Chapter 17 - The Bridal Suite Again

Ethan kept his eyes on Keane.
“What do you want?”
“Northstar.”
“You can’t own land by stealing paper.”
“I need the originals destroyed before Merrick’s fraud lawyers see them.”
“They already have copies.”
Keane’s face changed.
Ethan had guessed.
It worked.
“You’re lying.”
“Maybe.”
“Give me the deed.”
“Mia first.”
Keane pressed the gun closer to the chair.
Mia flinched.
Ethan’s anger surged.
He controlled it.
Behind the walls, Morales’s tactical team listened through his transmitter.
Keane said, “Your brother ruined me.”
“You helped him.”
“I represented him.”
“You guaranteed his debt.”
Keane’s eyes narrowed.
“You’ve been investigating.”
“The numbers are simple.”
“Nothing about your family is simple.”
“That does not make you innocent.”
Keane laughed.
“You think innocence exists in this company?”
Ethan thought of Charles’s confession.
Rebecca’s diary.
Claire’s lie.
Margaret’s choices.
His own blindness.
“No.”
Keane seemed surprised.
Ethan continued.
“But guilt has degrees.”
He needed Keane talking.
He needed Mia calm.
“You helped Lucas after Rebecca disappeared?”
Keane said nothing.
“You knew about Northstar.”
“I knew enough.”
“Did you know Lucas killed Rebecca?”
Mia’s face tightened.
Keane glanced at her.
Ethan immediately regretted the question.
He changed direction.
“You sent the diary pages?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To weaken you before the shareholder vote.”
“You abducted Daniel?”
“No. Serrano did.”
“For Lucas?”
“Yes.”
“You kidnapped Mia tonight without Lucas’s knowledge?”
Keane smiled.
“Lucas always underestimated how expensive his loyalty became.”
So Keane acted independently.
Financial desperation.
Not family revenge.
The final surviving conspiracy had cannibalized itself.
Mia slowly moved her left hand toward the bracelet.
Keane noticed.
“Hands still.”
She froze.
Ethan said, “She’s seven.”
“She’s smarter than everyone in this family.”
That was true.
Keane looked at Ethan.
“Your originals.”
Ethan pushed the folder forward with his shoe.
Keane forced Mia to stand.
“Pick it up.”
Mia bent down.
Ethan saw the bracelet clasp hanging open.
Inside it was a tiny black object.
A memory card?
No.
A wireless tracker from Daniel’s security kit.
Mia must have taken it during the chaos.
Keane had unknowingly carried a live location beacon upstairs.
That explained how Morales knew their precise position.
Ethan did not react.
Mia picked up the folder.
Keane grabbed it.
He opened the deed.
His face changed.
“These are copies.”
“Yes.”
“You lied.”
“Yes.”
Keane aimed the gun directly at Ethan.
Mia screamed, “No!”
Police moved.
The suite doors exploded inward.
“DROP THE WEAPON!”
Keane spun toward the sound.
Mia dropped to the floor exactly as she had been taught during security drills.
Ethan moved behind the fireplace wall.
Keane fired once.
The bullet struck plaster.
Officers fired no shots.
A tactical deputy tackled Keane from the side as another officer controlled his weapon arm.
Seconds later he was on the floor.
Handcuffed.
Mia sobbed.
Ethan crawled toward her.
“Are you hurt?”
“No.”
He pulled her against him.
Claire appeared only after officers cleared the room.
Mia ran into her arms.
“You came!”
“Of course I came.”
Ethan saw the bracelet.
“You put the tracker in there?”
Mia nodded.
“Daniel said trackers help lost people.”
Daniel, standing at the door with his injured wrist still braced, looked stunned.
“I meant luggage.”
Mia said, “I was kind of luggage.”
Claire laughed through tears.
Ethan did too.
Morales approached.
“You ignored one instruction.”
“What?”
“You told him the police had copies.”
“I said maybe.”
“That was still improvisation.”
“Sorry.”
She almost smiled.
Then she looked toward the hearth.
“We found something while securing the room.”
The original fireplace had never been fully removed during renovations.
A loose stone shifted during the tactical entry.
Behind it was a narrow cavity.
Inside was an old phone wrapped in plastic.
Rebecca’s.
Not the phone Victor used to manufacture messages.
A second device.
A private phone nobody knew she owned.
Forensic technicians powered it carefully.
The last recorded video began at 11:36 p.m. six years earlier.
Rebecca appeared on-screen.
“If I am wrong, I will feel ridiculous tomorrow.”
She smiled sadly.
“If I am right, someone needs to know why I went upstairs.”
She explained Lucas.
Northstar.
Margaret.
Victor.
Then she said:
“I am leaving this phone here because I think Lucas will search me.”
The video continued.
“If Ethan finds it, I hope he understands something.”
A pause.
“I did not stop loving him.”
Ethan broke.
“I stopped trusting him to choose me over the version of his family he needed to believe.”
Claire touched his shoulder.
Rebecca continued.
“But people can change after consequences. I just wish he did not need consequences this large.”
Then Rebecca looked toward the bridal-suite door.
Someone knocked.
Her expression changed.
Before hiding the phone, she said one last thing.
“If Mia ever sees this, tell her the bracelet is hers. The three stars are for her, Ethan, and me. Not because families stay perfect.”
Rebecca’s eyes filled.
“Because even when one person disappears from the room, what was true before can still be true.”
The video ended.
Mia touched the three engraved stars.
Ethan closed his eyes.
Rebecca had been speaking from the same room where Mia had just survived another attempt to silence the truth.
But this time the camera had not stopped.

This time the child came out safely.
And this time everyone was watching.
