Chapter 1 - The Second File

“Sign it. My son’s child will not be raised by you.”

Grace Ashford had barely pushed herself upright when Eleanor grabbed her wrist.

Pain shot through Grace’s exhausted body.

“Let go of me.”

Eleanor pulled her away from the bassinet and slapped her twice.

The sound cracked through the private maternity suite.

Grace staggered against the table.

Beside the bed, her newborn daughter slept safely beneath the same cream hospital blanket the nurse had wrapped around her after delivery.

Outside, rain hammered the windows of St. Victoria Medical Center.

Eleanor Ashford stood immaculate in black wool and pearls, as if she had come from a board meeting instead of attacking the woman who had given birth eighteen hours earlier.

She dropped a cream-colored document onto the table.

“Sign.”

Grace looked down.

PETITION AND CONSENT FOR TEMPORARY GUARDIANSHIP.

Her daughter’s name appeared beneath it.

NORA ELISE ASHFORD.

Grace’s chest tightened.

“You were temporary,” Eleanor said. “The baby isn’t.”

Grace looked up.

Eleanor had never liked her.

Grace came from a professional but ordinary family. Her father had been a physician before his death. Her mother, Miriam Hale, had worked in hospital administration.

The Ashfords were something else.

Old California money.

Ashford Medical Holdings controlled eleven private hospitals, rehabilitation centers, specialty clinics, and a medical real-estate portfolio worth hundreds of millions.

Eleanor treated social hierarchy as natural law.

Still, she had tolerated Grace because Ethan loved her.

Or Grace had thought so.

Until Ethan disappeared.

Yesterday morning he had kissed Grace before leaving the maternity suite.

“I’ll be back before lunch.”

He never returned.

His phone went dead.

Eleanor arrived six hours later and said Ethan had left Los Angeles.

“He needed distance,” she claimed.

Grace had not believed her.

Now she picked up the guardianship papers.

“You expect me to sign my baby over to you?”

“It is temporary.”

“You just said I was temporary.”

Eleanor’s eyes narrowed.

“Ethan understood the situation.”

Grace scanned the document.

Then she saw his signature.

ETHAN JONATHAN ASHFORD.

She stared.

“He never signed this.”

“He signed everything before he disappeared.”

Too quickly.

Grace looked at the date.

Yesterday.

9:16 p.m.

Her eyes moved to Nora’s electronic hospital bracelet.

The bracelet synchronized with an infant-security record listing authorized parent entries.

Grace had checked it obsessively after Ethan vanished.

At 11:43 p.m., Ethan’s credentials had been logged at the secured maternity floor.

Grace lifted Nora’s wrist.

“You said Ethan left town yesterday afternoon.”

Eleanor’s face did not move.

“This says he checked in here last night.”

For the first time, something broke through her control.

Fear.

Eleanor lunged for the paperwork.

Grace pulled back.

Eleanor’s structured handbag slipped from the chair.

A black plastic card hit the floor.

Grace reached it first.

RESTRICTED RECORDS ACCESS.

E. ASHFORD.

Below Eleanor’s initials, written in blue ink, was a room number.

B-417.

“Give me that.”

Grace stood between Eleanor and the bassinet.

“Why do you have restricted maternity-record access?”

“I’m chair of the hospital foundation.”

“That doesn’t give you patient-record access.”

Eleanor extended her hand.

“Grace.”

“No.”

“You have no idea what you’re involving yourself in.”

“Then explain it.”

Eleanor said nothing.

Grace pressed the nurse-call button.

Eleanor’s expression changed again.

“You’ll regret humiliating me.”

Grace’s cheek still burned.

“You should worry about what happens when I tell them you hit me.”

Eleanor looked toward the sleeping baby.

“I am trying to protect Nora.”

“From what?”

Eleanor met her eyes.

“You.”

A nurse entered.

Grace immediately said, “I want Mrs. Ashford removed from my room.”

Eleanor stiffened.

“Grace.”

“And I want this documented.”

The nurse looked at the red mark on Grace’s face.

“Mrs. Ashford, please step outside.”

Eleanor leaned close before leaving.

“If you go looking for Ethan, you may find something you cannot survive.”

Grace watched her walk out.

Twenty minutes later, with Nora safely in the nursery under a security hold Grace personally requested, Grace put on a robe and slippers.

She should have stayed in bed.

Instead she took Eleanor’s access card.

B-417 was below the maternity floor.

The elevator required staff credentials.

The black card worked.

BEEP.

ACCESS GRANTED.

Grace entered a dim corridor lined with locked records rooms.

Her heart pounded.

Room B-417 contained secured maternity archives.

She tapped the card again.

BEEP.

Inside stood rows of cabinets.

One drawer was slightly open.

A sealed file sat inside.

Grace pulled it out.

Attached to the front was a photograph.

Ethan.

Her husband.

The image had been taken one year earlier.

Beneath it:

PATIENT REFERENCE: ASHFORD FAMILY MATERNITY MATTER 02.

Grace’s fingers trembled.

She opened the envelope.

A newborn bracelet fell into her palm.

Almost identical to Nora’s.

The date was thirteen months earlier.

Grace whispered, “There was another baby?”

A voice came from behind her.

“You should have stayed upstairs.”

Grace turned.

Eleanor stood in the doorway.

This time she did not deny anything.

Grace pulled a small hospital recorder from the envelope.

It activated automatically.

Ethan’s voice filled the room.

“Grace… if Mom gets to the second file before you do, take the baby and leave.”

Grace stopped breathing.

Eleanor’s face drained of color.

The recording continued.

“Don’t trust the guardianship documents. Don’t trust the trust records. And until you know why the first baby was hidden… don’t trust your mother either.”

Grace stared at Eleanor.

Then she opened the final sleeve.

Inside was a photograph.

Eleanor stood holding a newborn.

Beside her was a woman Grace recognized instantly.

Miriam Hale.

Her mother.

Grace’s knees nearly gave way.

Both women were looking directly at the camera.

Between them, taped to the bottom of the photograph, was a label.

BABY CALEB ASHFORD.

Grace slowly raised her eyes.

“Whose baby is Caleb?”

Eleanor’s lips parted.

For the first time in all the years Grace had known her, Eleanor Ashford looked terrified.

May you like

And when she finally answered, her voice was almost a whisper.

“My daughter’s.”
