Chapter 9 - The Doctor Who Never Examined Her

Dr. Lewis Caldwell was furious.

He was not Victoria’s doctor.

He had never treated her.

He had never met her socially.

He had never signed a diagnosis declaring her unstable.

His lawyer contacted Daniel after receiving a preservation subpoena.

The supposed physician certification inside Nighthawk carried Caldwell’s electronic signature.

Caldwell said it was fabricated.

He had consulted for Hale Meridian’s executive-health program twice.

That was the only connection.

His digital signature had appeared on template forms maintained by an outside benefits administrator.

Someone had copied it.

“Can you prove that?” Victoria asked.

Caldwell’s lawyer nodded.

“The document metadata lists creation on a family-office workstation. Dr. Caldwell was lecturing in California that day.”

Forgery changed everything.

The medical narrative was no longer merely manipulative.

Somebody had manufactured evidence for anticipated court use.

Daniel immediately informed the family judge.

Caroline informed Delaware counsel.

The Hale Meridian special committee hired an outside digital-forensics firm.

Within three days they traced creation of the false certification to a laptop assigned to Serena.

Victoria wanted to condemn her immediately.

Then Serena’s lawyer produced something unexpected.

Screen-sharing logs.

Serena’s laptop had been remotely accessed from Margaret Hale’s home office on the night the file was created.

“Margaret’s going to say Serena did it,” Victoria said.

Caroline nodded.

“Serena will say Margaret did.”

“Who do we believe?”

“Evidence.”

The remote session lasted thirty-seven minutes.

During it, the certification file was created.

Serena had been at a Hale Meridian investor dinner in Manhattan with thirty witnesses.

Margaret had been at home.

Victoria felt the conspiracy narrowing.

Serena met with investigators voluntarily.

This time, Victoria was not present.

She learned afterward that Serena admitted helping prepare aggressive custody scenarios.

She admitted knowing the medical evaluation was intended to pressure Victoria.

She denied creating the forged doctor signature.

Then she produced text messages.

Margaret:

Lewis is covered. Use the template.

Serena:

He has not evaluated her.

Margaret:

No one is filing tomorrow. We need preparedness.

Serena:

A signed certification is not preparedness.

Margaret:

Then don’t look at it.

Victoria stared at the messages.

Margaret had understood exactly what she was doing.

Adrian had received a copy of the certification three days later.

His response:

Is this real?

Margaret:

Real enough if needed.

Adrian:

Delete it.

Margaret:

Stop panicking.

There was no evidence Adrian deleted it.

It remained in the black case.

Victoria looked at Daniel.

“He knew.”

“He knew the certification was questionable.”

“And still carried it to the airport.”

“Yes.”

Another line crossed.

Adrian had objected.

Then done nothing.

That pattern again.

At the next family-court hearing, Judge Miriam Ellis reviewed the airport incident, tracking tags, Nighthawk documents, and Caldwell evidence.

Adrian’s lawyers did not seek international travel.

They asked for regular parenting time.

Daniel opposed unsupervised visits.

The judge ordered temporary supervised parenting at a professional center.

Victoria felt relief.

Then Judge Ellis addressed her.

“Mrs. Hale, I understand your alarm.”

“Yes, Your Honor.”

“But I also understand you invoked broad corporate aviation powers during a marital confrontation.”

Victoria’s pulse increased.

“I was preventing the flight.”

“That authority may have been valid. That does not make every future use appropriate.”

“I understand.”

“Do you?”

The question embarrassed her.

The judge continued.

“This court is concerned with Ethan, not who controls Hale Meridian.”

Victoria nodded.

Judge Ellis turned to Adrian.

“And Mr. Hale, this court is profoundly concerned that your litigation strategy appears to have been prepared alongside secret international travel.”

Adrian looked down.

The court continued the restraints.

Ethan stayed with Victoria.

Adrian received three supervised visits weekly.

Margaret received none.

Outside the courtroom, Serena stood near an elevator with her attorney.

Victoria walked past.

“Victoria.”

She stopped.

Serena looked pale.

“I’m sorry.”

Victoria stared at her.

“For sleeping with my husband?”

Serena winced.

“For helping Nighthawk.”

“Which part are you sorry for?”

“All of it.”

“No.”

Victoria’s voice was quiet.

“You’re sorry it became real enough to frighten you.”

Serena looked as though she had been slapped.

Victoria walked away.

Then Serena called after her.

“Adrian didn’t start the affair.”

Victoria stopped.

She turned.

“What?”

Serena swallowed.

“I did.”

Victoria almost laughed.

“Congratulations?”

“No. You need to understand why.”

“I really don’t.”

“Margaret encouraged it.”

Victoria froze.

Serena’s face crumpled.

“She told me you were already leaving. She told me Adrian needed someone loyal before Nighthawk moved forward.”

Victoria’s stomach turned.

Margaret had not merely planned to remove Victoria legally.

May you like

She had helped manufacture the collapse of the marriage that would justify it.

The affair itself had been another phase.
