Chapter 13 - The Wife Who Betrayed Everyone

Vanessa filed for divorce from Daniel on Monday.
By Tuesday, Daniel’s assets were frozen under a temporary restraining order requested in their marital case.
By Wednesday, Vanessa’s attorney sent Westbridge a notice asserting sole rights to several acquisition agreements Daniel claimed belonged to DCP Holdings.
Emily watched the marriage collapse from a distance.
She felt no satisfaction.
People like Daniel and Vanessa became more dangerous when cornered.
The battery case against Vanessa was still pending.
Her lawyer offered the prosecutor a misdemeanor plea.
The prosecutor refused after seeing evidence that Vanessa’s actions had been connected to an attempt to recover documents.
The matter was no longer simply an angry stepmother losing control.
Investigators were examining possible witness intimidation and conspiracy.
Then Vanessa called Emily.
“Meet me.”
“No.”
“I can prove Daniel forged the loan.”
“We already can.”
“Not like this.”
Emily hesitated.
Mara shook her head vigorously.
Vanessa continued.
“I have the tobacco box.”
Emily’s pulse quickened.
“What was inside?”
“Meet me.”
“Bring it to the sheriff.”
“Then I walk away with nothing.”
“There it is.”
Vanessa laughed.
“You think morality pays lawyers?”
Emily almost hung up.
Then Vanessa said, “Daniel has a second mortgage ready.”
Emily stopped.
“What?”
“He was going to refinance Ashwood before foreclosure.”
“He can’t.”
“He can if a bank employee certifies your signature.”
Mara leaned closer.
Emily put the call on speaker.
“Who?”
Vanessa went quiet.
Then: “Elaine Foster.”
Heartland’s general counsel.
Mara’s expression changed.
Vanessa said, “Your bank lawyer isn’t protecting you. She’s protecting Heartland.”
Emily had suspected that much.
But another fraudulent loan was different.
“What do you want?”
“Immunity.”
“I can’t give you immunity.”
“You can tell the prosecutor I cooperated.”
“You assaulted my daughter.”
Silence.
When Vanessa spoke again, her voice was colder.
“I didn’t call to apologize.”
“Then we have nothing to discuss.”
Vanessa’s control cracked.
“You think Sophie was the only child Daniel used?”
Emily frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“Ask him about my son.”
Emily knew Vanessa had a sixteen-year-old son, Tyler, from a previous relationship.
She had met him twice.
“He promised Tyler’s college account was fully funded.”
“And?”
“It’s gone.”
“What happened?”
“DCP.”
Daniel had taken from Vanessa too.
Emily almost laughed at the symmetry.
Vanessa heard it.
“Don’t.”
“You helped him steal from me.”
“I know.”
“You forged my signature.”
No response.
“Did you?”
Vanessa finally whispered, “Yes.”
Mara immediately wrote something down.
Emily’s heart pounded.
“You just admitted it.”
“I know.”
“Why?”
“Because Daniel told me the loan would be repaid before you ever knew.”
“And you believed him?”
“I wanted to.”
“That isn’t the same thing.”
Vanessa’s breath trembled.
“No.”
Emily thought of Sophie screaming.
“Why did you hit the fence with Max’s bowl?”
“I needed the box.”
“Why scare her?”
“She wouldn’t tell me where she found it.”
“She’s eight.”
“I know how old she is.”
“Then explain the ditch.”
Vanessa was silent long enough that Emily thought the call had disconnected.
“I was angry.”
“That’s it?”
“No.”
“What else?”
Vanessa’s voice dropped.
“I hated that she looked at me the way you do.”
Emily stared at the phone.
“What way?”
“Like I was temporary.”
There it was.
Not money.
Not Daniel.
Something smaller and uglier.
Vanessa had spent years believing Emily’s inherited home, Emily’s child, Emily’s history with Daniel and Robert’s contempt all made her an outsider.
She had answered humiliation with control.
Vanessa continued.
“Daniel used to tell me you never needed anyone. He said that was why he left you.”
Emily almost corrected her.
Then stopped.
Daniel had told each woman whatever made betrayal feel justified.
“Where is the tobacco box?”
“I’ll trade it.”
“For what?”
“You persuade the prosecutor I’m cooperating and testify in my divorce that Daniel controlled the financial scheme.”
“I won’t lie.”
“You don’t have to.”
“What’s in the box?”
Vanessa said, “The original Westbridge letter.”
Emily glanced at Mara.
“The one promising Daniel five hundred thousand?”
“No.”
Vanessa’s voice became almost triumphant.
“The one promising him nine hundred thousand after foreclosure.”
Emily’s breath caught.
That was the payoff.
Motive.
Conspiracy.
Profit.
Vanessa continued.
“And it’s signed by Mason Pike, Westbridge’s executive vice president.”
Mara wrote: Need original.
Emily said, “Give it to investigators.”
“Help me first.”
“No.”
“You need it.”
“Yes.”
“But you won’t bargain?”
“Not with Sophie.”
Vanessa’s voice sharpened.
“You always had the luxury of principles.”
Emily replied, “No. I finally learned what they cost.”
She hung up.
An hour later, Detective Kim called.
Vanessa had not surrendered the box.
Worse, she had disappeared from her attorney’s office after the prosecutor requested an interview.
That evening Daniel arrived at Ashwood.
He looked furious.
“Where is she?”
Emily stayed behind the locked door.
“I don’t know.”
“She called you.”
“Yes.”
“What does she have?”
“Ask her.”
Daniel slammed his palm against the door.
“SHE TOOK EVERYTHING!”
Sophie cried out from upstairs.
Emily’s restraint vanished.
“Get away from my house.”
Daniel stepped backward.
He heard Sophie.
Shame crossed his face.
Then fear.
“Emily, if Vanessa gives Westbridge that letter, they’ll destroy me.”
“You destroyed yourself.”
“No.”
He looked toward the dark fields.
“If they go down, they’ll come after everyone.”
“Let them.”
“You don’t understand Mason Pike.”
Emily opened the door just enough to look at him clearly.
“Then help investigators understand him.”
Daniel stared.
“You want me to cooperate.”
“I want you to tell the truth.”
He shook his head.
“You still think truth protects people.”
Emily thought of Robert.
“No.”
She closed the door.
“I think lies eventually demand payment.”
That night someone poured gasoline across Ashwood’s equipment shed.
Ben smelled it before anyone struck a match.
No fire started.
But painted across the shed door in black letters were four words:
May you like
SELL BEFORE YOU LOSE EVERYTHING.
