Chapter 11 - The Man Inside the Company

Mark Ellis had worked for Reeves Development for sixteen years.
Daniel had promoted him twice.
Anna disliked him.
Daniel remembered that now.
“She said Mark always knew where money moved before accounting did.”
Rebecca looked up.
“When?”
“Years ago.”
“And you ignored her?”
“I told her operations people hear things.”
Rebecca did not need to respond.
Daniel already knew.
Mark’s deleted computer was forensically imaged before he wiped it completely.
Recovery revealed messages with Margaret.
Some were ordinary.
Some were not.
MARGARET: Delay Willow audit until D. signs refinancing.
MARK: He won’t read exhibits.
Daniel stared at the sentence.
He won’t read exhibits.
A weakness had become a business process.
Another:
MARK: Anna asking questions about Park Vale.
MARGARET: Keep her away from lender files.
Then:
MARK: R.K. wants more.
Robert Kane.
Money.
Silence.
Mark had been part of it.
Not merely recently.
For years.
Margaret sat in Rebecca’s office when confronted with the messages.
“You used Mark too.”
“He handled operations.”
“He knew.”
“Yes.”
“How much did he take?”
“I don’t know.”
Rebecca traced consulting payments.
Approximately $1.3 million through a vendor called Ellis Strategic Services.
Margaret looked shocked.
“He told me those were legitimate.”
Daniel almost laughed.
“You’re offended someone stole inside your theft?”
Margaret glared.
Then something in her face collapsed.
“Yes.”
It was absurd and human.
She had built a system where accountability disappeared.
Now she felt betrayed by the people who learned from her.
The board meeting became a battlefield.
Mark presented Daniel’s signed acknowledgments.
“These demonstrate Mr. Reeves knew the family trust was engaged in related-party transactions.”
Daniel answered:
“They demonstrate I signed summaries without sufficient review.”
Mark smiled.
“Convenient distinction.”
“No. Embarrassing distinction.”
Daniel looked around the boardroom.
“I was negligent. I trusted family and executives instead of reading what I signed.”
Several directors shifted.
Daniel continued.
“But negligence is not the same as authorizing theft.”
Rebecca’s team distributed the recovered messages.
Mark’s smile vanished.
Samuel Drake read:
He won’t read exhibits.
Silence.
Mark looked at Margaret.
She did not rescue him.
Daniel realized another power reversal had arrived.
Mark had expected Margaret’s protection.
She was done giving it.
Margaret spoke.
“These messages are authentic.”
Mark stared.
“You’re under investigation.”
“Yes.”
“You’re going to believe her?”
Margaret looked directly at him.
“No one should believe me without evidence.”
Daniel almost turned toward her.
That sounded like Anna.
Mark stood.
“This entire company exists because we did what was necessary.”
Daniel replied:
“That sentence is over.”
Mark was placed on leave.
The board rescinded Daniel’s immediate termination vote.
But it did not restore him.
Samuel said:
“We need independent leadership until the investigation ends.”
Daniel nodded.
For once he did not fight.
Outside, Margaret approached him.
“You could take the company back if you wanted.”
“No.”
“That is what you always wanted.”
Daniel looked through the glass at hundreds of employees.
“I wanted Dad to think I deserved it.”
Margaret’s face changed.
“So did I.”
They stood together in silence.
Same father.
Different damage.
Then Rebecca called.
“Mrs. Parker found something.”
Helen had been reviewing older videos after investigators asked her to preserve everything.
One recording dated eleven months earlier showed Anna.
Alive.
Very thin.
Walking slowly through the garden with Lily.
Margaret approached.
They argued.
Helen had never noticed because the sound was faint.
Technicians enhanced it.
Anna said:
“If you ever punish Lily for what I told her, I will make sure Daniel sees the recording.”
Margaret replied:
“What recording?”
Anna touched her coat pocket.
“The one where you admitted everything.”
Margaret’s face on the old video went white.
Daniel turned to his mother.
“What recording?”
Margaret closed her eyes.
Robert whispered:
“Oh, God.”
Rebecca looked between them.
“Someone is going to explain.”
Margaret finally said:
“Anna recorded my confession.”
“Where is it?”
“I don’t know.”
“What did you confess?”
May you like
Margaret looked at Daniel.
“More than the ledger shows.”
