Chapter 12 - The Missing Security Chief

Daniel Cho’s car remained in the employee garage.
His wallet was in his office.
His phone had last connected to the resort network at 8:14 p.m.
At 8:17, a service corridor camera went offline.
At 8:23, Lucas’s former driver entered the same underground level.
His name was Paul Serrano.
Police located Paul’s truck twenty miles away.
Empty.
The investigation changed again.
Now there was a potentially endangered witness.
Ethan wanted to search personally.
Morales stopped him.
“You are not law enforcement.”
“He works for me.”
“That does not turn you into a detective.”
“He may have evidence about Rebecca.”
“And if Lucas is responsible, you become another target.”
Ethan hated being powerless.
Mia changed that.
She found him pacing.
“Dad.”
“What?”
“You’re doing the thing.”
“What thing?”
“The angry walking.”
He stopped.
“When you do it, everybody gets scared to talk.”
He stared at her.
That observation hurt more than criticism from a board.
He sat down.
“Better?”
“A little.”
Claire joined them.
They created a temporary routine.
School.
Therapy.
Dinner.
Police updates only after Mia went to bed.
Normality became an act of resistance.
Twenty hours after Daniel vanished, police found him.
Alive.
He had been locked inside a vacant commercial warehouse owned by an LLC tied to Lucas.
Daniel had bruises, dehydration, and a fractured wrist.
He told investigators Paul Serrano abducted him.
“Who ordered it?” Morales asked.
“Paul said Lucas.”
Daniel had hidden the original footage six years earlier because he noticed Lucas editing security archives after Rebecca disappeared.
“Why didn’t you report it?”
“I did.”
“To whom?”
“Victor Hale.”
Ethan closed his eyes.
Again.
Every warning flowed into the same compromised people.
“Victor told me the edits were authorized for guest privacy.”
“You believed him?”
“I was twenty-four and terrified of losing my job.”
“What changed?”
“Rebecca’s case reopened. I checked my old files.”
“You kept a copy?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
Daniel looked at Ethan.
“In Charles Whitmore’s old mountain lodge.”
Ethan frowned.
“Why there?”
“Your father had an offline server used for corporate backups. Nobody remembered it after he died.”
The lodge sat outside Lake Arrowhead.
Police secured it.
Inside a locked equipment closet, technicians found the server.
It still worked.
The full footage from the night Rebecca disappeared had survived.
Not only the hallway.
Service corridors.
Parking garage.
Loading dock.
Rebecca entered the bridal suite at 11:40.
At 12:06, Victor disabled the hallway camera.
At 12:31, Lucas and Victor moved Rebecca through the service corridor.
She was walking.
Barely.
Her hands appeared restrained in front of her.
Margaret followed carrying Mia.
Ethan gasped.
There was his thirteen-month-old daughter.
Asleep in her grandmother’s arms.
At 12:37, they entered the underground garage.
Rebecca turned suddenly toward a camera.
Her face was visible.
Blood near her temple.
Then she looked directly at Lucas.
Even without audio, her hatred was unmistakable.
Lucas pushed her into the Range Rover.
Victor climbed into the passenger seat.
Margaret got into a separate car with Mia.
Lucas drove away.
The footage continued.
At 4:58 a.m., Margaret returned alone with Mia.
At 6:44, Victor came back.
At 7:03, Lucas returned.
Alone.
His shirt was different.
He entered a maintenance room.
At 7:11, he emerged carrying a black trash bag.
Daniel froze the frame.
“What’s that?”
Ethan stared.
The bag appeared heavy.
Lucas drove off again.
Police traced the maintenance room.
Behind shelving they found an old floor drain.
Forensic luminol testing revealed extensive cleaned blood.
Rebecca’s.
Ethan’s knees weakened.
Morales said quietly, “Something happened after he returned.”
But Rebecca may not have been there.
The blood could have come from clothing or objects.
Then technicians recovered an audio backup from the parking garage.
At 7:02, Lucas exited his Range Rover.
He was talking on the phone.
Only one side was recorded.
“Victor, I said get rid of the dress.”
A pause.
“No, Mother cannot know.”
Another pause.
“She thinks Rebecca ran.”
Ethan stared.
Margaret had been telling the truth about one thing.
Lucas and Victor deceived her about what happened after Northstar.
The recording continued.
“Once the trust transfer is done, none of this matters.”
Then Lucas said:
“Rebecca should have signed when she had the chance.”
The call ended.
Ethan looked at Morales.
“You have enough now.”
“We have kidnapping. Financial motive. Cover-up. Strong evidence.”
“For murder?”
“Not yet.”
Ethan slammed his hand against the table.
“What will be enough?”
Morales looked directly at him.
“Finding Rebecca.”
Silence.
Then Daniel spoke.
“There’s another camera.”
Everyone turned.
“At the boathouse.”
Ethan stared.
“You said the old network was gone.”
“It was.”
“Then what camera?”
“Charles installed a wildlife camera facing the dock because people kept trespassing.”
“Would it still exist?”
Daniel swallowed.
“The recordings uploaded to the mountain server.”
They searched.
A folder appeared.
GARRICK COVE — OCTOBER 17
The first clip showed Victor’s sedan.
Then Lucas’s Range Rover.
At 6:21 a.m., both men stood on the dock.
They carried something wrapped in white fabric.
Claire covered her mouth.
Mia was not present.
Margaret was not present.
The men lowered the bundle into a small motorboat.
At 6:34, the boat left the cove.
The final camera frame showed the white fabric shifting.

A hand emerged.
Rebecca was still alive.
