Chapter 14 - Olivia’s Offer

The letter was not for Nathan.

That mattered.

Olivia had written directly to Charlotte.

Charlotte,

If you are reading this, it means one of two things: either I found the courage to give it to you, or you finally found the courage to look.

Nathan stopped reading.

Grace sat opposite him in Olivia’s writing room.

Maya stood beside the piano.

“Keep going.”

Olivia’s letter described the fraud.

Not accusatorily.

Clinically.

She knew Charlotte had authorized at least seven inflated vendor contracts.

She knew Marcus controlled Harbor Crown debt.

She knew Daniel Rhodes was routing payments.

Then Olivia offered a way out.

I have spoken confidentially with outside counsel. If you self-report before the next transfer, cooperate fully, restore funds, and resign from any conflicted board role, there may still be a path that does not destroy you.

Nathan swallowed.

Olivia had tried to save Charlotte.

Not from consequences.

From becoming worse.

The final paragraphs were personal.

You spent your whole life believing Edwin loved Nathan more because he chose him to run the company.

I cannot fix what your father did to both of you.

But Nathan did not steal your childhood from you.

Mia certainly did not.

Do not make her pay for a competition that began before she was born.

Grace wiped her eyes.

Nathan continued.

If you ever feel trapped by Marcus, come to me. If I am gone, go to Grace. She will not protect your money. That is why you can trust her.

Nathan lowered the page.

Maya whispered, “Charlotte never saw it.”

“Rebecca was looking for it.”

“Marcus knew Olivia left something.”

Nathan looked toward the envelope.

“If Charlotte had found this a year ago…”

Grace interrupted.

“Don’t.”

He looked at her.

“Don’t turn Olivia into a magic answer that would have fixed everyone.”

Nathan frowned.

“She gave Charlotte a way out.”

“And Charlotte had ways out without a letter.”

Grace was right.

Again.

They gave the original to investigators and retained a forensic copy.

Detective Chen asked whether Nathan wanted Charlotte informed.

He said yes.

Not personally.

Through counsel.

Charlotte received Olivia’s letter at 4:12 p.m.

At 5:06, she called Grace.

Grace put the phone on speaker with Chen listening.

Charlotte was crying.

“She knew.”

Grace answered softly.

“Yes.”

“She knew everything.”

“Most of it.”

“Why didn’t she give me this?”

“She was dying.”

“I would have listened.”

Grace did not answer.

Charlotte heard the silence.

“You don’t believe me.”

“I don’t know.”

“I hated her.”

Grace closed her eyes.

“No. You hated what she saw.”

Charlotte cried harder.

“I thought she was turning Nathan against me.”

“She was trying to keep Mia safe.”

“She always looked at me like she knew.”

“She probably did.”

A long silence.

Then Charlotte whispered:

“Marcus is going to destroy Rebecca.”

Nathan looked at Chen.

Grace asked, “What do you mean?”

“He’ll say she designed everything.”

“Didn’t she?”

“Some.”

“What did Marcus do?”

“He selected her.”

Grace frowned.

“Selected?”

“Rebecca had worked for his family. He knew how she treated children.”

Nathan’s stomach turned.

“What does that mean?”

Charlotte heard him.

“Nathan?”

He stepped toward the phone.

“What did Marcus know?”

Charlotte went quiet.

“Answer me.”

“Rebecca had complaints before.”

Grace whispered, “What complaints?”

“A family in London accused her of harsh discipline.”

“Physical?”

“Yes.”

Nathan felt rage returning.

Chen lifted one finger.

Control.

Nathan breathed.

Charlotte continued.

“Marcus made the complaint disappear because Rebecca had copied financial documents from that family too.”

Maya stared.

“So she had done this before.”

“Yes.”

“Why hire her?”

Charlotte’s voice broke.

“Because Marcus said she understood how to get children to say what adults needed.”

Nathan closed his eyes.

Charlotte had known Rebecca was dangerous.

Maybe not every detail.

Enough.

“Did you know she had hit other children?”

“I knew there were allegations.”

“And you put her beside Mia.”

“I thought I could control her.”

Nathan whispered:

“You thought wrong.”

Charlotte sobbed.

“I know.”

For the first time, it sounded real.

Then she said:

“I’m going to cooperate.”

Nathan looked at Chen.

Charlotte continued.

“Fully.”

“Why now?”

“Olivia was right.”

“That’s not enough.”

“No.”

Charlotte inhaled shakily.

“I’m tired.”

Nathan had heard desperate people say they were tired before.

Often they meant they wanted consequences to stop.

He asked:

“Are you willing to lose Harbor Crown?”

“Yes.”

“Your board seat?”

“Yes.”

“Your shares if restitution requires it?”

Silence.

Then:

“Yes.”

“Prison?”

Charlotte began crying again.

“Yes.”

Nathan looked at Grace.

Power had reversed completely.

A week earlier, Charlotte controlled the board narrative.

Now she was preparing to testify against the man who owned her debt.

But Marcus moved faster.

Before Charlotte could complete her first formal proffer session, Mariner Crown released a dossier to journalists.

Bank records.

Emails.

Private Whitmore messages.

And one devastating allegation:

Nathan had supposedly instructed Daniel Rhodes to create one of the fraudulent vendor structures three years earlier.

An email appeared to show Nathan writing:

USE WHATEVER ENTITY DANIEL THINKS WILL KEEP THIS OFF THE MAIN BOOKS.

Nathan stared at the screen.

Maya said, “Did you write that?”

He remembered the project.

A confidential yacht-security research program.

They had used a separate subsidiary for competitive reasons.

“Yes.”

Maya’s face tightened.

“Context?”

“Legitimate R&D.”

“But those words are yours.”

“Yes.”

Marcus had mixed genuine emails with fraudulent transactions.

Now federal investigators asked Nathan to sit for an interview.

Whitmore Marine’s board expanded his leave.

Atlantic Fiduciary extended his suspension.

And Grace received notice that because Nathan himself might be implicated in the financial fraud, restoring his authority could take months.

The conspiracy had been exposed.

Yet Nathan was still sinking with it.
