstable while secretly removing me from the flight.”
Serena finally spoke.
“Those were drafts.”
Victoria turned toward her.
“Why were you listed as Ethan’s caregiver?”
Serena’s lips parted.
Adrian interrupted.
“Do not answer her.”
Victoria smiled without humor.
“Interesting instruction from a man who says I’m misunderstanding everything.”
Ethan lifted his head.
“Mommy, airplane?”
Victoria’s anger broke for one second.
She kissed his hair.
“Not today, sweetheart.”
Adrian stepped toward him.
“Ethan can still go with me.”
Ethan immediately shook his head.
“No Geneva.”
Adrian’s face tightened.
Victoria saw something painful there.
He loved Ethan.
That was what made the situation worse.
People were easier to understand when love and betrayal lived in separate bodies.
Adrian’s phone rang again.
This time he answered.
“What?”
Victoria watched his expression.
“No, she activated the founder hold.”
Pause.
“I know.”
Longer pause.
“She found the case.”
Serena closed her eyes.
Adrian turned away.
Victoria heard one sentence.
“No, Mother, do not file anything yet.”
He ended the call.
The terminal seemed suddenly too quiet.
Victoria stepped closer.
“File what?”
Adrian looked at her.
“You should go home.”
“What is your mother filing?”
“Nothing.”
“You just told her not to.”
His jaw tightened.
Caroline arrived twenty-seven minutes later with another attorney, Daniel Kim, a family-law specialist.
Within an hour, Daniel had drafted an emergency application in Bergen County Superior Court seeking temporary restraints preventing either parent from removing Ethan from New Jersey or the United States without agreement or court authorization.
Because Ethan’s primary home was in Alpine, New Jersey, jurisdiction was straightforward.
Daniel looked at Victoria.
“You need to understand something. The airport incident helps. The documents help. But Adrian is still Ethan’s father. We are asking for emergency restraint, not declaring him guilty of kidnapping.”
“I understand.”
“Do you?”
She looked at Ethan.
“I’m trying.”
That answer satisfied him more.
Airport police documented the black case and the prepared legal papers.
Thomas preserved server logs.
Then he called Victoria aside.
“There is something you should see.”
He opened the Nighthawk record again.
This time more fields had loaded.
PROGRAM PURPOSE: SUCCESSION CONTINUITY / BENEFICIARY CONTROL EVENT

Victoria’s mouth went dry.

Victoria finally understood that taking Ethan was not the entire plan.
Removing her from the aircraft had been only Phase One.
