Chapter 4 - The Company Daniel Thought He Built

Daniel did not believe Robert.

Not immediately.

Reeves Development had survived a brutal liquidity crisis five years earlier after several commercial projects stalled.

Daniel remembered those months clearly.

Bank calls.

Contractors threatening liens.

His father Richard hospitalized after a stroke.

Margaret claiming she had arranged private refinancing.

The company survived.

Daniel later became CEO.

He had always believed Margaret saved it through family capital.

Rebecca went through Anna’s records.

“She may have.”

“With Lily’s money?”

“Some of it.”

“She was one.”

“Lily’s trust existed before she was born.”

Daniel frowned.

Richard Reeves had created generation-skipping trusts years earlier for future grandchildren.

After Lily’s birth, assets were formally allocated to her subtrust.

Rebecca continued.

“The Willow Ridge parcel was moved from the family trust into Lily’s subtrust when she was two. Then sold to MKR Holdings.”

“Which Margaret controlled.”

“Yes.”

“MKR sold it again?”

Rebecca scrolled.

“Six months later. $6.2 million.”

Daniel stared.

“So the trust received $1.9 million. Margaret’s shell company received more than four million in profit.”

“Yes.”

“Then what?”

“MKR loaned $3.8 million to Reeves Development.”

Daniel felt sick.

He had signed the repayment note.

He remembered now.

Margaret had said the lender was a family investment vehicle.

He had not asked who benefited.

“I signed it.”

Rebecca looked at him.

“Yes.”

“I helped steal from Lily.”

“Not knowingly based on what we have.”

“But I didn’t ask.”

“That matters differently.”

The distinction did not comfort him.

Then another line appeared.

Reeves Development repaid MKR over three years.

With interest.

Margaret had taken an asset from Lily’s trust, sold it cheaply to herself, resold it properly, loaned the stolen profit to Daniel’s company, and earned interest.

“Jesus.”

Robert sat quietly.

Rebecca turned on him.

“How many transactions?”

“Four.”

“Anna found seven.”

Robert closed his eyes.

“She found more than I knew about.”

Daniel stared.

“You were the lawyer.”

“I prepared entities.”

“You signed closing documents.”

“I relied on appraisals.”

Rebecca slid one across.

“This appraisal is forty percent below the independent bank appraisal completed two weeks later.”

Robert said nothing.

Daniel looked at Anna’s handwriting beside it.

ROBERT CANNOT CLAIM IGNORANCE AFTER 6/14 MEETING.

“What happened June fourteenth?”

Robert went pale.

“Anna confronted us.”

“Us?”

“Margaret and me.”

“Was my father alive?”

“Yes.”

Daniel felt another blow.

“My father knew?”

Robert’s silence confirmed it.

The deeper problem Anna warned about was not only Margaret.

Richard had started it.

Daniel left the archive shaking.

At home, Lily was with Helen Parker.

She sat at Helen’s kitchen table coloring.

Daniel crouched beside her.

“Hey.”

“Did you find Mommy’s box?”

“Part of it.”

“Was Grandma mad?”

Daniel glanced at Helen.

“She is angry.”

Lily whispered:

“She gets mad when I say Mommy told me things.”

“What things?”

Lily drew a square house.

“Mommy said Willow belonged to me.”

Daniel froze.

“Willow?”

“The place with the pond.”

Willow Ridge.

“Have you been there?”

Lily nodded.

“With Mommy.”

“When?”

“Before hospital.”

Daniel’s chest tightened.

Anna had taken Lily there during her last months.

“What did she tell you?”

“That Grandpa promised nobody could sell it until I was big.”

Daniel looked at Rebecca, who had just entered.

That could matter legally.

If Richard had restricted the property by trust instrument, the sale might have violated explicit terms, not merely fiduciary duties.

Helen touched Daniel’s arm.

“There’s another video you should see.”

They watched footage from six months earlier.

Margaret stood in the garden with Lily.

“Willow Ridge is gone,” Margaret said.

“No, Mommy said it’s mine.”

“Your mother filled your head with nonsense.”

“She showed me the pond.”

Margaret grabbed Lily by both shoulders.

“Listen to me. You do not own anything. Your father owns everything, and I control him.”

Daniel stopped the video.

He could not breathe.

Helen said quietly:

“That was the day I decided to keep recording.”

Rebecca asked, “Do you have originals with metadata?”

“Yes.”

“Back them up.”

Margaret had not only abused Lily.

She had been trying to rewrite what the child remembered about property worth millions.

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

Board chair Samuel Drake.

“Daniel, we need an emergency meeting.”

“Why?”

A pause.

“Your mother has informed the board that you physically assaulted her.”

Daniel looked at Rebecca.

Samuel continued.

May you like

“She is requesting your temporary suspension as CEO.”

The company his mother had secretly financed with Lily’s stolen assets was now about to become the weapon she used against him.
