Chapter 14 - The Man Who Stayed Loyal to Lucas

Paul Serrano disappeared.

Police searched his apartment.

Empty.

His bank account had been drained.

His truck had already been recovered after Daniel’s kidnapping.

He possessed cash.

False identification.

And six years of loyalty to Lucas.

Morales issued a statewide alert.

Ethan hired private security for Mia but agreed to coordinate with police.

He refused to turn her life into imprisonment.

School continued with protection.

Therapy continued.

Claire called Mia every evening.

Ethan rarely joined.

Then one night Claire asked to speak with him.

“I remembered something.”

“What?”

“The day after Rebecca disappeared, Paul gave me an envelope.”

Ethan stiffened.

“Why are you remembering now?”

“Because I didn’t understand it then.”

“What envelope?”

“Cash.”

“How much?”

“Ten thousand dollars.”

Ethan stared.

“You took money?”

“No. I gave it to hotel security.”

“Daniel?”

“No. His supervisor.”

“Name?”

“Owen Marks.”

Owen died four years earlier.

“What happened to the cash?”

“I never saw it again.”

“Did you tell police?”

“Yes.”

“Harland?”

“Yes.”

Another suppressed clue.

Claire continued.

“Paul told me Rebecca wanted me to have it.”

“Why would he say that?”

“I think he was testing whether Rebecca had told me something.”

Ethan understood.

Paul wanted Claire frightened or compromised.

The cash could later be framed as payment.

“What did you tell him?”

“That Rebecca would never send money through him.”

“Then?”

“He smiled and said, ‘You don’t know her as well as you think.’”

Claire’s voice shook.

“I should have understood.”

“You were already scared.”

“That cannot be my excuse forever.”

Ethan was quiet.

“No.”

They were learning the same lesson separately.

Fear explained choices.

It did not erase consequences.

Naomi uncovered payments to Paul.

More than $600,000 over six years through a security subcontractor controlled by Lucas.

Paul had been rewarded for silence.

Then another payment appeared.

Two hundred thousand dollars.

Three weeks after Rebecca disappeared.

Memo:

Calder remediation.

Ethan stared.

“What does that mean?”

Naomi did not know.

Morales searched Calder Key again.

Ground radar detected disturbed soil near the old boathouse.

Excavation revealed burned clothing.

A metal zipper.

Fragments of ivory fabric.

Claire identified the pattern from Rebecca’s gala dress.

Victor and Lucas had destroyed her clothing.

But no remains.

Then a small glass vial was found.

Prescription sedative.

Issued to Victor.

Prosecutors now had evidence of abduction, restraint, sedation, concealment, and prolonged detention.

Still, Rebecca’s final fate remained uncertain.

Lucas exploited that.

From jail, through attorneys, he maintained Rebecca escaped Calder Key alive.

He claimed Paul transported her voluntarily after she agreed to leave.

“She wanted a new life,” his lawyer told reporters.

Ethan nearly threw the television.

Instead he turned it off.

Mia watched him.

“Did Uncle Lucas lie again?”

“Yes.”

“How do you know?”

Ethan paused.

“We have evidence he lied about other things.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

He smiled sadly.

“No.”

He thought.

“I believe he’s lying because Mom left messages showing she wanted to come home.”

Mia nodded.

“That’s better.”

“What?”

“You said believe. Not know.”

His seven-year-old daughter was teaching him evidentiary discipline.

Late that evening someone entered the resort grounds.

Security detected movement near the old bridal suite.

Ethan was staying there temporarily because the family villa was surrounded by press.

Guards responded.

The intruder escaped.

But left a package outside the suite.

Inside was Rebecca’s missing handbag.

The same handbag Lucas and Victor carried in the old footage.

Ethan did not touch it.

Police processed it.

Inside were Rebecca’s wallet.

Lipstick.

Keys.

A photograph of infant Mia.

And a small digital recorder.

Morales played it after forensic preservation.

Rebecca’s voice filled the room.

Weak.

Breathing hard.

“If this gets to Claire… don’t give it to Ethan unless he’s ready to hear me.”

Ethan shut his eyes.

Again.

Rebecca’s caution.

Again.

Her understanding of him.

The recording continued.

“Lucas took Mia. Margaret helped. Victor is moving money. Paul is doing whatever Lucas pays him to do.”

A pause.

“If I disappear, Northstar is only part of it.”

Rebecca coughed.

“Lucas has another company. He calls it Harbor Seven. It owns something offshore. He thinks Ethan will never check because Ethan trusts family numbers.”

Naomi looked up.

“Harbor Seven?”

She began typing.

A Delaware LLC existed.

Harbor Seven Ventures.

Owner hidden behind a trust.

Its assets included a private marina company.

And a thirty-eight-foot motor yacht purchased five years and eleven months earlier.

Three weeks after Rebecca disappeared.

The seller?

Victor Hale.

Current registered owner?

Paul Serrano.

Morales stared.

“Find that boat.”

The Coast Guard located it the next morning in a marina near Ensenada, Mexico.

International coordination delayed access.

But records showed Paul had entered Mexico two days earlier.

He was probably with the vessel.

Then Mexican authorities detained him as he attempted to leave the marina.

Inside the yacht, investigators found a locked safe.

Paul refused to provide the combination.

A warrant permitted entry.

Inside were cash.

Passports.

A handgun.

A stack of old photographs.

And a sealed plastic bag containing Rebecca’s wedding ring.

Ethan stared at the image.

He had bought that ring fourteen years earlier.

Rebecca never took it off.

Paul had kept it.

Not as evidence.

As leverage.

Or a trophy.

Then Morales called again.

“There’s something engraved inside the ring.”

Ethan already knew.

His wedding date.

“No.”

“Something added later.”

A second inscription had been scratched beside the original.

Three numbers.

37-14-9

“What does that mean?”

Nobody knew.

But Naomi looked at the Harbor Seven records.

The yacht had thirty-seven numbered storage compartments.

Compartment fourteen had been permanently sealed during a refit.

And the refit invoice was dated nine days after Rebecca disappeared.
