Chapter 17 - The Ledger

Rachel closed the study door.

Martin smiled.

“You came back.”

Her face gave him nothing.

“I survived here.”

“Because I allowed Victor to keep you alive.”

Adrian stepped forward.

“Say that again.”

Martin lifted the gun.

“Don’t.”

Adrian stopped.

The brown ledger lay six feet away.

Rachel placed a document box on the desk.

“The trust original.”

Martin’s eyes flicked toward it.

“Open it.”

Rachel did.

Inside lay an expertly aged reproduction prepared under police supervision.

Martin did not touch it.

“You first.”

Rachel nodded toward the ledger.

Martin smiled.

“Still negotiating.”

“You taught me.”

That annoyed him.

He opened the ledger.

Handwritten entries filled every page.

Charles’s notes appeared beside transactions.

Hale payment.

Political bribes.

Victor theft settlements.

Adrian’s bailout money.

Then Laura.

Adrian read the entry upside down.

HALE — 40K — L. ACCIDENT. REMOVE SECOND VEHICLE.

His face tightened.

Martin turned pages.

“Your father documented sins like business expenses.”

“Why keep this?”

“Insurance.”

“Against Charles?”

“Against everyone.”

Rachel asked, “Show me the entry before I disappeared.”

Martin reached near the end.

A payment dated three days before Rachel’s abduction.

$250,000.

BROCK SERVICES.

AUTHORIZED: ESTATE CONTINGENCY — M.S.

Rachel stared.

“You paid Brock.”

“I preserved an arrangement Charles created.”

“You ordered my kidnapping.”

“No.”

“You paid the people who helped Victor hold me.”

“After Victor had already taken you.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“For what?”

“To prevent chaos.”

Rachel laughed softly.

“You really believe those words mean something.”

“They mean four thousand employees did not wake up unemployed because you wanted moral purity.”

“You left me chained in a room.”

“I never touched the chain.”

Silence.

Rachel looked at him almost with pity.

“That’s your whole defense, isn’t it?”

Martin’s face hardened.

Adrian said, “What happened to my father?”

Martin’s hand tightened on the gun.

“Charles killed himself slowly for forty years.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

“He was going to expose Ravenhill.”

“Yes.”

“He was going to confess about Laura.”

“Yes.”

“He planned to destroy all of us and call it redemption.”

Adrian stepped closer.

“So you poisoned him.”

Martin aimed at his chest.

“I told you not to move.”

Rachel watched Martin’s breathing.

Fast.

He was losing control.

“Did you put propranolol in his medication?”

Martin looked at her.

“You already know what Victor claims.”

“I want to hear what you claim.”

“I claim Charles had a weak heart.”

Adrian said, “And you made it weaker.”

Martin’s eyes flashed.

“He took the pills himself.”

The room went silent.

Rachel asked, “What pills?”

Martin realized too late.

He had gone beyond the known public evidence.

Adrian stared.

Martin recovered quickly.

“He took medication every day.”

“But you said pills.”

Rachel stepped slightly sideways.

“You knew the propranolol was given as pills.”

“Rachel.”

“You mixed them with his evening medication.”

“No.”

“You called Sophie to ask about interactions.”

“Stop.”

“You waited six minutes.”

“Stop.”

“You watched him collapse.”

“Shut up!”

The gun swung toward her.

Adrian moved instinctively.

Martin fired.

The bullet tore into the bookshelf beside Adrian’s shoulder.

Outside, Brooks shouted through the transmitter channel.

“Move!”

Martin grabbed Rachel.

The gun pressed beneath her jaw.

“No police!”

Rachel went rigid.

Adrian raised his hands.

“Let her go.”

“You brought them.”

“Yes.”

Martin dragged Rachel toward the study’s hidden service door.

The same passage system connected to the kitchen shaft.

Rachel’s face changed.

Not fear.

Recognition.

“No.”

Martin pulled her.

“No!”

She drove her heel into his foot.

He struck her.

Adrian lunged.

Martin fired again.

The bullet hit Adrian high in the left arm.

He fell.

Rachel screamed.

Martin dragged her into the passage and slammed the hidden panel.

Brooks’s team entered seconds later.

Adrian clutched his bleeding arm.

“Rachel!”

Brooks knelt beside him.

“Stay down.”

“He took her into the shaft.”

Adrian pulled Noah’s small wrench from his pocket.

The brass service mechanism had locked automatically.

He jammed the wrench beneath the latch.

Exactly as Noah had.

The door opened.

Adrian looked at Brooks.

May you like

“He showed me how.”

Then he entered the darkness after his wife.
