Chapter 17 - The Backup

Marcus ordered Gavin Cole to lock the cabin door.

Cole hesitated.

Nathan noticed.

“Don’t,” Nathan said.

Marcus turned.

“Excuse me?”

Nathan looked at Cole.

“You’re the contractor. Not family. Not board. Not Mariner.”

Cole swallowed.

Marcus said, “Lock it.”

Nathan continued.

“He goes to prison. You go to prison. Charlotte cooperates. Rebecca cooperates. Rhodes cooperates.”

Cole’s hand remained on the door.

Marcus’s voice hardened.

“Gavin.”

Nathan asked:

“How much is he paying you?”

Cole looked at Marcus.

There.

A crack.

Marcus stepped toward him.

“Do your job.”

Cole locked the door.

But his confidence was gone.

Marcus placed the archival array on the desk.

“Both of you.”

Charlotte stood beside Nathan.

The biometric console lit.

Nathan understood the system.

His thumbprint.

Charlotte’s authorization code.

The array decrypted.

Marcus would inspect the files.

Then likely destroy the physical device.

Police needed the evidence preserved.

Nathan touched the transmitter through his shirt.

Still there.

Marcus noticed.

“Take it out.”

Nathan froze.

Marcus smiled.

“I’m not Rebecca.”

Nathan removed the transmitter.

Placed it on the desk.

Marcus crushed it beneath his shoe.

Charlotte whispered, “Now what?”

Nathan looked at the restored security camera.

Still dark.

Then at Mia’s tablet docking station.

Empty.

And suddenly remembered.

Aurelia’s cameras had local battery backup.

The status light could be disabled without stopping recording.

Rebecca had taught Mia that.

She believed the camera was off.

But the camera’s local memory sometimes continued.

Nathan did not know whether this one did.

He needed time.

He placed his thumb on the reader.

“Charlotte.”

She entered her code.

The array opened.

Thousands of files appeared.

Procurement backups.

Emails.

Video.

Marcus leaned forward.

“Search MV.”

Charlotte looked at Nathan.

He typed.

M.V.

Hundreds of results.

Marcus’s eyes widened.

Then one folder:

OLIVIA_PRIVATE.

“Open it.”

Nathan did.

Inside was an audio file.

Olivia and Daniel Rhodes.

Rhodes sounded nervous.

“Marcus controls the vendors.”

Olivia asked, “Charlotte knows?”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

“At least forty million already.”

“Why are you telling me?”

“Because Marcus will leave us holding everything if regulators find it.”

Nathan looked at Marcus.

His face had gone white.

The audio continued.

Olivia:

“Then testify.”

Rhodes:

“I have children.”

Olivia:

“So does Nathan.”

Rhodes:

“Marcus knows things.”

Olivia:

“He knows what you let him use.”

Nathan stopped the file.

Marcus said, “Delete it.”

Nathan looked at him.

“No.”

Marcus stepped closer.

“Delete the folder.”

“No.”

Cole moved behind Nathan.

Charlotte said, “Gavin, think.”

Marcus snapped.

“Shut up.”

Charlotte laughed.

“You’re losing control.”

Marcus grabbed her wrist.

Nathan’s body reacted.

He moved.

Then stopped.

His promise.

He did not strike Marcus.

Instead, he pulled Charlotte free and stepped between them.

Marcus looked almost disappointed.

“You really have changed.”

Nathan said, “Not for you.”

Sirens sounded faintly outside.

Marcus looked toward the porthole.

Cole panicked.

“You said they wouldn’t come.”

Marcus turned on him.

“Shut the server.”

Nathan moved first.

He hit the system’s emergency lock command.

The array began automatically replicating decrypted data to Aurelia’s internal secure mirror.

Marcus lunged for the power cable.

Charlotte blocked him.

He shoved her.

She fell onto the bed.

Nathan grabbed Marcus’s forearm.

They struggled.

Not punches.

Control.

Marcus tried to reach the cable.

Nathan held him back.

Cole opened the cabin door.

Agents shouted from the corridor.

“FEDERAL AGENTS! HANDS!”

Marcus froze.

Cole immediately raised both hands.

Charlotte remained on the floor.

Nathan released Marcus.

Marcus stared at him.

“You think this ends with me?”

Nathan stepped backward.

“No.”

Agents entered.

“It ends with evidence.”

Marcus was handcuffed.

Cole surrendered.

Charlotte sat upright.

An agent approached her.

“Charlotte Whitmore?”

“Yes.”

“We need you to come with us.”

She held out her hands before he asked.

Nathan looked at her.

Charlotte’s eyes filled.

“I’m sorry.”

He did not say he forgave her.

He said:

“Tell them everything.”

She nodded.

As agents removed everyone, Nathan walked toward the cabin security camera.

The status light suddenly came back on.

Green.

A technician entered.

“Interesting.”

“What?”

“The local recording cache stayed active after the status LED was disabled.”

Nathan looked at him.

“Did it record tonight?”

“We’ll verify.”

Two hours later, they had the answer.

Yes.

Every word.

Marcus threatening Nathan with surveillance of Mia.

Marcus ordering the archive unlocked.

Marcus telling Charlotte he would destroy evidence.

Marcus instructing Cole.

The same dark camera Rebecca once believed protected her now preserved the conspiracy’s final collapse.

But the most important discovery came from the decrypted backup.

A spreadsheet showed every dollar.

$61.4 million diverted.

$12.2 million benefiting Charlotte.

$8.9 million benefiting Rhodes.

$4.1 million paid through entities connected to Rebecca and related operations.

The remainder flowed to Mariner-controlled companies, consultants, and concealed fees.

Maya looked at Nathan.

“Marcus didn’t just finance the fraud.”

“What?”

“He profited from it.”

“How much?”

“Twenty-seven million.”

Nathan stared.

The man who had posed as Charlotte’s rescuer had helped create the debt that trapped her.

Marcus had not found desperation.

He had engineered it.
