Chapter 17 - The County Hearing

The county administration building was full before the hearing began.
Farmers.
Reporters.
Westbridge attorneys.
Heartland representatives.
Emily sat beside Mara.
Daniel sat three rows behind them with his criminal attorney.
Vanessa was absent under counsel’s advice.
Mason Pike sat at the front table.
He looked completely calm.
That frightened Emily.
The hearing concerned a proposed industrial access corridor.
Westbridge presented first.
Their engineer described jobs.
Tax revenue.
Infrastructure.
Mason described Westbridge as a “responsible regional partner.”
Then an attorney mentioned Ashwood.
He described the farm as “distressed collateral presently subject to foreclosure.”
Emily felt anger rise.
Mara touched her arm.
Wait.
Mason continued.
“Westbridge has attempted good-faith negotiation with the owner, but title uncertainty makes direct agreement impossible.”
Emily whispered, “He’s using the fraud he created as the reason to ignore me.”
“That’s exactly what he’s doing.”
Public comment began.
Ben spoke first.
He described drainage, road access and Robert Weller’s refusal to sell.
Then Mara called Emily.
This was not a trial, but county officials allowed her to present documents relevant to the proposed route.
Emily stood at the podium.
“My farm is distressed because people connected to this project placed a mortgage on it using a signature I did not make.”
Murmurs filled the room.
Westbridge objected.
The board chair allowed Emily to continue.
She showed the signed side agreement recovered from Robert’s tobacco box.
Mason’s calm disappeared.
His attorney stood.
“We dispute authenticity.”
Then Daniel rose.
Every camera turned.
His lawyer whispered to him.
Daniel walked to the microphone.
“My name is Daniel Carter. I signed that agreement.”
The room erupted.
Mason stood.
“This is outrageous.”
Daniel continued.
“Mason Pike agreed Westbridge would pay my company nine hundred thousand dollars after Ashwood Farm was acquired through foreclosure below three million.”
Mason’s attorney demanded the hearing stop.
The board chair refused.
Daniel looked toward Emily.
He looked older than he had one month earlier.
“I also participated in obtaining the mortgage that created the default.”
Emily stopped breathing.
His attorney closed his eyes.
Daniel continued anyway.
“My former wife did not sign it.”
Reporters moved closer.
Mason shouted, “He is a criminal trying to reduce his own exposure!”
Daniel looked at him.
“Yes.”
The room went silent.
“I am.”
It was the first time Daniel had said it without qualification.
He described Vanessa signing Emily’s name.
Seth Palmer notarizing the false signature.
Funds flowing to Vesper Consulting and DCP.
The purchase of Parcel 6.
Westbridge advancing money.
Mason accelerating default once the county vote approached.
Mason interrupted repeatedly.
Then Mara produced the recording from Robert.
Daniel’s own voice filled the chamber.
By the time Emily understands what the farm is worth, the decision won’t be hers.
Emily watched Mason.
Not Daniel.
Mason leaned toward his attorney and whispered rapidly.
Detective Kim stood near the back doors with two state investigators.
Heartland’s general counsel looked ill.
Then something unexpected happened.
Elaine Foster asked to speak.
She approached the board.
“Heartland Community Bank is suspending all foreclosure activity regarding Ashwood Farm effective immediately.”
Emily stared.
Elaine continued.
“Our internal investigation has identified serious irregularities in origination, notarization and document retention.”
Mara whispered, “They’re abandoning Daniel.”
Heartland had finally decided the mortgage was more dangerous than the loss.
Elaine added, “The bank will consent to an order staying enforcement while the validity of the instruments is adjudicated.”
Mason’s entire strategy was collapsing in public.
Then the rear doors opened.
Vanessa entered with her lawyer.
Emily’s stomach tightened.
Vanessa walked directly toward the microphone.
“My name is Vanessa Vale Carter.”
Daniel turned.
She did not look at him.
“I signed Emily Carter’s name.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Vanessa’s lawyer looked miserable.
She continued.
“I also directed funds from Vesper Consulting to Vale Family Holdings to purchase Parcel 6.”
Mason stood.
“This proceeding has become a circus.”
Vanessa looked at him.
“You told me if I delivered the Weller farm, Tyler would never worry about money.”
Mason’s face hardened.
Vanessa smiled without humor.
“You shouldn’t make promises in text messages.”
She handed her lawyer a phone.
Printed messages were distributed.
Mason Pike had written:
Once foreclosure clears, Daniel gets his fee. You control Parcel 6. Everybody wins.
Another:
If Robert’s copies surface, retrieve them before Emily sees them.
And the worst:
The child is irrelevant. Get the box.
Emily stopped breathing.
Vanessa had shown Mason Sophie found evidence.
Mason had responded as though her daughter were an obstacle.
Detective Kim moved forward.
The board chair recessed the hearing.
State investigators surrounded Mason.

He was not immediately arrested.
