Chapter 9 - Someone in the Library

The library door handle moved.

Eleanor extinguished the lamp.

Marcus stared at her.

“What are you doing?”

“Quiet.”

Footsteps stopped outside.

Then continued.

A side door closed somewhere deeper in the mansion.

Eleanor waited.

Marcus had never seen her afraid inside her own home.

“Who has access?” he whispered.

“Staff. Security.”

“Graham?”

She didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

Marcus photographed every page of Victor’s binder while Eleanor watched.

The letter revealed that Victor had authorized early North Bridge transactions to hide the company’s financial weakness.

But it also instructed Graham to create legal distance between Victor and the transactions.

The language was ugly.

Not ambiguous.

Marcus’s father had been willing to let his attorney become the fall guy if regulators discovered anything.

Marcus felt an old image collapse.

Victor Vale had been the unreachable standard of Marcus’s childhood.

Disciplined.

Brilliant.

Honorable.

Apparently, he had also been afraid.

“Why show me this now?” Marcus asked.

Eleanor sat.

“Because Graham has lost control.”

“You mean you’ve lost control of Graham.”

Her eyes flashed.

“You think I enjoyed any of this?”

“You stole money.”

“I preserved the company your father endangered.”

“And then paid yourself.”

“I was entitled to compensation.”

“Twenty-seven million dollars?”

“Do you know what I gave up?”

Marcus almost shouted.

Instead, he remembered Chloe.

Yelling makes people stop listening.

“So that’s your justification.”

“My justification is that everyone benefited.”

“Not Julia.”

Eleanor’s face hardened.

“Julia was naive.”

“She found you.”

“She found numbers. She never understood history.”

“She understood enough for you to forge her signature.”

Eleanor looked genuinely offended.

“I did not forge Julia’s signature.”

“Graham?”

“I assumed she signed those papers.”

“While she could barely hold a pen?”

A silence.

Eleanor looked away.

For the first time, Marcus believed she might not have known every detail.

That did not absolve her.

But it changed the map.

“Did you ask Graham to prepare a guardianship petition?”

“Yes.”

Marcus clenched his jaw.

“Why?”

“Because you were falling apart.”

“My wife was dying.”

“You missed meetings. You screamed at doctors. You stopped sleeping.”

“And your answer was to take Chloe?”

“My answer was to have protection ready.”

“For whom?”

“For Chloe.”

“No.”

Marcus leaned closer.

“For your voting shares.”

Eleanor’s eyes sharpened.

“Chloe inherited Julia’s portion. If you became trustee and then collapsed, you controlled more than half the company through her.”

“That’s how Julia’s trust worked.”

“And you were not stable.”

“You don’t get to convert grief into theft.”

Eleanor flinched.

Then she said something unexpected.

“Graham intended to.”

Marcus stared.

“He wanted control of Chloe’s trust?”

“He wanted North Bridge appointed fiduciary.”

“We know.”

Eleanor’s composure cracked.

“You don’t know the rest.”

“What rest?”

“Graham has been negotiating the merger for eighteen months.”

“Before my board suspension.”

“Yes.”

“With you.”

“At first.”

Marcus went silent.

Eleanor admitted she had supported a merger because she believed consolidation would protect Vale.

But three months earlier she discovered North Bridge planned to finance the acquisition using debt secured against Vale assets.

A leveraged takeover.

Once completed, Graham could strip the company.

“Why didn’t you stop him?”

“He has documents.”

“Blackmail.”

Eleanor looked toward Victor’s binder.

“My signature is on transactions that would put me in prison.”

Marcus gave a bitter laugh.

“So now you want me.”

“I want the company protected.”

“And Chloe?”

Eleanor hesitated.

That hesitation told him everything.

“You still don’t understand,” Marcus whispered. “She comes first.”

A shadow moved under the library door.

Marcus saw it.

So did Eleanor.

The door opened.

Calvin Ross stepped inside.

Marcus stood.

“What are you doing here?”

Calvin raised both hands.

“I followed you.”

“You’re suspended.”

“Yes.”

“Then why are you inside my mother’s house?”

“Because someone accessed Julia’s preserved security files tonight.”

Eleanor stared.

“Who?”

Calvin looked at Marcus.

“Graham’s credentials.”

Marcus turned toward Eleanor.

“Where is Graham now?”

“I don’t know.”

Then the security alarm screamed.

The library windows flashed red.

Calvin moved toward the hallway.

“Stay here.”

Marcus ignored him.

They reached Graham’s former guest office.

The safe stood open.

Empty.

Eleanor whispered, “He took everything.”

Then Marcus saw a sheet of paper on the desk.

A message.

You should have stayed loyal.

Beneath it was a photocopy of Chloe’s guardianship petition.

Except this version had been filed with the court that afternoon.

Graham had escalated.

Eleanor was no longer controlling the weapon.

He was.
