Chapter 11 - Sophie’s Choice

Emily called 911 while driving.
Rachel Boone called Daniel.
Daniel did not answer.
By the time police reached his house, Vanessa was gone.
So was Daniel.
Sophie sat alone on the front porch.
The court-approved supervisor had been dismissed after Daniel claimed the visit was ending early.
Instead, he had left Sophie inside while he drove away.
Vanessa arrived nine minutes later.
“What did she do?” Emily asked.
Sophie held her mother tightly.
“She asked where Grandpa’s recorder was.”
“Did she touch you?”
“No.”
“Did she threaten you?”
Sophie hesitated.
“What did she say?”
“She said Dad could go to prison because I told lies.”
Emily closed her eyes.
“And?”
“She said if Dad went away, it would be because of me.”
Emily’s anger became so intense she could barely speak.
Officer James Porter documented everything.
Rachel filed an emergency motion that night.
This time Judge Whitaker suspended Daniel’s overnight parenting time until a full hearing.
Emily should have felt relief.
Instead she watched Sophie sit at Robert’s old desk drawing Max beneath a rain cloud.
“Mom?”
“Yes?”
“Can Dad really go to prison?”
Emily sat beside her.
“I don’t know.”
“Because of me?”
“No.”
She chose every word carefully.
“Adults are responsible for what adults do.”
Sophie stared at the page.
“What if I had given Vanessa the key?”
Emily’s heart hurt.
“The key didn’t cause any of this.”
“She got mad because I hid it.”
“Why did you hide it?”
Sophie looked toward the dog bowl.
“Grandpa told me once that if somebody wanted something so much they scared me, I should give it to you first.”
Emily blinked.
“When did he tell you that?”
“When he was sick.”
Robert had prepared even Sophie in the only way he could without frightening her.
Emily whispered, “You did exactly right.”
The next morning Daniel finally called.
Emily answered with Rachel on the line.
“You violated the order.”
Daniel sounded exhausted.
“I made a mistake.”
“You left Sophie alone and Vanessa came.”
“I didn’t know she would.”
“She knew about the recorder.”
Silence.
“Daniel?”
“You’re poisoning Sophie against me.”
Emily almost shouted.
Rachel touched her arm.
Emily breathed.
“You told Vanessa about evidence in a criminal investigation.”
“No.”
“Then how did she know?”
“I don’t control her.”
“You’ve controlled everybody else.”
Daniel’s voice dropped.
“Do you want to know why I left yesterday?”
Emily waited.
“Westbridge is pulling out.”
For a second she didn’t understand.
“Good.”
“No. Not good.”
“Why would I care?”
“Because DCP owes them money.”
Mara, listening from across the table, leaned forward.
Daniel continued.
“They advanced funds based on the Ashwood acquisition.”
“How much?”
“Enough.”
“Your problem.”
“It becomes your problem if they sue and every document comes out.”
Emily laughed.
“That is exactly what I want.”
“You think so.”
His voice became softer.
“Ask your mother where some of Robert’s medical money came from.”
Emily stiffened.
“She told me.”
“Did she tell you everything?”
“What does that mean?”
“Ask her.”
He hung up.
Carol came to Ashwood that afternoon.
Emily placed the phone on the table.
“Everything.”
Carol looked exhausted.
“What did Daniel mean?”
Tears filled her eyes.
“Robert’s treatment trial.”
“What about it?”
“It wasn’t covered.”
“How much?”
“Almost two hundred thousand.”
Emily knew Daniel had paid seventy-eight thousand.
That wasn’t enough.
Carol whispered, “Westbridge paid the rest.”
Emily felt the room tilt.
“Why?”
“Daniel arranged it.”
“Dad knew?”
“No.”
“What did Daniel get?”
Carol shook her head.
“He said nothing.”
Emily stared at her mother.
“Daniel never does anything for nothing.”
Carol opened her purse and removed an old envelope.
“I found this after Robert died.”
Inside was a letter from Daniel.
Not signed.
Printed on DCP Holdings letterhead.
It promised Westbridge “exclusive acquisition assistance regarding the Weller property” in exchange for an advance of $500,000, part of which would be used for “family medical obligations.”
Emily read it twice.
Daniel had financed Robert’s cancer treatment with money from the company trying to take Robert’s farm.
Carol began crying.
“He saved your father’s life for six months.”
“No.”
Emily’s voice shook.
“He bought leverage while Dad was dying.”
Mara studied the letter.
“This ties Westbridge directly to DCP before the mortgage default.”
Emily looked at the date.
Three years earlier.
One month before the forged mortgage.
Every piece was connecting.
Then Mara turned the page over.
A handwritten note appeared on the back.
Robert’s handwriting.
Carol finally told me. Daniel thinks gratitude will silence me. He is wrong.
Below it:
Ask who owns Westbridge Parcel 6.
Ben pulled county records.
Parcel 6 was a narrow twelve-acre tract touching Ashwood’s southern boundary.
Owner:
Vale Family Holdings LLC.
Vanessa’s mother.
Vanessa had not merely helped Daniel steal Ashwood.
Her family already owned the land that would become vastly more valuable once Ashwood provided industrial access.
For the first time, Emily understood Vanessa’s motive.
This was not a woman protecting her husband.
Vanessa had been building her own fortune.

And Daniel might not even realize how much of the conspiracy belonged to her.
