Chapter 1 - The Key Beneath the Bed

Six-year-old Chloe Vale was already crying when her grandmother lifted her away from the hospital bed.

“Grandma, STOP! Please!”

Eleanor Vale released her beside the bed. Chloe landed safely but hard on the polished floor, curling around her worn brown teddy bear while the oxygen cannula shifted against her pale cheeks.

The heart monitor accelerated.

BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!

Eleanor stood over her in an immaculate burgundy silk blouse, looking more irritated than frightened.

“You will stop embarrassing this family.”

The hospital-room door slammed open.

Marcus Vale charged inside wearing the navy tuxedo he had been forced to wear to the Vale Foundation’s annual donor dinner.

Then he froze.

His daughter was on the floor.

His mother was standing above her.

“GET AWAY FROM MY DAUGHTER!”

Eleanor stumbled backward when Marcus stepped between them.

“You ever put your hands on her again, and you answer to me.”

Then Marcus dropped to his knees.

The fury disappeared from his face the moment he touched Chloe.

“Daddy’s here.”

Chloe wrapped both arms around his neck.

“She was taking Teddy.”

Marcus looked at the worn bear pressed between them.

Before he could ask why, Nurse Sarah Bennett rushed into the room.

“What happened?”

“She was impossible,” Eleanor said. “She wouldn’t listen.”

Chloe’s fingers tightened around the bear.

“She pulled me out of bed.”

Silence settled over the room.

Sarah slowly looked at Eleanor.

“I was trying to control her,” Eleanor snapped.

Marcus stood.

“She’s six.”

His voice became dangerously quiet.

“And she’s sick.”

Eleanor’s expression shifted.

“You shouldn’t even be here.”

Marcus stared at her.

“What?”

“The foundation dinner—”

“My daughter is in the hospital.”

“The board was there.”

“I don’t care.”

“You should.”

Something in Eleanor’s tone made Marcus pause.

Then he noticed Chloe’s teddy bear had a torn seam beneath its left arm.

A tiny brass object lay partially hidden beneath the bedside cabinet.

Marcus bent down.

Eleanor’s face emptied of color.

“Marcus.”

He reached farther.

“DON’T TOUCH THAT!”

Everyone froze.

Marcus turned slowly.

His mother had looked angry thirty seconds earlier.

Now she looked terrified.

He picked up a small brass key.

A narrow metal tag hung from it.

314.

“What is this?”

Eleanor stepped forward.

“Give it to me.”

Marcus closed his fist.

“Why?”

“It belongs to me.”

Chloe lifted her head.

“No.”

Eleanor looked sharply at her.

Chloe whispered, “It came out of Teddy.”

Marcus stared at the bear.

It had belonged to Chloe’s mother, Julia.

Julia had given it to Chloe only weeks before dying from cancer two years earlier.

Marcus had never seen the key.

Neither, apparently, had Eleanor.

Sarah moved beside Chloe.

“Mrs. Vale, I need you to leave.”

Eleanor ignored her.

“Marcus, your wife was ill for a long time. She hid things. She became paranoid.”

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

“Don’t talk about Julia.”

“I’m trying to protect you.”

“From a brass key?”

Eleanor’s eyes flickered toward Chloe.

That was enough.

Marcus stepped closer.

“What were you looking for in my daughter’s teddy bear?”

“I wasn’t looking for anything.”

Chloe spoke through tears.

“She said Mommy should have burned it.”

Marcus felt something cold move through him.

“What?”

Eleanor’s lips parted.

Chloe continued.

“Grandma kept asking what Mommy put inside Teddy.”

Sarah stared at Eleanor.

Marcus did too.

Then Eleanor recovered.

“She’s medicated. She’s confused.”

Sarah’s voice hardened.

“Chloe has not received anything that would cause confusion.”

Eleanor turned on her.

“You stay out of this.”

“No,” Marcus said. “She doesn’t.”

He walked to the door and called hospital security.

His mother laughed once.

“You’re calling security on me?”

“You dragged my daughter from her bed.”

“I raised you.”

“And apparently you think that gives you ownership of everyone in this family.”

Eleanor moved toward him.

“This is bigger than you understand.”

Marcus opened his hand and looked at the key.

314.

“Then explain it.”

For the first time, Eleanor had no answer.

Two security officers arrived.

Sarah explained what she had witnessed.

Chloe told them what had happened before Marcus entered.

Eleanor’s humiliation transformed into fury.

At the doorway, she looked back at Marcus.

“You walk down this road, you’ll destroy everything your father built.”

Marcus stared at her.

“Maybe I’m about to find out what you built on top of it.”

Her expression sharpened.

“Be at the office at nine.”

“For what?”

“You’ll see.”

Security escorted her away.

Marcus locked the door behind them.

Chloe looked exhausted.

He sat beside her and smoothed her hair.

“I’m sorry I left tonight.”

“Grandma said you had important people.”

Marcus swallowed.

“No one is more important than you.”

Chloe opened the teddy bear’s damaged seam.

“There was paper too.”

Marcus frowned.

“What paper?”

She reached inside the stuffing.

Her fingers came out holding a tightly folded yellow note.

Marcus unfolded it.

The handwriting stopped his breath.

Julia.

Only seven words had been written.

Marcus—if Eleanor finds the key, don’t trust her.

Below that was an address.

And one final line.

Locker 314. Go alone.

Marcus read it twice.

Then his phone buzzed.

A message from the chairman of Vale Medical Holdings.

Emergency board meeting. 9:00 A.M. Your mother requested a vote regarding your fitness to remain CEO.

Marcus looked toward the closed hospital door.

Eleanor had not merely threatened him.

May you like

She had already made her first move.

And whatever Julia had hidden two years ago had just turned Marcus’s own mother into his enemy.
