Chapter 12 - The Secret Daniel Brought Into Their Marriage

Claire stepped away from the hospital bed.

“How long?”

Daniel looked ashamed.

“I knew she had worked for my family.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

“I knew she had signed questionable transactions.”

“How long?”

“Before we married.”

The answer struck more painfully than Margaret’s slap.

“You let me stand in front of everyone and marry you while you knew my mother might have helped steal from your father?”

“I didn’t know the extent.”

“You knew enough to hide it.”

“Yes.”

Claire folded her arms tightly.

“Why?”

“Because I loved you.”

She laughed bitterly.

“Apparently that sentence excuses everything in our families.”

“No. It explains my mistake.”

Daniel tried to stand.

Claire stopped him.

“You were kidnapped. Stay in bed.”

“I need you to understand.”

“No, Daniel. You need to understand.”

Her voice broke.

“I have spent days discovering that everyone around me decided what truth I was strong enough to survive.”

He looked down.

“That includes you.”

“Yes.”

Silence settled between them.

Daniel finally said, “My father told me years before he died that there were problems with company accounts. After his death, I found nothing. Margaret told me he had been confused because of stress.”

“And my mother?”

“I found an old staff list while we were engaged. Evelyn’s name was there.”

“You asked her?”

“Yes.”

Claire froze.

“My mother lied to you too?”

“She admitted processing payments but said she didn’t understand them.”

“And you believed her?”

“I wanted to.”

“Because you loved me.”

“Yes.”

Claire looked toward the window.

“That’s not love. That’s fear wearing good clothes.”

Daniel absorbed it.

He did not argue.

Detective Ortiz entered later with federal investigators specializing in financial crimes.

Owen’s cooperation had widened the case.

Margaret had not been at the Connecticut house when police arrived.

She had fled less than an hour earlier.

A warrant was being sought for her arrest.

Martin Pike was under investigation for forged documents and financial concealment.

The Whitmore board had placed Margaret on administrative leave.

For the first time, her power was cracking.

Yet she still had allies.

That afternoon Whitmore Holdings’ stock lenders and banking partners reacted to the scandal.

A major credit facility was temporarily suspended.

The board demanded Daniel return immediately.

Claire stared at the message.

“He can barely walk.”

Daniel said, “If I don’t appear, Margaret’s directors will argue the company has no legitimate leadership.”

“You were held against your will for days.”

“And the company employs four thousand people.”

“That is exactly how this family keeps sacrificing human beings to institutions.”

Daniel looked at her.

“You’re right.”

It surprised her.

He continued.

“But if Margaret collapses the company while trying to save herself, innocent people lose jobs.”

Claire hated that he was also right.

The next morning Daniel appeared remotely before the board from the hospital.

He described his confinement.

Two directors who had voted for Margaret looked horrified.

Harold Finch asked, “Are you accusing your mother of kidnapping you?”

Daniel answered carefully.

“I am stating under advice of counsel that I was prevented from leaving properties controlled by entities associated with her and transported by Owen Cross against my will.”

Margaret joined the meeting through her attorney.

Her voice entered without video.

“This is an outrageous distortion.”

Claire felt Daniel stiffen.

Margaret continued.

“Daniel was unstable after discovering his wife’s family involvement in Jonathan’s death. I arranged private care.”

Daniel said, “You locked me in a quarry building.”

“You were a danger to yourself.”

“Then why did you fabricate emails?”

Silence.

The board voted unanimously to remove Margaret as interim executive chair pending investigation.

Daniel’s authority was restored.

A power reversal.

But victory lasted less than an hour.

Naomi entered the hospital room carrying a new court filing.

Margaret had petitioned the New York Supreme Court for a temporary injunction challenging Daniel’s twenty-six-million-dollar transfer.

Attached was an affidavit from Dr. Peter Halden claiming Daniel suffered a psychotic episode when he authorized it.

Daniel stared.

“I have never been his patient.”

“Then we prove it,” Claire said.

Naomi’s expression remained grim.

“There’s more.”

She handed Claire another page.

Evelyn Mercer had signed an affidavit.

It stated that Daniel had become “obsessed and irrational” after questioning her about Jonathan’s death.

Claire went cold.

“My mother signed this?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Yesterday.”

Claire looked toward the door.

Evelyn had disappeared that morning.

May you like

And now Claire understood why.

Margaret still had leverage over her.
