Chapter 11 - The Ghost in the Network

The Aurelia had two communication systems.

The normal satellite network used by guests and crew.

And a hardened emergency communications server designed to preserve navigation, safety, and executive-security traffic for ninety days.

Rebecca had deleted browser history from her laptop.

She had cleared the guest network logs.

She had not known that certain encrypted traffic passing through the yacht’s executive VLAN was mirrored automatically to the emergency server.

Nathan had paid an absurd amount for the system.

For once, paranoia had been useful.

Federal investigators imaged the server under warrant.

The logs showed Rebecca made secure video calls to three endpoints during private lessons.

Daniel Rhodes.

Charlotte’s foundation office.

And a Mariner Crown Capital server in New York.

Investigators recovered fragments.

Audio first.

Marcus Vale’s voice.

Nathan recognized it immediately.

Smooth.

Measured.

The voice of a man who had negotiated against him twice and lost twice.

“Rebecca, stop improvising.”

Rebecca answered, “Mia won’t cooperate.”

“You don’t need cooperation. You need pattern.”

“What does that mean?”

“Document distress.”

“She’s a normal kid.”

“Then create pressure and document the response.”

Nathan’s hands went cold.

Grace whispered, “He told her to frighten Mia.”

The conversation continued.

Rebecca said, “Charlotte said not to hurt her.”

Marcus answered:

“Then don’t leave marks.”

Nathan stood so suddenly the chair rolled backward.

Detective Chen watched him.

“Sit.”

He did.

Because Mia needed him to learn how.

Another recovered fragment showed Charlotte arguing with Marcus.

“This was supposed to be about Nathan.”

“It is.”

“You’re using Mia.”

“So are you.”

“I never agreed to hurting her.”

“You agreed to removing Nathan.”

“Through evidence.”

Marcus laughed.

“Evidence is whatever survives scrutiny.”

Charlotte went quiet.

Grace looked at Nathan.

There it was.

Charlotte had not ordered every act.

But she knew enough.

Participated enough.

And kept going.

The final recovered fragment involved the company.

Rhodes said:

“Once Nathan’s voting authority is frozen, Atlantic becomes cautious. Edwin follows Charlotte. We get the merger to fifty-eight.”

Marcus answered:

“And the Olivia problem?”

Rebecca said, “I found the notebook.”

“Destroy it.”

“Charlotte told me not to.”

Marcus’s voice hardened.

“Charlotte’s debt belongs to me. She doesn’t give instructions.”

Nathan looked at Edwin.

His father’s face had gone white.

Marcus continued:

“There’s another copy somewhere aboard. Olivia said as much before she died.”

Nathan stopped the recording.

“Marcus spoke to Olivia?”

Chen nodded.

“Apparently.”

“Find when.”

Investigators searched Olivia’s phone archives.

They found a call.

Eight weeks before her death.

Twenty-seven minutes.

No audio.

Then Maya found something in Olivia’s blue notebook.

M.V. threatened N’s future if I expose procurement. Says C will cooperate because she has no choice.

Nathan read it twice.

Marcus had threatened him before Olivia died.

She had kept it from him.

Maybe because she knew what he would do.

Confront.

Explode.

Give Marcus exactly what he wanted.

Nathan hated how predictable he had been.

That afternoon, Rebecca was arrested after leaving her attorney’s office.

The news spread instantly.

Charges related to child abuse, conspiracy, witness manipulation, unlawful access to computer systems, and attempted evidence tampering were announced.

Rebecca pleaded not guilty.

Her lawyer called her “a scapegoat for a wealthy family war.”

Nathan did not respond publicly.

Then Charlotte appeared at his townhouse.

Alone.

He almost refused to let her in.

Mia was with Grace upstairs.

Charlotte stood in the entryway.

“You got Rebecca arrested.”

“Rebecca got Rebecca arrested.”

Charlotte looked exhausted.

“No makeup. No cameras. What do you want?”

“I want to talk.”

“To me?”

“To my brother.”

Nathan laughed once.

“You remembered I’m your brother?”

Charlotte flinched.

“Marcus lied to me.”

“You lied to all of us.”

“I thought I could control the situation.”

“You hired Rebecca.”

“I connected her to Mia.”

“She abused her.”

“I didn’t order that.”

“You heard enough to know.”

Charlotte looked away.

Nathan stepped closer.

“Why didn’t you stop?”

“Because by then Marcus had everything.”

“What?”

“My debt. Rhodes’s transfers. Foundation payments.”

“Your crimes.”

Her eyes flashed.

“Yes.”

Nathan stopped.

The admission mattered.

Charlotte continued.

“I approved vendor contracts that I knew were inflated.”

“How much did you take?”

“I didn’t take all of it.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

“Twelve million.”

Nathan stared.

“Why?”

“Harbor Crown.”

“You stole twelve million dollars from our company to cover your investment.”

“I intended to replace it.”

“Everybody who steals says that.”

Charlotte’s eyes filled.

“I was drowning.”

“And you grabbed Mia.”

“No.”

“You used her trust.”

“I needed you out temporarily.”

“Temporarily?”

“Long enough to close Mariner.”

“And then what?”

“I would have repaid everything from the transaction.”

Nathan almost smiled at the insanity.

“You would sell a four-billion-dollar company below value to repay money you stole from it.”

“When you say it like that—”

“How else should I say it?”

Charlotte covered her face.

For several seconds, she cried.

Nathan did not comfort her.

Finally she whispered:

“Marcus has something Rebecca doesn’t know about.”

“What?”

“A recording of Olivia.”

Nathan froze.

“What recording?”

“Her last meeting with him.”

“Where?”

“Marcus keeps insurance on everyone.”

“Where, Charlotte?”

She looked up.

“He stored copies offline.”

“Where?”

“I don’t know.”

Nathan turned away.

Then Charlotte said:

“But Rebecca knows.”

“She’s in jail.”

“She hid something on Aurelia before police arrested her.”

Nathan faced her.

“What?”

“A drive.”

“Where?”

“She told me she would use it if Marcus abandoned her.”

“Why tell you?”

“Because she called me yesterday.”

Nathan felt cold.

“From where?”

“Before her arrest.”

“What did she say?”

May you like

Charlotte repeated the words:

“If Marcus turns me into the villain, tell Nathan his wife left him one last witness.”
